Apparently, I am the seventh most powerful person in jazz.
...or so says the latest Jazztimes Magazine annual Power Index.

:wow:

You may all address me as "Your Highness" from now on.

1. Perhaps "Your Jazzness" would be more appropriate.

3. Well, yer' highness...
(which is a strangely appropriate honorarium for a jazzbo...), if you are so powerful and whatnot, the question I have is:

Why?

And do you know how Bob Bonis is doing? ;-)

8. I'm not a musician, sadly.
I only play in the comfort of my own basement.
No, I am the jazz buyer for one of those big book and music chains. I guess that makes me powerful in the world of jazz.

I just heard from someone that I might be sitting at a table with JONI MITCHELL tomorrow at the big jazz conference in Long Beach. HOLY FUCK!!!!!!

20. So, who are some of your favorite "new" and "old" jazz artists?
As a programmer for a community radio station in Kansas City and former director of the KC Blues & Jazz Festival, I have met dozens of jazz and blues greats. Most are some of the nicest folks in the world. My favorite KC jazz artist? Jay McShann.

23. Well...
I've been a huge jazz fan since I was about 13. I was lucky enough to meet many of my faves while they were still living: Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Miles Davis, and sooooo many more.

I have a lot of current, living favorites. A couple of weeks ago I saw Benny Golson and Jon Hendricks together at a club here in Ann Arbor. That was a highlight for me. Jason Moran is a very strong young talent, as is Stefon Harris.

24. Thanks for the list. I am always looking for new talents to
listen to! A couple of folks from the Midwest you might want to check out:

Karin Allyson
Angela Hagenbach
David Basse

I have met some of your list, including Benny, Dizzy and Miles. I have become close friends with Miles' long time bass player, Felton Crews from Chicago.

I'm nobody, really. As soon as I actually see the issue everyone keeps calling me about, I will post what they said about me. All I know is that Wynton Marsalis is #1 and I am #7.

10. The important question: who is less powerful than you?
What big names did you beat out?

11. As soon as I see the list, I will post it.
I have a feeling it will be mostly industry types - the heads of labels, the people who run the big jazz festivals, etc. I think that last year or the year before, Herbie Hancock was right below me on the list.

Too bad it doesn't really mean anything to the people I work for.

Very cool. Congrats!

And since I have you in the house at the moment, maybe your Highness could tell me where in the H*ll I could pick up a copy of Lennie Niehaus', "I Remember Stan".

I've been looking for almost twenty years and cannot for the life of me, find a recording of it :(
