Obligatory music thread: Classic albums that have fallen off the radar? |
|
Every trite critic namechecks Revolver and Pet Sounds, but how many of you have heard Gene Clark's "No Other" album? Or Terry Reid's "River"?
How about The Prisoners "In From The Cold" or The Flamin Groovies "Teenage Head"?
Tell me about albums you love that most people have forgotten about.

2. Um, that one's kind of obvious |
|
That one's on pretty much every trite "best albums" list. I've had it for years. I want some stuff I might not have heard of.

San Francisco's answer to Syd Barrett, kinda.
And while we're on the subject of acid casualties, Julian Cope's Peggy Suicide is still a '90s masterpiece.

4. Any Mothers of Invention Album |
|
To me Absolutely Free, Uncle Meat and We're Only in it for the Money should be discussed with the likes of Sgt Peppers, Exile on Main St, etc etc. I knew it was a bad sign when Rolling Stone put Blind Melon on the cover in the issue they memorialized Frank. Still he seems to be alive and well on this forum based on the names and avators. Scott

6. Mason Proffit, Wanted: Mason Proffit |
|
Edited on Sun Sep-28-03 09:22 PM by lunabush
1968 and Mason Proffit was an early early venture into Country Rock, ala Gram Parsons and the Byrds. The song Two Hang Men is one of the best anti-death penalty songs ever.
As I rode into Tombstone on my horse, his name was Mack, I saw what I'll relate to you going on behind my back. It seems the folks were up in arms, a man now had to die For believing things that didn't fit the laws they'd set aside.
The man's name was Ima Freak, the best that I could see He was the executioner, a hangman just like me. I guess that he'd seen loopholes from working with his rope He'd hung the wrong man many times so now he'd turned to hope.
He talked to all the people from his scaffold in the square He told them of the things he'd found but they didn't seem to care He said the laws were obsolete, a change they should demand But the people only walked away, he couldn't understand.
The Marshal's name was Uncle Sam, he said he'd right this wrong He'd make the hangman shut his mouth if it took him all day long. He finally arrested Freak, and then he sent for me To hang a fellow hangman from a fellow hangman's tree.
It didn't take them long to try him in their court of law He was guilty then of thinking, a crime much worse than all, They sentenced him to die so his seed of thought can't spread And infect the little children, that's what the law had said.
So the hanging day came 'round, and he walked up to the noose I pulled the lever but before he fell I cut him loose They called it all conspiracy and that I had to die So to close our mouths and kill our minds, they hung us side by side.
And now we're two hangmen, hanging from a tree, That don't bother me at all. Two hangmen hanging from a tree, That don't bother me at all.

Look Sharp! Joe Jackson.
Of course, why it's not on said lists is open for discussion, but it was an impact record when I was younger.

At least two of their albums influenced the Beatles and the Beach Boys -- Insight Out and Birthday. They also did a blatantly LSD/Tibetan Buddhism themed song, Pandora's Golden Heebie-Jeebies, which they snuck onto one album by relating it to an infamous bust of an LA music venue.
Most of their stuff was quite a bit more psychedelic than the big prom hits they had. Tim Leary, in particular, was fond of them.

Fantastic English jazz-infused rock band from the early 70s. Way ahead of their time.

For an old metal head, every song on it rocks. Get the cd and turn it up LOUD, and you'll see what I mean. Not for the faint of heart...
