2. Yeah!!! It was almost a perfect game |
|
USC was what the 49ers were 10 years ago. It was weird to watch... their dominance, but I loved every minute of it, even though I'm a UCLA alum!

7. USC was obviously the best this year, but face it, Utah or Auburn would |
|
have given them a better game. Is it FINALLY time to get rid of the BCS and go to a play-off system? Hell, it's been time for years now, but that doesn't mean anything.
Congrats USC people--you were obviously the best. Now if we can somehow keep OU out of these games where they don't belong!

10. Definitely need a playoff system |
|
Just try explaining that to the local rose bowl/orange bowl/sugar bowl/cotton bowl/whatnot bowl...commissioners. Money talks. USC has happened to overcome the BCS prejudices -- being winners three years in a row. But most of the matchings have to do with how the team's fans travel and how much they spend. Money!

15. Ditto - USC is the bomb |
|
I knew when I watched the USC-Notre Dame game earlier this season that the Trojans could outplay most NFL teams with little extra effort.
Congratulations, USC fans - what an incredible and breathtaking night, and a great coach and team to cheer for!
USC should have been in tonight's bowl game by anyone's standards. But they deserved a better opponent. Had it not been for Bowling Green's defection from the 2004 Auburn football schedule (and subsequent addition to the Oklahoma schedule this year), the Tigers would have been there to at least give the Trojans more of a run for their money tonight.
Frustrating.

16. Leinart and all of USC were VERY impressive-poor #23 for OU |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 08:59 AM by underpants
They picked on him all game and he had a HORRIBLE game. As you watch the highlights see how many times you see #23 in white near the play but not making it.
The 35 yeard run by Bush-#23 was there but ran past the hole (left side)
The TE's spectacular catch (GREAT throw by Leinart too)-#23 was "covering"
The BOMB to #9-#23 failed to cover. That was in interesting sequence-OU's #44 went down with a bad left shoulder and they called timeout (official timeout) coming back from commercial USC converted on 3rd down and #24 knocked #9 out of bounds #24 looked to be holding his right shoulder but OU didn't call time. #24 half assed the blitz and #23 was no where near #9 TD!!!
The throw under the uprights-#23 was "covering" that too.
Great game by USC. The BONEHEADED play on the punt and Jason White's :wtf: throw didn't help (did he yell "punt" before he threw it?)
Congrats USC you were MAHVELOUS!!!!

Yeah, I did see a couple close-ups of some worried Sooner faces after awhile too. Thanks for the congrats!
RE the 2nd picture: USC was doing too much celebrating after awhile -- they did need to tone it down. But so was Oklahoma after that opening drive -- they were celebrating as if they had won the game already! That quickly stopped! It's better to leave the celebrating to the fans.

19. ESPN's lack of perspective |
|
I don't know how, hours after a game ends, anyone can say it was one of the best ever. ESPN also claimed a few months ago that Brett Favre's games-started streak was the best streak in the history of sports, even ahead of Cal Ripken's and Joe Dimaggio's achievements. They have a tendency to proclaim whatever just happened as the best thing ever.
USC deserves to be congratulated, and I suppose there's always room for overstating things.

20. That's true this was a great performance but not a great game |
|
The best I have seen was the '99 Div.II Northwest Missouri State 58-52 win over Carson NEwman in 4 OT's (I think)Championship game. I only watched it because my best friend's father played at CN a long time ago.
THAT was a great game.

21. ESPN was overstating Oklahoma BEFORE the game |
|
so was everyone else, except a handful of pundits who saw better. That's why it's so sweet to hear them pour it on. Even on their home page, for awhile they had:
No. 2 Oklahoma vs. No. 1 USC
USC was listed 2nd, even though none of the others were that way -- the higher ranked team was listed first, as it should be. One ESPN jerkoff right before the game was saying he would have liked Oklahoma and Auburn in the title game, so it is definitely nice to see them squirm.

22. Yeah, ESPN has much for which to atone |
|
I don't know if it was Kirkie or Trevie, but one of them was talking about Oklahoma's "dominating" defense that shut out Texas and held Oregon to seven points as the decisive factor for the game. The way he was bloviating, he made it sound like USC would be lucky to get past the 50-yard line.
I'm getting just a smidgen tired of the "professional" sports writers and broadcasters who can't be bothered with any teams that play later than the Central time zone. Apparently, any game that doesn't end by Saturday at 7 p.m. Eastern Time is totally ignored by the sports mavens who need to, I don't know, get to bed early or get some serious work done on their Sunday morning hangover.
And these guys get paid a lot of money to be this wrong.

It was annoying me so much, I had to channel-surf for awhile. Even during the game, there were a couple of comments that Oklahoma was "giving" the game away, instead of comments that USC was "winning" because they were flat-out the better team. Of course, it became obvious (impressively obvious) and then they reluctantly started on USC's virtues.
And to think: last year Oklahoma was GIFTED their No. 1 spot by the BCS after their horrible loss to Kansas when they didn't even win their division! They choked playing LSU and were completely CRUSHED by USC. You are so right -- how could they have been so wrong, TWO years in a row! With Mike Williams in last year for USC, USC would have more than stomped Oklahoma. But it should have been USC and LSU last year, NOT Oklahoma.

When one team wins by that much, it's not very exciting.
