Two-Hour Snow Delay - WOO-HOO!!!! |
|
:bounce:
I live outside Pueblo, and work for a major defense contractor in Colorado Springs. On snowy days, we follow whatever delays are announced for the closest Air Force facility. For us, that is Peterson Air Force Base.
Today, Peterson is on a 2-hour delay for non-essential personnel. Fort Carson is on a 2 1/2-hour delay for non-essential personnel, and Schriever AFB is on a 3-hour delay for everybody.
This means that where I normally have to be in the office by 8:00 am, I have until 10:00 am to get there today. Since it took me nearly an hour and a half to get home last night (a 45-mile trip that usually takes around 50 minutes), I'm planning on leaving around 8:00. That should give the plows and sanders (and other vehicles) enough time to make the roads passable.

My truck has two-wheel drive, so I plan on taking it slow. It's funny - I saw several vehicles that had run off the Interstate last night - one front-drive Dodge Intrepid spinning its wheels trying to get out of the median, and several SUVs. One SUV had rolled a few times and was blocking the northbound lanes just north of Pueblo.

3. When I Grew Up in New Jersey.... |
|
...our town (Morris Township) rarely closed for snow days. The superintendent of schools lived across the street from the junior high school, at the top of a hill. He said that he used to go out at 4:00 am on snowy days and see if he could drive down and back up his street - if he could, we had school that day.
I always thought that someone in his neighborhood should have gone out there around 2:00 am with a garden hose to get the street nice and icy.....

5. it seems there are more school closings these days than when |
|
I was in school. For grammar, high school and college I never had a school closing day even though there were record snows in that period.

6. It May Be a Liability Issue |
|
Schools and companies may be liable if someone is injured trying to get in on a snowy day. Any lawyers out there care to weigh in on this??

7. When I was stationed at Carson... |
|
...my first sergeant said that a 2 hour delay only meant he couldn't initiate article 15 action against you for being 2 hours late. Since I worked directly under him I had to come in at the normal time anyway while the rest of the company came in 2 hours late.
