I just ordered a food processor, ask me anything! |
|
After days of mulling it over and researching it to death....I finally ordered a KitchenAid food processor, Model KFP650. I got the last one for $149 with free shipping. It's a discontinued model, but it's heavy duty with a metal base, made in France as opposed to the new series which is made in China. It listed for well over $200, is 11 cups with a mini-bowl. The main thing is I can knead a loaf of whole wheat bread in it. It has the standard feed tube (not a wide mouth, no extra bit for thin items), but the price was so good, I decided on getting it.
Whew! I feel like I've gone through a lot of stress debating over this. But after the one 670 disappeared overnight, I thought this one was waiting for me....

6. food processors shouldn't be used to "knead bread" |
|
it heats the dough and can make your results unpredictable. Everything else a food processor can be used for is to chop or process relatively soft foods, and doesn't require a rolls royce jet engine. I think Kitchen Aid is w-a-y overpriced for the actual use you get from a food processor. You shoulda gone to target and gotten something cheaper with all the gadgets, plus the cheapest breadmaker you can find.
Use the breadmaker on "dough" setting only for perfect dough if you don't like to knead by hand, then rise in a bowl and bake in your oven.
Oh well - sounds like you like to cook - have fun!

get one. None seemed all the predictable. And the cheap ones all have non-stick coating inside which I don't want!! I actually used my old Hamilton Beach FP to whip up a great loaf of white, but with whole wheat it bogged down and smelled like it was going to die (it did't but it came darned close) and I had to remove the dough. Anyway, it was still wonderful. The mixing part alone saves loads of time.
I use my yogurt spoon to get the yeast/water to the perfect temp. and the dough cools down to the 80's when processing which is perfect, so heating the dough is not a problem with this fast machines.
Not only did I read, I talked to someone who owns the 600 model and they raved about using it for WW bread. And I talked to Kitchen Aid several times. The machines do a fine job on one loaf, which is all I need to do at one time.

13. Make your own mayonnaise or aioli |
|
For some reason, that's about all our fancy-shmancy Cuisinart is ever used for.
No, wait. I make a mean gazpacho with it.
No, sorry. Come to think of it, I use the blender for the gazpacho.
So, the food processor makes really nice cole slaw.
No, we buy ours at the barbeque place. Sorry.
It's really good for blending baby food.
But, our babies have grown up.
Now I'm wondering why we have one at all....................

is great. I also make a tofu-pumpkin pie that is fabulous, but only with using a food processor! I also do a lot of stir frying. This one has a mini-bowl which may even be used more often than the large bowl. People seem to think the small bowl is great and turns out to be the "sleeper" in all this...

16. Congratulations on finding a bargain! |
|
And, you know why you wanted it so just enjoy it. Kitchen gadgets don't always live up to expectations but sometimes they do. I ordered my first Cuisinart about 15 years ago and used it every single day for a couple years. Now I use it for holiday dinner prep and the occasional shredding or slicing job but if the house burned down I'd still think of it as a counter necessity.
While it isn't the ideal vessel for kneading dough I often preferred it to my KitchenAid mixer because it took far less time. Okay, so once I had to send the whole darned thing back to the manufacturer because the dough formed a paste that wouldn't allow me to get the dough blade out of the machine, but one lives and learns and it never happened again. So, make some dough while its still under warranty and you still have all that pesky paperwork about where to send it for repairs.
Have fun!
