Cat Case Triggers Protest Against Abortion, Gays

About 30 protesters, who said they were motivated by reports that people in Evansville could be prosecuted for shooting a cat, gathered Tuesday outside the Civic Center for a graphic demonstration against abortion and homosexuality.

The protesters were from churches in Owensboro, Ky., and Campbellsburg, Ind. They held up large photographs of dismembered aborted fetuses, used epithets to condemn gays and got involved in some shouting matches with people walking by.

Jack Oliver, pastor of Lord of Sabaoth Baptist Church in nearby Owensboro, carried a large sign with a photograph of a dead fetus.

Oliver defended the protesters' use of epithets to describe gay people and said he believes gays "should be put to death." Asked if he meant that statement literally, Oliver said he did.

Asked what link existed between the cat-shooting allegation and homosexuality, Larry Briggs, who came with the Campbellsburg church group, said, "People who take inordinate affection over cats probably lean toward favoring homosexuality ... there's an expedient link between the two."
