1. What is a QB?
What is the NFL?

3. The overall QB rating is flawed
It severely undervalues YPPA, or Yards Per Pass Attempt.

YPPA is a terrific stat that weighs every single pass attempt and isolates basic football: how far did your team advance the ball on average every team you threw the football? If your QB is not 7.00 YPPA or higher the post season chances diminish significantly, minus a freak defense like the '02 Bucs or '00 Ravens.

I'm amazed the NFL does not highlight YPPA on its website. Pro Football Weekly.com does give the stat full focus. And Al Michaels is virtually the only network announcer who gives YPPA frequent mention, along with rushing attempts (not rushing yards).

The overall QB rating gives far too much weight to a handful of passes, i.e. TD passes and interceptions. That can be extremely misleading. A great QB who averages 9.0 YPPA during a given game but has his receivers consistently tackled short of the goal line and throws no TDs will actually receive a worse rating than a bum who averages 6.0 YPPA but manages 3 TD passes in a futile catch-up mode.

4. Because it is up to the Reciever to get the yards
it is up to the qb to get the ball their. And TD's and INT's are much more of a value then YPPA, I agree with the method that is used. What if you throw a two yard pass and the reciever manages to break a couple of tackles and goes 55 yards down the field?

7. We can "what if" this to death
For example, what if a QB throws a perfect 10 yard pass that should be a TD, but the klutz receiver bobbles it up in the air and it is intercepted? YPPA will simply list it as gaining O yards and not 10, insignificant, while the overall QB rating asserts the deadly transfer of a interception instead of a TD pass.

YPPA is an all-inclusive stat that measures every pass and, like everything else, is often influenced by team prowess. A QB who is always under a fierce rush will naturally have an inferior YPPA, and a team with great receivers who run after the catch, as per your example, may have an inflated YPPA. Notice that all the QBs atop the overall ratings currently are from the most successful teams. That is not always true of YPPA.

8. You didn't say a what-if
but you gave a what-if scenario of having a high YPA but recievers being tackled at the goal line or something like that. I don't think YPA is a good indicater of how good a QB is because it is the recievers that will improve or not improve it. But touchdowns are as much greater value because they equal 6 points. But whatever you say, the YPA is not a good indicater of how good a QB is, Int's and TD's, Passing percentage, and passing yards are.

They do take the YPA to come up with a rating.

Four categories are used as a basis for compiling a rating:
• Percentage of completions per attempt
• Average yards gained per attempt
• Percentage of touchdown passes per attempt
• Percentage of interceptions per attempt

also an example,
Average Yards Gained Per Attempt — 3,969 yards divided by 461 attempts is 8.61. Subtract three yards from yards-per-attempt (5.61) and multiply the result by 0.25. The result is 1.403.
Note: If the result is less than zero (yards per attempt less than 3.0), award zero points. If the result is greater than 2.375 (yards per attempt greater than 12.5), award 2.375 points.

6. ok
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 07:27 AM by VermontDem2004
a week ago he threw for 2 touchdowns(no INT's), completed 67% of his passes and ran for 1 TD, two weeks ago he threw for 3 td's in the first half and threw no int's in the game and completed 69% of his passes. Now where the hell did you get the idea he was stinking up the place? Start your day like the 'Snake'

10. Gus Frerrotte has played 1.5 games, and his QB rating is close to perfect.
I'm pretty sure of that.

11. It is 140 I believe
but to qualify to be ranked, you must average 14 pass attempts per game. But Culpepper is up there

12. Manning's surely shot through the roof after last night's game
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=230928018

20 of 25 314 yards 6 TD's

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4256

His ratings are as follows
@Cleveland 55.5 (yikes)
vs. Tennessee 107.8
vs.Jacksonville 90.0

And then last night

@ New Orleans 158.3 I think that is close to perfect.

13. Ironically this Saints site says 158.3 IS perfect
O'SULLIVAN "PERFECT": QB J.T. O'Sullivan reached the perfect passer rating of 158.3 for the game as he completed all three of his passes for 53 yards and a TD.

You'd think it would be a round number like 160 or something anyway here is the formula
(I hope)

15. That is his passer rating AFTER the Saints game
those 3 INT's this year is the only thing stopping him from being ahead of those ahead of him.

18. He actually had lots of good solid seasons
with the Jets and Browns, just not this year. When Parcells was the coach of the team was when he was playing his best football of his career.
