MONDAYS 'IN' THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD -- SEPTEMBER 29, 2003
MONDAYS 'IN' THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD

--------------------------------------------------------------------

HAPPY, HAPPY MONDAY everybody and Welcome to MONDAY'S 'IN' THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD . Well I'm glad you stopped in to say hello and I hope to jump-start the rest of your week.

Today we are serving Mary's Red Velvet Cake from Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook. The cake is deep red and the layers are flavored with chocolate and cream cheese frosting! Yummy!

As for our beverage, may I suggest a Ceylon blood red tea, on ice with a mint leaf garnish. Orange blood tea is a citrus-based blend of orange peels, hibiscus flowers, apple pieces, rose hip and safflower. It Makes a delicious, all natural citrus punch to compliment our cake.

DU, are you with me? Come on DU TALK TO ME !

Let's grab our red velvet cake and head down 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad. It's time, hop on board.

In Memoriam

Althea Gibson

"Who could have imagined? Who could have thought" the woman said upon presenting her Wimbledon trophies to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in 1988. "Here stands before you a Negro woman, raised in Harlem, who went on to become a tennis player ... and finally winds up being a world champion, in fact, the first black woman champion of the world."

Today we mourn the death of Althea Gibson 'IN' the Undergroundrailroad. I was very very sad to learn of her death. Her contribution was great and she inspired so many, including myself. Ms. Gibson was a role model to me. Her contribution was not only to the world of tennis but, more importantly, to the issue of Civil Rights. She overcame unbelievable odds, during a time when segregation was the law in the South, to achieve international acclaim and success. I relate very much to Althea Gibson and today I learned that my god-daughter's significant other is the great nephew of Althea Gibson. He will attend the funeral and I will report his comments in next Monday's issue.

I searched for the most appropriate article regarding her death. NEW YORK NEWSDAY's article is excellent.

Tennis Pioneer Althea Gibson Dies at 76

By Joe Gergen

September 29, 2003

Althea Gibson, who broke the color line on the Grand Slam tennis circuit and won consecutive women's singles titles at Wimbledon and at the U.S. national championships, died of respiratory failure Sunday at an East Orange, N.J. hospital. She was 76 and had been in failing health for years.

In 1950, three decades before Venus and Serena Williams were born, Gibson became the first black player to participate in the national grass court championships at Forest Hills, the precursor to the U.S. Open. Although she was defeated in the second round by Louise Brough, pushing the reigning Wimbledon champion to match point before losing, she flashed the talent and determination that would carry her to individual titles at the French championships in 1956 and at Wimbledon and Forest Hills in 1957 and 1958. After her 1957 Wimbledon victory, she was given a ticker-tape parade in Manhattan and was received at City Hall.

In an era that offered neither prize money nor lucrative endorsements, Gibson retired from amateur tennis at the top of her game at 31.

"If she had been a half-step later , she would have been a multimillionaire," said former Mayor David Dinkins, who was among Gibson's longtime friends.

SYLVIA -- QUEEN OF SOUL FOOD 'IN' THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD

HER HARLEM RESTAURANT is one of New York's most visited tourist spots in Manhattan. Any day of the week you will notice ladies in high heels, huge hats, and haughty attitudes as they prepare to enter the Lenox Avenue eatery. Sometimes, sometimes not, they are accompanied by gentlemen also splendid in double-breasted suits, shiny ties and mack daddy hats. OH, don't forget that pinky ring. OK, Daddy-O, now, we're really sayin somethin, do whada whada. Now, those going to church ladies and gentlemen rule right along side Sylvia Woods, the owner of the corporation giant, a *single* word, * SYLVIA'S*. They enter and exit the restaurant with an air of privilege, of entitlement, of family. And of course they *are* family, her "extended" family and SYLVIA'S restaurant is in their hood. That might explain when locals observe the international/national tourist taking a wrong turn, consulting with a map in hand, they might suddenly feel a tap-tap-tap on their shoulder: 'Honey, if your looking for SYLVIA'S your going the WRONG way! SYLVIA'S is right over there. Now you have a nice lunch, the food is good, real good! Sylvia's the queen of soul food you know.'

Well, swing and sway! ATTITUDE IN THE SOUL FOOD HOUSE!

The Woods’ restaurant-and-food empire to which Sylvia and her family have dedicated their lives is now worth millions. "My mom had to re-mortgage the family farm in South Carolina to lend us the $20,000 for us to buy the luncheonette in 1962. That’s how it all started," Sylvia explains. There’s the main restaurant in Harlem that opens seven days a week from 7.30am till 10.30pm. "Can you believe we sometimes serve up to 3,000 people in a single day?"; a catering business for weddings and parties that occupies the property a few doors down; and a sister restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia. And then there’s also Sylvia’s Food Products Inc, a range of 29 sauces, dressings and seasonings, from cans of ready-cooked, black-eyed peas and peach-cobbler mix to the original barbecue sauce with which her son Van Woods launched the range a decade ago. They sell into food stores and delis across the country.

Then there are the books, the cookbooks, Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook, that holds many of the family recipes such as Candy Yams Souffle, Mary's Red Velvet Cake and Frances's Lily-White Biscuits . Whatever those names mean, hold meaning to one, Sylvia Woods. As she put's it, "I do the kitchen proud". Yes you do! Perhaps my next question should be "HUNGRY PEOPLE IN THE DU HOUSE?"

Check, check, microphone check it out, Sylvia's Soul Food.com

DIABETIC SUPPORT FORUM IN THE DU MEETING ROOM

There is an important topic in our DU Meeting Room. It deals with Diabetes. Individuals with Diabetes, including myself, have to learn different ways to cope and respond to the disease. To fulfill this, I have found it helpful to become actively involved in advocating support groups for those who are affected by diabetes and need someone to talk to. DU now has a support group. BlondeAtLast is the author of the group and she has used her advocacy in showing how you can make a difference in the fight against diabetes.

What does a support group do? It is merely a forum where you have you very own space to share ideas and opinions on a variety of topics with people who are affected by Diabetes or just want to know more about prevention. You might share what you had for dinner or offer some recipes.

I need to say this is *NOT* a medical substitute. You must see your Physician if you have questions about Diabetes. This is just a forum where we discuss our feelings and provide support to each other.

Why not step in and check it check it out!. Then go here.

Also here is a link to the American Diabetes Association ADA.

Thanks blondeatlast for creating this topic in The Meeting Room.

1. Good Monday morning!!
Red Velvet cake just looks like it can't be real, but it is yummy! :9

Althea was Venus and Serena before anyone ever THOUGHT of a Venus and Serena - a true pioneer!

Soul food - good thing I'm not hungry right now...just reading that made me gain weight! :D

1. What would I do? Pay off the last of my debts, return to school full-time for a graduate degree, buy some property and travel. When I play the lottery, which is rare, I let the machine pick my numbers unless it is basketball season, in which case I use the uniform numbers of the starting line-up of the San Antonio Spurs as my lucky numbers. My lucky lotto numbers are: 4, 17 and 39. :-)

2. My chef's knife. I love it. It is comfortable and cuts anything! It was a Christmas present to myself last year.

3. My socks are a khaki color - in line with my slacks.

4. I am waiting for my mom to finish Al Franken's new book, so I can borrow it. I already know it's great though. :D

And, just for you...the golf cart. My agency's charity tournament is Saturday! Gotta practice!

20. Good Monday GOP and Thanks for *MY* Golf Cart ;-)
You right about Soul Food - DIET WARNING ALERT !

Let me tell you a story. Back in the day, before Airline travel was affordable or available (segregation) to blacks, Railroad travel was very popular (yes, that was segregated too, but that's another long story). My Father, Mother and all my siblings would travel the rails with what was called a "shoe box lunch". It was a shoe box filled with a soul good lunch. Fried Chicken Drum Sticks, a Yam, homemade biscuits (Sylvia Style) and peach-cobbler. It was unique and it was good. Oh, it WAS loaded with fat and carbs, what's a girl to do?? I ATE IT!

I really appreciate that wonderful verbal tribute you have Althea. YES! Before Venus, Serena AND Tiger, there was Althea. She lived in an era that offered neither prize money or lucrative endorsements. Honestly, it was VERY rare to see an African-American on television, let alone endorse a product. It was her talent, pride and determination that carried the day. I hate the struggle she had to confront, it hurts because I also lived in the same era, and fought the same struggle. One thing comforts me. SHE LIVED TO SEE THE DAY. She saw Serena and Venus. She had to know she made a difference.

I'm going to learn a lot more about Althea Gibson from a family member that I know. I will report it here in the Undergroundrailroad.

OK, QUESTIONS:

1. Lottery winnings: Pay debts, return to school and travel. Lucky numbers are 4, 17 and 39. :) OK, I've made a note of them.

2. Your kitchen gadget is your chef's knife!

3. COOL KID KHAKI COLOR SOCKS -- You go !

4. And waiting for Mom to finish Al Franken's new book! Now, now, we don't want to hurry Mom ;-)

I like this book:

Good luck with the golf tournament and thanks for the daily dose of cart.

Love ya,

Mina

3. Morning DU! Morning Mina!
Oy, has it been a rough few weeks around the old Sal household. Finally, though, it feels as if I'm nearing the end of this funk. I tell ya, I'll be glad when 2003 is over, as overall it sure hasn't been my year!

Anyway, it's good to see ya, Mina. I hope things are good for you and I'll send some good vibes to get Leon to call. :)

Questions of the day

1. What would you do if you won the million plus lottery ? What are your lucky numbers?
-I think #1 would be a nice house and a new car. Then college tuition for my girls. The rest would be just gravy.

2. What is your favorite kitchen gadget/appliance/utensil ? (Yes, including the George Forman Grill)
-How did you know I love my George Foreman Grill? Until I get my Rotissamat, I'm convinced it's the best kitchen invention EVER!

3. What color socks are you wearing? OR What color stockings are you wearing?
-Boring white.

4. What book are you reading? Critique?
-I just finished Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars that tell them. I highly recommend this book as it debunks some of the right's most famous arguments step by step. A good primer in debating fiction with facts.

Have a great week all!

4. am I first!?
1. What would you do if you won the million plus lottery ? What are your lucky numbers?

Well..... I'd pay off some debts and student loans for one thing. Then buy a Mazda RX8, and rent a nicer place with new furniture. Invest some money, and of course donate to the DU, DNC, SVP, and charities. My lucky numbers.... well they're the computer generated numbers I guess LOL.

2. What is your favorite kitchen gadget/appliance/utensil ? (Yes, including the George Forman Grill)

Cuisinart food processor.

3. What color socks are you wearing? OR What color stockings are you wearing?

No socks on right now, normally wear sandals even in colder weather (but never when snow's on the ground.... )

4. What book are you reading? Critique?

Lies and the lying liars who tell them. It's great so far, found only one false item in there. He says the Australian $5 bill is magenta. It isn't, it's jelly-bean pink :-)

49. you forgot the jelly-bean pink Australian $5
This older version has a little purple, but is generally jelly-bean pink:

But this newer version is totally jelly-bean pink:

I like Australian money. There is not "front" or "back," both sides seem to be the front, and there is a man and woman featured on each denomination!

5. Good Morning, Mina!
Wow! Amazingly informative thread today. I had heard of Althea Gibson, but didn't know anything about her. And I always thought it was Arthur Ashe who broke the color barrier in tennis. Shows what I know.

I didn't know you have diabetes. And good on DU for having a support group for it! That's why I love this place. I hope it provides everyone with diabetes with the information and support they need.

Great stuff about Sylvia and her soul food. I was born and raised in Texas to an Alabama-born mother, so I grew up with Southern cooking. That's what we called it, instead of soul food. Black-eyed peas, collard greens, sweet potatoes, succotash, the whole spread. There's only one restaurant in the whole area around here that cooks decent Southern. Darn!

1. I'd buy my wife some really nice stuff, and travel around the world. I don't play the lottery, so I don't have lucky numbers.

2. The coffee maker. Couldn't make it without it.

3. Not wearing any socks. Or stockings, either :-) I'm barefoot. (YES! I'm wearing clothes! You naughty thing!)

4. "An Edge In My Voice". A signed limited edition by Harlan Ellison. It's a collection of the columns he wrote for Los Angeles-area periodicals back in the early eighties. They perfectly convey his angry liberalism, his devoted activism, and his rather unconventional humanism. He's a captivating writer.

Have a great day, Mina! :hi:

29. Good Monday Aristus! (The ever regal sounding Aristus!) How are you toda
Thanks Aristus for those special comments about Althea Gibson AND Arthur Ashe. They were both very special to the world of Tennis and they are probably upstairs having a great set. A tribute to them both.

Yes, I have Diabetes and I love Sylvia's food stuff. Actually, I do use her cookbook and just adjust the ingredients (if that's really possible) but I do try my best Aristus to conform to the diet and eat small frequent meals. For example, I can eat 1/2 cup of Sylvia's Blackeyed Peas. I have a can here and according to the nutrition facts, one can holds 3 1/2 cup servings. The calories would about to 110 and total carbs 5grams. My Diabetic educator has provided a carbohydrate counting plan (yes, done on the computer just for my likes and dislikes) to include the foods I like and eat them in smaller amounts. So actually I do eat the good stuff some of the time and eat the bad stuff (like cake, ice-cream, cookies; all sugar free) some of the time also.

Now succotash was a dish my Mom prepared at least twice a week. To this day, I still LOVE IT! So, we have a lot in common Aristus, we love those Southern dishes.

Now to the questions:

Lotto winning. There is a saying in New York, "you have to be in it, to win it". Why not give it a try? You never know! I think "luck" is deserving to all good people and Aristus, your "good" people (a southern expression ;-) ).
So, if you did win, wife would have a blank check and travel would be first up.

Kitchen Gadget: THE COFFEE MAKER! Finally, I was wondering if I was the ONLY one. LOL,

Socks: Just say not to socks and boxers vs. briefs ;-)

Reading: "An Edge in My Voice" by Harlan Ellison
Excellent read and congrats on the signed copy.

Have a great rest of your week Aristus.

Love,

Mina :loveya:

6. Tea and cake!
Sounds like a Bill Cosby breakfast. :)

Good Monday morning, UGRR.

It seems there have been a lot of obituaries lately. Sad. I love tennis and Althea was one of the tennis goddesses to me. RIP.

I've never tried soul food. Looks like that cookbook is worth checking out.

On to the answers to your questions.

1. I'd build a new house. Nothing fancy but something closer to the coast. (I'm about 2 hours away now.) I'd also make sure my mother and mother-in-law can live out their days in comfort and not have to worry about money.

2. My favorite kitchen device is the telephone with which I make reservations. ;) But seriously, I do love my George grill.

3. No socks yet. But my favorite are Red Sox. Tee Hee

4. I'm reading Hillary's book. I'm enjoying it very much. She and I had a pretty similar upbringing - except the GOP part of her youth.

Have a super Monday! :)

31. Tea and cake! Here's to the ladies who lunch! :-)
Good Monday MaineDem! How are you today?

Ladies and Gentlemen, MaineDem is the Undergroundrailroad's Offical Fitness Guru!

Yes, yes. Sadly we have seen more and more obituaries. So *MANY* great people who contributed so much to our world, one of a kind folks are now gone. Even the loss of Elia Kazan yesterday was unexpected . In spite of the political controversy that surrounded him, his triumphs such as the Broadway production of "Death of A Salesman" and "A Streetcar Name Desire" can't be forgotten. I think it started with Nina Simone for me. A world without Nina? A world without Barry White, Gregory Hines, Edwin Starr, and Althea Gibson? It makes one think about death and dying. It's in your face when you keep hearing names one right after the other who are now gone.

So after our moment of silence, on to the questions!

1. Lottery Winnings: New home, built from the ground. Close to the coast (that sounds very nice). Both Mom's would have all the creature comforts as well.

2. Kitchen Gadget: The ever needed telephone AND the George Foreman Grill (of course, your our fitness consultant!)

3. Socks? Yes, The RED SOX's! (I opened THAT door, MaineDem)

4. Reading? LIVING HISTORY

Have a great rest of your week MaineDem!

love and hugs,

Mina

7. How's my DU mommy doing?
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 10:04 AM by jmm
Thanks for the links to the diabetes threads. I don't have it but it runs in my family so I like to read as much on the subject as I can.

1. What would you do if you won the million plus lottery ? What are your lucky numbers?

The first thing I'd do is ask for some financial advice from my grandfather (he's the family expect on money issues) and my bank. Of course I'd share some with my loved ones.

My lucky number is 8. I went to the track once and since I didn' know what I was doing I just picked the number 8 and stuck with it for every race. I won about $50 that night and since then it's been my lucky number.

2. What is your favorite kitchen gadget/appliance/utensil ? (Yes, including the George Forman Grill)

I love the Forman Grill! It helped me get through college. I didn't like most of the dorm food so my last two years I got off of the meal plan and relied on it alot. My favorite Foreman recipe is a modified version of my Grandma's potato chip chicken. Yeah I know the grill is advertised for healthy cooking and smoothing chicken in potato chips isn't healthy but every now and then I have to treat myself :D.

3. What color socks are you wearing? OR What color stockings are you wearing?

I'm sitting at my home desk barefoot right now. I don't have to work until 4:00 today so I haven't picked out any socks or stockings yet.

4. What book are you reading? Critique?

I'm not reading a book right now.

I'm glad you support my efforts in providing information on Diabetes. As you mention, you can always provide the information and your knowledge to help others.

Now, let me check out your responses:

Lottery Winnings: Your lucky number is "8". I'm going to keep that in mind :) and, of course, your money would be managed "in" the family, Grandfather :).

Kitchen Gadget: George Forman's grill. WOW! Potato Chip Chicken, that sounds good : )

Socks: No socks, for now. That's cool.

Reading: Your reading Monday's 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad !

Here's a tight ((HUG))

8. Good morning Mina!
I think I missed the Monday thread last week--not a good way to start the week!

I heard about Althea Gibson on NPR this morning--so sad. I just KNEW you would do a lovely tribute to her--and you did. Thank you, it was very moving.

I was also sorry to hear about the death of Elia Kazan. In spite of his disgusting behavior during the McCarthy witch hunt, he was a brilliant director who gave us some of Brando's finest moments onscreen.

On to the questions:

1. I would move to Tuscany and buy a vineyard and about 20 dachshund puppies and 100 cats. :)

2. Hmm. There's nothing that beats a really good carbon steel knife. Aspiring chefs, spend all your money on the best knives and pans that you can afford.

3. I am wearing white socks with black cat paw prints on them. :)

4. Currently I am reading a biography of Jane Austen and re-reading Pride and Prejudice at the same time. Both excellent!

Have a great day, all! :hi:

Lottery winnings: Tuscany and a vineyard! Way to go ;-)

Kitchen Gadget: Nothing beats a really good carbon steel knife. I agree!

Socks: White w/ black cat paw prints on them (true to your name girlfriend ;-) )

Reading: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and the biography of Jane Austen. I love Jane Austen.

Have a great rest of your week Cat.

Love ya,

9. Back from a long weekend in Chicago
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 10:13 AM by pmbryant
Hi UGRR! What could be a more wonderful way to be welcomed back to DU after 4 days away while attending my sister's wedding in Chicago than seeing your daily thread. This is a good omen, I think! :hi:

I am sorry to hear that Althea Gibson passed away while I was gone. Thanks for telling her story here.

Questions of the day

1. What would you do if you won the million plus lottery ? What are your lucky numbers?

2. What is your favorite kitchen gadget/appliance/utensil ? (Yes, including the George Forman Grill)

3. What color socks are you wearing? OR What color stockings are you wearing?

(1) I would definitely quit my current job. And I would look into how best to use that money to fund the effort to oust the Bush regime and help build a continuing progressive political movement in this country. (I don't have any particular lucky numbers, but I'll pick '10' since my birthday is '10-10'. :-) )

(2) My favorite kitchen gadget is a dishwasher. :D

(3) Let me check. Hmmm. Kind of a greenish-brown and black thing going here.

(4) Paul Krugman's 'The Great Unraveling'. Still early in it, but this is definitely required reading for all!

Happy Monday!

EDIT: I should also add that it's great to hear about the diabetes support group here. I don't have diabetes, but it does run in my family. (My uncle has it, in particular, and has been living with it for decades.) When I was younger, my Dad was always worried that his kids could end up with it, but we've all been fortunate so far. Thanks for the support group.

37. Hi Professor Peter! I hope you enjoyed your long weekend in Chicago!
I miss you in the moderator forum Peter. Thanks for the kind words on behalf of Althea Gibson.

OK, questions:

Lottery Winnings: Well, Peter's walking from the job and I don't blame you one bit! You deserve a break because you work so hard! More important, you would, and I quote "I would look into how best to use that money to fund the effort to oust the Bush regime and help build a continuing progressive political movement in this country."

What a wonderful thing to say Peter. Not thinking only of yourself, but others. That is why I love you so much :loveya:

Kitchen Gadget: Something helpful ;-) A dishwasher!

Socks: a greenishbrown color. I think I know what you mean ;-)

Reading: Paul Krugman's 'The Great Unraveling' Excellent selection Peter!

Once again, thanks for stopping in the UGRR to say hello. Have a great rest of your week Peter.

10. Morning to all in the UGRR!
Well that cake sure looks good! If I were in NYC I would find Sylvia's restaurant and have some good food!

It’s a beautiful cool fall day here in St Louis and I am lovin’ it!

I’m at work so I have to make this quick…now on to the questions and my answers.

1.If I was blessed enough to win the lottery (there is a group at my workplace and we play each week) I would QUIT MY JOB!!! It does not mean I would lay about and do nothing for there are far more important things to do than answer to a demanding boss all day. I would get a part time job working in a book store or newsstand and the rest of my time would be spent on Tikkun Olam (repair of the world..activism).

2.I really don’t have a favorite kitchen gadget as I am not much of a cook. I make really fast things.

3.I wear white socks. Boring I know but I primarily wear tennis shoes or Birkenstocks

4.I am currently reading Al Franken’s book, Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them. I love it! Although I tend toward more serious political books I like how he is able to convey the message using humor. I think humor attracts more people than boring rhetoric or analysis.

Have a wonderful Autumn day out there in DU land! There’s a Bush family that needs to be sent packin’ in November 2004!

38. Hi ikojo ! Good Monday to you and thanks for dropping in to say hello!

I'm glad your having a nice cool fall day in St. Louis. Fall is my favorite time of the year. The colors are so beautiful and yes, the nice cool breeze, feel so nice. I love Halloween and it was a childhood tradition that I have always enjoyed.

I see you like that Red Velvet Cake. So do I.

OK, on to the questions!

Lottery winnings: " Tikkun Olam (repair of the world..activism)". Repair the world of activism, it doesn't get any better than that! I hope you win the lottery :)

Kitchen Gadget: You work fast, fast, fast in the kitchen!

Socks: White *NOT BORING*

Reading: Al Franken’s book, Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them.

Have a wonderful Fall week ahead of you and thanks ikogo of reminding me of the wonderful days of Autumn, my favorite time of the year !

Love and hugs,

Mina/UGRR :hi:

12. Mina, Mina, MINA! Your Daily is lookin REAL GOOD TODAY! :-)
This edition of Monday 'In' the Undergroundrailroad might top the last or even the last, last. But I love them all.

Most important was your tribute to the great Althea Gibson. We have lost another great African-American hero and sports great. She was a champion and yet, she did not earn the money that so many sport's figures of today make. She kept her dignity and she was a lady in a sport that was not meant for Blacks during her time of championships. What talent and determination. She paved the way for so many and your tribute is very appropriate Mina. We can always count on you to honor those that we are loosing with increasing frequency. Once again, thank you Mina.

Now, re Sylvia's Resturant. I have been to the Harlem restaurant and enjoyed my meal, BIG TIME! The atmosphere in the restaurant is very down home and elegant all rolled into one. I had those famous candied yams and the famous red velvet cake (thanks for the slice, Mina). Again you pay tribute to a self-made woman and I am proud of Mrs. Sylvia Woods.

Also, thank for the additional links to the meeting room forum's Diabetic Club. I am once again, going to print out my usual 30 copies and hand them out in the office.

Mina, why don't they put your column on the front page? You must devote a lot of time in preparing this and it is beyond just a link in the lounge. It has so much good information and I just wonder if it would receive more coverage on the front page. Even your information about the champions of the Civil Rights era provides so much educational information, things I would not know unless I read them here in the Undergroundrailroad.

OK, now, let me get myself to the questions.

1. Lottery Winnings? Well I would give a chunk to DU. They have helped so many. I would go for my PHD and buy my wife a beautiful home.

2. I love the microwave oven ;-)

3. Black socks.

4. LIVING HISTORY by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

Back to work and thanks MIna for a great, GREAT daily today.

Thanks for sharing your comments about Althea Gibson. The first black woman win Wimbelton and she was raised in HARLEM USA.

Also in Harlem is Sylvia's and I see you have sampled those delicious yams!

On to the questions!

Lottery winings: Would give a chunk to DU! How very nice :)

Kitchen Gadget: Microwave Oven. YES! My personal favorite ;-)

14. Hi Mina. Thanks for the Red Velvet Cake. I'll miss Althea Gibson.

Very nice tribute. I will look forward to your comments next week regarding the funeral.

I am Diabetic. I will post at the meeting room today. Thanks for putting that information into your thread. You look out for all of us Mina and it is nice that you care about many who are forgotten. BlondeAtLast, thank you.

I am watching Leon Harris now. I hope he will stay on at CNN. I will send an email supporting him (do they read all of them I often wonder?).

Also, thank you for the SYLVIA'S information. I do, in fact, purchase her special spice. I use just a little because I am on a salt-free diet. But it really enhances the flavor of the food.

QUESTIONS OF THE DAY

1. If I won the lottery I would buy a summer home and live like it's "summer" all year round. I nice little cottage with all the things I love inside. I would like a library and a computer room. I would make sure all my grandchildren and great grandchildren have college educations. I would also set up a foundation for African-Americans from the Civil Rights era who made a difference in our current laws. I worked with many of them and some of them died alone with no money because they lacked education and resources.

2. I like the new water sprayer that I had installed in my kitchen. I can power wash the veggies and fruits. It's truly amazing !

3. White comfy cotton socks.

4. Well, today I'm catching up on my MARTHA STEWART LIVING magazines. So that is my "read" for the day and, of course, I'm reading Monday's 'IN' The UGRR .

Have a great week Mina and DU.

42. Hey GoGo! How are you?
Thanks for the those kind words GoGo (a name I just love !).

Yes, on sad note, once again we have lost a great person. Althea Gibson was certainly a great person as well as a great athlete.

So you like Sylvia's seasoning salt. I'm not tempted to purchase it after your positive reviews. Meeting the challenges of Diabetes is difficult. I try to make the food as interesting as possible. Sometimes a small piece of fruit or salad dressing makes all the difference.

Now, on to the questions!

Lottery Winnings: I would also set up a foundation for African-Americans from the Civil Rights era who made a difference in our current laws.

Now that is a great idea!

Kitchen Gadget: Your water sprayer on the sink, brand new and no doubt very useful.

Socks: Comfy white socks :)

Reading : Martha Stewart Living Magazines

GoGo, I want you to have a wonderful rest of your week and I appreciate your comments very much.

Love,

UGRR/Mina

15. Won the lottery?!?!?!
Hee hee! I'd buy houses in affluent neighborhoods and donate them to low-income housing charities.

My newest toy is a heavy-duty, industrial strength wine bottle opener. It was very expensive, but well worth it. It gets the cork out smoothly, the cork never breaks, and the wine even tastes better now. :D

Gray athletic socks.

Books I'm reading, and a brief comment on each one:

Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them (Al Franken) - entertaining, lightweight political commentary that does a good job of ridiculing the right.

Porno (Irvine Welsh) - author of Trainspotting, which is not nearly as twisted as this new book of his. Written entirely in Scottish Slang, it's very hard to understand. "Totally ragin, Franco slams a fist intae the palm ay his hand n starts pacin up n doon." The whole book is like that.

A Song for Arbonne (Guy Gavriel Kay) - A tale of two kingdoms, one dominated by men and male gods, the other by women and their goddesses. Very good book so far.

The Great Book of Amber (Roger Zelazny) - I read this series of 10 books when I was in high school, but I read them in the wrong order. It's much easier to understand now.

The Gunslinger (Stephen King) - he re-wrote it and revised it, so I'll re-read it. :)

16. Ooh, ZenLefty, I have a question about the GGKay book...
I've read his trilogy, the Fionavar Tapestry. Have you read those? Is it similar? I just loved those books, then I went and bought another book of his and it was too "fantasy-y" for me. The concept sounds interesting on this one you're reading. Thanks for any info!

22. I'm very familiar with his work
Interestingly, Fionavar Tapestry was a little too "fantasy-y" for me. I didn't like the fact that he was using generic creatures like the lios alfar (?) which are really just glorified elves so please don't try and fool us Mr. Kay. But the characters and scenery and plots and histories were just as fantastic as the rest of his works. I've only made it through the first one of this series, though, and it seems the rest will be compelling.

There's a common thread in almost every one of his books: a bulletproof prince with a superhero henchman/bodyguard type. In this series, it's Diarmuid and Coll. These characters seem to repeat in other books, just with different names. The bulletproof prince is always impossibly attractive to every member of the opposite sex, of course.

I think Tigana is my all time favorite, though it too is very fantasy-y. The ending of that book is worth the whole darn story. Plot twists in fiction are usually cheap, but this one will make you bolt right out of your chair!

Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors are more like historical fiction, not very fantasy-y at all. It's about political intrigue in the most powerful and largest city in the world, detailed right down to the influence of the church, the importance of chariot-racing to the people (it's like hockey in Canada), the dying art of wizards, the waning mythology of older cultures, and the devoted work of a mosaicist hired by the emperor, to create a mosaic that just might change the world. There's a lot of subtle right vs. left politics in it. I think it's his best work to date.

Lions of Al-Rassan - parallels the conflict between Christianity and Muslim, with heretics stuck in the middle. Great book, sad ending.

27. Wow, thank you very much!!
Mostly what I liked about Fionavar Tapestry was that there were humans from our world in it--so I looked at it through their eyes and was suitably shocked by the fantastic creatures and settings. I like that "crossover" aspect of it and always look for fantasy books that have characters from "our world" in them. I do know what you mean though--the lios alfar are so much like the elves from LOTR and the uagath (?)are so much like the orcs from LOTR. There are a lot of LOTR parallels in that book--Rakoth=Sauron, etc.

Tigana is the one I bought that I felt was too fantasy-y. I LOVE a good plot twist though, so perhaps I'll actually finish it! :)

I think I will try the one you're reading now. I like the concept. I see you have another post about that one below so I will go read that post right now! Thanks for all the info-- :yourock:

24. A little more about Song for Arbonne
It's really interesting. Arbonne is a kingdom where women hold much of the power, and troubadors (songwriters) elicit much more fame and fortune than warriors do. Might does not make right, but a good song might. :)

To the north of them, the more masculine Gorhaut has stuck a peace treaty with its warring neighbors. It is no secret that this frees their armies to invade Arbonne, which is seen as weaker and easily subdued. Gorhaut sees the women rulers and their ostentatious demeanor as being an affront to their god, for women should be subservient and docile. Unfortunately, Arbonne lacks the strength to defend against the armies of Gorhaut...

Now, let me check out your responses:

Lottery Winnings: Buy houses in affluent neighborhoods and donate them to low-income housing charities. What a wonderful donation Zen, that is really a deep thoughtful idea.

Kitchen Gadget: A heavy-duty, industrial strength wine bottle opener. Now, that's a kitchen gadget! And the wine just "tastes" better ;-)

Socks: Gray athletic socks

Books: Thanks Zen for this great presentation !

17. Hi Mina! and DU
Sylvia's Restaurant and recipes sound sinful, but delicious. I'm glad you mentioned the diabetes support group. This is a devastating disease but it can be managed. What can I say about Althea Gibson? She was inspirational.

On to the questions:

1. Lottery..I would donate to world environmental organizations and the organizations giving micro loans to women. Give more to campaigns and then put aside money for retirement and kid's education. Then take a long trip around the world.

2. My favorite gadget is my food processor. I got it 21 years ago and it still runs great. It makes some cooking so much easier.

3. I'm wearing white socks.

4. I'm reading Hillary Clinton's book. It's like reliving all of the rightwing propaganda and learning a different version. I'm emjoying it tremendously.

You Kitchen Gadget: Your food processor and it's still going strong after 21 years!

Socks: white comfy socks :) love 'em.

18. Good morning, Mina!
My answers:

1. What would you do if you won the million plus lottery ? What are your lucky numbers?

I'd buy a house for my commune, make sure my friends and family were well taken-care-of, take a couple of trips, live off the interest from what's left over, and set up a nonprofit or two. My lucky number is 445, but the lottery numbers I play in Lotto--on the rare occasions that I do play it--are computer-picks.

2. What is your favorite kitchen gadget/appliance/utensil ? (Yes, including the George Forman Grill)

The Decadent Can Opener, simply because of its name. It's an electric can opener that Jag has proclaimed "decadent" and that he scorns, and I like to use it because it annoys him!

3. What color socks are you wearing? OR What color stockings are you wearing?

None! I'm barefoot right now.

4. What book are you reading? Critique?

Verse and Universe: Poems about Science and Mathematics. It's a well-put-together collection with a few real gems, like a poem about Boolean algebra.

Tucker

Tucker, hello! Long time no see! Good to see you in the UGRR.

OK, your the official poet of the Undergroundrailroad and I always enjoy your written words Tucker!

Now, to the questions!

Lotto winnings: Buy a home, travel and set up a nonprofit (or two) organization. I'm very proud that most DUers would give the money to good causes. Lucky number is 445, OK Tucker. I'm going to give it a try. :)

Kitchen gadget: The Decadent Can Opener with a great story attached to it. :)

Socks: None. In the natural.

Reading: Poems about Science and Mathematics. It's a well-put-together collection with a few real gems, like a poem about Boolean algebra.

Well, that's why your the official poet of the Undergroundrailroad Tucker :)

19. Hi undergroundrailroad
:hi:
answers:

1. What would I do if I won the lottery?

I think I would first off find a place to build a house for me and my kids so we can be together again. Next I would make sure my family was brought out of debt.

Then I would donate to DU and make sure leftpeoplefinishfirst gets to go on the field trip.

After that I would try and make some good investments so that the money will continue to multiply. Other than that I really guess I would play it by ear.

lucky numbers are only lucky if they are picked--right?

2.Favorite kitchen gadget would be:

definitely would not be the electric can opener--I can neveroperate that thing right. So I guess it would be the griddle--I cook everything on that thing.

3. My socks are white

4. I would like to be reading any book by Piers Anthony but the ones that I own are in Texas so that is out.

Have a great week DU

26. Good day to you, Mina
:hi:
I'm going to start off by turning the tables on you & asking you a question: How much time do you spend putting together each Monday's Daily thread? You always do such a marvelous job, I'll bet it takes a chunk of your time to develop your ideas & search for everything you need.

No cake for me today--I'm in one of my "being good" phases this month!

My answers:

1. If I won the million plus lottery, I'd put some aside in a retirement fund, & spend the rest of it on my favorite charities, as well as buying a small farm so my husband & I can take in even more animals than we already have.

2. Favorite kitchen gadget/appliance/utensil--my food processor. I use it almost daily.

3. White socks today, to go with my white tennies.

4. Right now I'm taking a break from serious-minded non-fiction & reading The House of Stairs by Ruth Rendell (writing as Barbara Vine), who has been called "The finest living practitioner of the mystery novel". I'm not yet halfway through the book, but am enjoying it very much; the author is, IMO, unsurpassed at creating psychological suspense.

33. Wow! Nice column. I'm glad I saw it!
Excellent tribute to Althea Gibson! An amazing woman, and one we should do more to remember...

I had to look over the Red Velvet cake recipe. Looks yummy, but the added food coloring makes that a younger recipe than I expected. The really old Red Velvets were made with boiling water, baking soda and Cocoa to get the red color. It has only been in the last twenty or thirty years that they used the food coloring to get that amazing color! (and a reduced sodium, too, I might add1)

To answer your Questions of the day

1. What would you do if you won the million plus lottery ? What are your lucky numbers?

I'd make sure my daughter never had to worry about money in her life, then I'd open a free clinic that even provides Dental care.

2. What is your favorite kitchen gadget/appliance/utensil ? (Yes, including the George Forman Grill)

No doubt about it My Mircowave is my love and my life in the kitchen! I don't remember the last time I steamed a veggie on the stove, and I cook all my fish in there. I have no idea how I lived without one for so many years... I do not understand people who tell me they only use them to re-heat leftovers!

3. What color socks are you wearing? OR What color stockings are you wearing?

White. All white anklets. (Hey--they go great with my sweat pants and oversized t-shirt!)

4. What book are you reading? Critique?

Hmm. I've got a couple going right now. One is my secret vice (Shh! Don't tell anybody!) An Elizabeth Lowell Thriller/Romance. The other is a bit more respectable, I'm working my way back thru Starhawk's novel the Fifth Sacred Thing. I make it a point to read it about once a year... It reminds me of who I am.

Thanks for giving the plug about the Diabetes thread in the meeting room. I saw one person this AM who mentioned she saw it here!

Pax to you, and happy Monday!

Laura

51. Thanks for those very kind remarks. I'm glad you stopped in the UGRR!
I want you to know I appreciate your comments very, very much.

On to the questions:

Lottery Winnings: Daughter would share the winnings and you would open Dental Clinics. I am just proud of all the DUers , the majority who said they would provide some kind of saftey net with their lottery winnings. Being a DUer is just so great. :)

Kitchen Gadget: Your microwave oven! It sounds as if you love it a lot.

Socks: white anklets

Reading: See above. *I'm not telling!*

Love and hugs

39. now those are REALLY good questions...
Anyways, my answers:

1. Actually, i have a small list of things I would do if I won the lottery (btw, lucky number = 7)

1) I'd buy new dance pads for my Dance Dance Revolution game, because, well....I need them.

2) I'd send Leftpeoplefinishfirst whatever she needed to go to Washington

3) buy a LOT of these drinks:

(and I mean a LOT, like about 500 bottles. Should keep me supplied until next week ;-))

4) Go to Krispy Kreme...'nuff said :)

5) Do random good things for my friends and buy about $5000 or so worth of crap I kinda wanted but thought was ridiculously high priced...

6) Give what little amount I DIDN'T spend on donuts to charity. Because, franly, I don't need it then, i'd be perfectly happy :D

2. Microwave, because I use it the most and it makes CDs and Light Bulbs do crazy stuff :)

3. White Socks. One is gray on the bottom of my foot and the other is all white...

4. I'm reading "Lies" by Al Franken. I'll give you 3 guesses on what I think about it...;-)

52. tuesday morning hello for the monday morning thread
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 11:42 PM by BigMcLargehuge
I am on a much needed vacation this week and left early this morning to fish with my youngest brother (we caught nothing) and spend some time with my dad, my Mom, and my middle brother.

Overall it was a wonderful day.

Tuesday, that is today, is my 8th anniversary married to Mrs. McLargehuge!!!!!!

Who'd a thunk it...

as for the questions:

Questions of the day

1. What would you do if you won the million plus lottery ? What are your lucky numbers?

I have no lucky numbers and I don't play the lottery. With odds at approximately 250 million to 1 for every numerical pick I have almost the exact same odds of winning if I simply flush a dollar down the toilet, that is, 250 million to 0.

Assuming this were a parallel universe and I didn't just write that last sentence, AND that I played, AND that I won, here is the list of things I'd do.

1. Give my Mom, Dad, two bothers, and my Mom and Dad in-laws $50,000 each. (1,000,000 - 300,000 = 700,00)

2. Pay off the McLargehuge McDebts (700,000 - 30,000 = 670,000)

3. Establish a 100,000 college scholarship at my old high school (Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School) for any students heading to college with an intention to teach. (670,000 - 100,000 = 570,000)

4. Place half the remainder in a savings account or money market for my Son, Nephiew, and Nieces. (570,000 - 280,000 = 280,000)

5. Purchase a house with a down payment of 200,000. (280,000 - 200,000 = 80,000)

6. Take Mrs and Little Mclargehuge around the world with stops in Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Ulan Bator, Moscow, Paris, Munich, Lisbon, Madeira (from whence my family springs), Sussex, Nova Scotia, Vancouver, Mexico City, New York City. (80,000 - 30,000 = 50,000)

7. Put the remainder in an interest bearing account for future needs.

2. What is your favorite kitchen gadget/appliance/utensil ? (Yes, including the George Forman Grill)

I have a wicked paring knife made in Japan of folded steel (like the way a traditional samurai sword is made). It's so sharp I think it might be able to split atoms. I love it but it scares the ever-lovin bejeezus out of me.

3. What color socks are you wearing? OR What color stockings are you wearing?

I am currently sockless, thus, the color is "nude"

4. What book are you reading? Critique?

Do technical scripts count? No... I am currently reading (albeit slowly) the following (rereads denoted by an *)

Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad *. An absolutely brilliant book about the depth of evil in the Belgian Congo and how civilized men succumb to greed and brutality.

Lord Jim, Joseph Conrad* Another brilliant book. This one follows a man running from the guilt of surviving a shipwreck that killed hundreds. And explores the colonial mindset in India.

American Goddess at the Rape of Nanking, can't remember the author right off hand. A biography of Minnie Vautrine a missionary in China and president of Ginling College. She along with several westerners (including a Nazi) struggled against the Imperial Japanese Army to maintain a safety zone for refugee Chinese trapped in the city.

That's all I have for this belated version of the Day in the Lounge :)

Better late than never. Hey BigMcLargehuge, you are one of the

regulars in the UGRR and I will take you late anytime.

Wow, congratulations on your 8th wedding anniversary to Mrs. McLargehuge! And it sounds like you had a wonderful trip with your Dad, Mom and your brother.

OK Questions :

Lottery Winnings: Trips! Trips! Trips!

Kitchen gadget: Your "wicked" paring knife made in Japan of folded steel!

Socks: Bare footen ;-) or La Nude

Reading: Yes, technical scripts *do *count! Your doing a re-read on many great titles:

Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad *. An absolutely brilliant book about the depth of evil in the Belgian Congo and how civilized men succumb to greed and brutality.
Lord Jim, Joseph Conrad* Another brilliant book. This one follows a man running from the guilt of surviving a shipwreck that killed hundreds. And explores the colonial mindset in India.
