Then again, what good is slang to kids if it doesn't annoy adults?

should become fashionable to shun all things British in view of their tolerance of Tony "the twit" Blair.

I've disliked and distrusted Blair since the mid '90s, before he was even P.M. I never understood why people like him so much, certainly not why they trust him.

26. "Spot on" derives from an old game played by British military children...
...who's parents were stationed in India.

It was called "coconut shies", and involves throwing a coconut at some bowling-type pins. Hitting the pins was being "spot on".

Both irritate me. The former is arrogant, and the latter is "sheeplish" itself--criticizing people for following the crowd yet the poster is following the crowd by his or her very selection of the word "sheeple."

54. Genteelisms
are my linguistic hates.

People couldn't quite bring themselves to use a normal word in use for a few hundred years, so they had to develop a 'genteel' term for it.

The numerous replacements for lavatory are the worst, I hate to throw stones at Americans but 'restroom' and 'bathroom' are the most gratuitous offenders. These not only fail to convey the actual meaning of the room, but provide an alternative erroneous meaning. A 'restroom' should be a place one can rest for a while and lie-down on a couch; a 'bathroom' is where one bathes (granted in many cases there is a lavatory there as well). Our own British offences include 'spend a penny'. Yikes, if one need to go, just leave the group saying 'excuse me'.

The other one is the conversion of nouns into verbs and vice-versa where such verbs already exist. Anybody who attempts to dialogue with me will get a swift punch in the face; I talk, I don't dialogue.

I always thought "see a man about a horse"--the American version of "spend a penny," I presume--was actually kind of graphic. We don't spend pennies here. We drop loads. ;)

And I agree about "nouning verbs." :grr:

What should we say? The shitter?

Though perhaps a tad graphic for polite company, crapper makes more sense as Thomas Crapper was a well known manufacturer of lavatories. The normal English terms are lavatory, loo (which is an abreviation of lavatory), and toilet (which I think is a ghastly word).

I think that the whole pretending that nothing is happening thing is silly; it's the nonsensical Victorian pseudo-morality.

84. I hate that.
Actually, anything where white people are trying to sound "street" to be cool.

For example:
"I loves me some _____ (chocolate, fried chicken, tall women, etc.)" /Shudder

81. You know what I'm saying
over and over and over again. It's what all the rappers are saying these days instead of "um" - wherever a normal person would pause and utter "um" now you hear "you know what i'm saying...."

Drives me up a wall.

ok, here's another.....when you ask a young person these days if they'd like something......something to eat, whatever.....and they reply "No, I'M GOOD!" What is that all about? I hate that!!!

You're good? Good at what?

I posted it in the middle of the night, where my threads normally die a quick and painless death. Its been kinda fun to see other people's most hated phrases.

I know 24/7 is useful, but please God, save me from "I think we have will have come away with some significant learnings from this research."

87. I Hear It All The Time In Northern England
I don't use it, and i don't think i know anyone here who uses it, but i hear my British coworkers use it all the time. Probably more colloquial to them. It doesn't bother me. When i'm there, i expect to hear British expressions.

91. Like. Goes. Got.
"Like" - Still in annoying and incorrect overuse.

"Goes" - used instead of "says" or "said". Growr.

"Got" - used instead of or in addition to "have" or "must". Pffffft. Rowr.

96. When I was a kid,
when my mom left the room to put on her make-up, she used to say "gotta go put my face on". I found that quite odd.
Anybody who was a kid back in the fifties remember that?

99. "Do you understand?"
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 12:38 PM by WritersBlock
I had a supervisor who used that one continuously. I think he meant it to mean "is what I am saying making any sense?" but it always seemed to come out as "are you intelligent enough, you pathetic piece of illiterate scum, to understand my superior thoughts?"

On edit - grammar, for I am a pathetic piece of illiterate scum

they use those terms on all those Home & Garden Shows, can't anyone just change something, paint something, frame something etc. without the "out" or "up" always being added. :wtf:

107. The use of "mmmmK?" is particularly annoying...
...reminds me of the biggest smartasses/know-it-all's in school who'd always raise their hands at 3pm on a Friday afternoon just before the buzzer and say, "teacher, teacher! You forgot to give us our homework for the weekend!"
