Are you trying to do someone else's job? |
|
Shame on you. Several years ago I decided to tile our kitchen floor. How hard could it be? A very frustrating day and a half later it dawned on me. I was trying to take someone else's job. No tile layer ever came on my airplane and said "Move over, I'll take this leg." I was so ashamed. I called a tile guy. It was a half day job. Looks real good. Ever get in over your head on a project/task?

1. I understand your point ... |
|
... I guess. However, some of us cannot afford to pay other people to do what has to be done around the house. To keep this especially relevant to your example, I have re-tiled a couple of rooms in my house ... not so much because I wanted to do it, but it had to be done, and I could not begin to afford to pay someone else to do it for me. Luckily, both rooms look spectacular. :-)
Plumbing is about the only thing I don't tackle; with other things I have developed proficiency out of necessity. Our plumber makes more than I do with years of higher education behind me (this according to his wife - she has been a friend for years and we probably get a better rate because of it.) He works like hell, mind you, and is very good at what he does. His wife doesn't work, and they live in a nicer house than we do. Other home repair folks charge ungodly rates, and I'll never call one unless I am desperate.

2. I will trade you one plumbing job |
|
for my next tile job. I'm pretty good at plumbing. Every tile I tried to score and cut broke to pieces. I will say the tile guy cheated though. He used a water cooled diamond saw. ;-)

3. I have an excellent fellow tile-cutter ... |
|
... I'm married to. Top-notch. For the intricate cuts we swung back by the home improvement mega-store and had those cuts done by someone with the equipment to do it better than we were able. Cost about 25 cents a cut ... maybe a few bucks for each room, at most. :-)

My Dad and brother are both floor installers. I do understand when people don't have the money to pay for services tho. (I do my own taxes, my b/f cuts his own hair, buddies fix my car for a 12 pack, etc.)
