Napoleon Dynamite?
Why is this movie so funny? It's so stupid- but hilarious... its a strange little film

"I noticed you are drinking 1 percent milk... is it because you think you're fat? cuz you're not... you could be drinking whole if you wanted to"

"Theres a buttload of gangs at this school. This one gang kept trying to get me to join because I'm pretty good with a bowstaff"

lol...

2. I HATED this movie
It wasn't really bad, exactly, but it just wasn't funny either. After reading your post, I suspect that the movie perhaps looked better in script form. That milk thing SHOULD have been hilarious...

21. I agree

There were a couple parts that made me laugh but only a fraction compared to the rest of the people in the theatre. I know this has been said before, but what bothers me most about the movie is that its main character is an outcast but unlike most movies about outcasts you are not given any reasons to sympathize with or like the guy. I didn't care whether things turned out well for him or not; not because I'm unsympathetic and mean but simply because I didn't have any reason to feel compassion for him. Plus, I saw the movie in a movie theatre in Austin with a crowd of mostly preppy-looking college kids who were laughing their tails off; I suspected this had more to do with them reliving their high school days of mocking the dorks they went to school with than that the movie was really that hilarious to them. This made it even more difficult to enjoy than it might have been otherwise. But that's just my take...

52. The word "Austin" explains a lot
While Austin is defeinitely in my top-five-places-to-move-to-list, and I have many friends that went to UT, my personal opinion of Autin movie-goers is that they can be divided into two camps:

1) Those who watched one friggin French film in some 101 film appreciation class, don't have dates Saturday night and hence smoke a lot of frigging weed and rent films with subtitles, and now think they're Robert -- Fucking Rodriguez -- since they went to UT Austin.

2) They're really immature, inbred Aggies in disguise, still dividing the world into jocks and nerds even though they left high school behind. It pains me to say this, since I come from a family of Teaxas A&M alumni.

Or maybe I'm just overly cynical...

Yes, the movie was completely devoid of any sort of plot, but the humor was great. Napoleon's voice is half the reason some of those lines are funny. The most quotable movie since The Big Lebowski.

but we never got to see the bass! no fair.

i cannot tell you how much teenagers & college kids love this movie. my stepdaughter will not stop quoting & speaking in kip's voice. they're not laughing at these characters; they see themselves in one aspect or another.

i asked my stepkids who was the biggest "loser" in the film, and they both thought it was uncle rico - as he was 40 & stuck. all the other characters grow & triumph while retaining their oddness.

it was pretty sweet i guess.

That really confused us at first. My friend even said it was set in the 80s and I said "Then how is Kip chatting in a chat room on the internet? And how come Uncle Rico wants to go BACK to 1982?"

So we realized it IS set today, but maybe those people in that town are just in a time warp because they are so rural?

50. My take on Napoleon Dynamite
First off, I have to say I LOVE the movie.

I, personally, think it is a movie geared to the late 20s-30s crowd.
It is set in the present day, but I really think it is meant to talk to people who are still dealing with high school issues.

The character of Uncle Rico I think is meant to be cautionary. Don't let yourself get stuck on what "might have been".
I also think that Napoleon, his brother, Pedro and Deb are very sympathetic characters. They are outcasts and dorks, but ultimately, it doesn't matter. I think the message of the movie is, that if you identify with these characters, it's not so bad after all.
Yeah, you may have been a dork in H.S. lots of us were. Who cares?
The important thing is are you happy now?
I think it is pretty clear that everyone finds their bliss by the end of the movie, except maybe Uncle Rico....not sure what that girl showing up at his van is supposed to mean...his ex-girlfriend coming back to him?

Anyway, if you saw the movie once and didn't like it. Watch it again and think about what I've said.

65. My kids...
.. (sons 12/14) mentioned this movie, and the younger's mom got him the DVD for Christmas.

I watched it with them last night. I think it is a great movie, funny and more, and is destined to be a "cult classic".

I won't expound at lennth, but one thing about this movie that struck me was there is no fart joke, no poop joke, no overt sexual stuff, just a movie that is well-crafted enough to stand on its own without resorting to that stuff. Not that I have a problem with fart jokes, poop jokes or overt sexual stuff - it just indicated the writer's dedication to sticking with new cheap tricks instead of the currently popular ones :)
