Would The Doors have been any better had they a Bass player? |
|
Wonder what the Unidentified Bass Player has to say about this? BTW, where has the UBP been anyway? Haven't seen him around in quite a while.

1. They actually did in many of their live shows |
|
They hired one many times. I've seen some of those concerts on video, and I really didn't think it made much of a difference in their overall sound.

2. You mean ANOTHER member with no discernible talent? |
|
They already had Morrison. What more do you want?

3. They did on a few of the albums |
|
Towards the end there. Personally I think Mazarek did a pretty damn good job of holding down the bottom end. He was heavily influenced by guys like Larry Young who would use their organs for the bass parts.

6. I agree about Manzerek |
|
His organ playing is what gave The Doors their unique sound. Kreiger and Densmore were both talented, but Manzerek formed the backbone of the band. He was even a good singer, a few times Morrison was too drunk to perform and Ray would do the vocals. He sounded almost exactly like Jim.

4. No, because they still would have had Jim "I'm so clever" Morrison. |

The legendary guitarist Lonnie Mack played bass on a few tracks, and it is one of their best albums. Who knows? Maybe so.

8. The Doors' instrumentation was unique |
|
A keyboardist who mixed Bach-like scale exercises with garage rock organ chords, a guitar player who played largely flamenco-style, and a drummer who cut his teeth playing jazz. Filled out with a baritone lead vocalist.
Sometimes, less is more.
