I WOULD NOT suggest you use it. Let the little critters eat to their hearts content........in the garbage.

11. I used to have to check every thing then put it into plastic. |
|
I found it usually was from places that did not really sell food. like pick-up stores, or in the South.

Best way to keep your rice and grain products from getting them is to freeze them for a few days when you bring stuff home from the store. It kills the larvae and keeps them from hatching. Lovely isn't it? Make sure you check the rest of your food in your pantry. http://www.pestproducts.com/weevils.htm

When I was cleaning it out.
Everything else is tightly sealed and a LOT newer.

7. Sounds to me like Indian Meal Moth larvae |
|
They may be in other things such as flour, cracker boxes etc.
You can get "pantry pest traps" (pheromone)that cost $4 each to get rid of the pesky critters.
Just throw all grain-like foodstuffs away first!! :scared:

If you are desperate: During the war, people would sift out the weevils so they could still use the flour.

I don't think weevils count as fiber. Probably protein catagory.
Actually I'm just posting everywhere I can trying to get out of this damnable 700 club!

13. They don't bother me. Seem to prefer corn products. |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 09:57 AM by patcox2
I get them sometimes in pasta, flour, crackers, but they seem to really prefer cornmeal and masa, for some reason.
I have no problem either sifting them out or just picking them out (If you boil pasta with them in it, they just float up and wash away when you strain it, for example. No big deal.
Are they really weevils? They metamorphose into little, delicate, but drab, moth-like creatures. Bad flyers, easy to catch on the wing. A couple fly out of my pantry every time I open it. I have heard them called "millers."
That weevil link in the post above doesn't seem to be describing these little guys I get. Mine are in ground meal and flouor, not whole grains, and are more like tiny caterpillars, very very delicate little things, very soft.

I've had a couple of run-ins with those little buggers. If you put one on a surface it'll crawl around in circles, before you smash it. That's where the name comes from.
