Is anyone familiar with the haunted house at 50 Berkeley Square in London?
I found an old book of ghost stories from the UK, and in it they mention one house, 50 Berkeley Square, that has a very scary haunting. One room is supposedly so haunted that people die of fright or go mad if they try to spend the night there. It is the domain of the 'nameless horror', a ghost no one can identify.
This is actually one of the most famous haunted houses in Britain and it still stands. The house is now occupied by a rare book dealer.

1. Yeah - it's a famous old story.
Two sailors took a dare to stay in the room - one was found impaled on the railings outside, the other had been reduced to a gibbering idiot.

2. That and the one where the Lord was dared to stay in the room
and when they found him he had died of fright.
I was wondering if any of these stories were authenticated or if they were just 19th century folklore

4. Probably a mix of both.
Of course, if you were one of those sailors and you wanted to kill the other - that's a pretty good way of doing it.

3. I never heard of it, but I think the Bell Witch of Tennesee stories
are pretty damn scary. I never really want to visit or drive through that part of Tennesee.

"For several decades now, the house has been occupied by a firm of antique booksellers, "Maggs Brothers," who insist that they have never had the slightest reason to believe the place to be haunted, despite being one of the most famous locations in the world. "

That link, with the letter that shows despite their claims, no employee ever stays in the house alone is interesting

8. My favorite haunted place is Ireland's Leap Castle.....

I picked this account because of the lovely picture. Since it was written, new owners have had some problems with the revenants--but have made some progress.

Oliver St. John Gogarty gave a truly chilling account of the major Thing in his wonderful As I Was Going Down Sackville Street.

9. Yeah - I saw a TV doc on that place.
There really is something up there.

Same goes for Chillingham Castle, of course.

10. Yes I heard of it....
Read it in a ghost book during my HIgh School years... except when I read about it, it was called the horrible nothing. It gave a few examples and one of them was the sailor getting impaled... I almost forgot about this "haunting" completely.
