49. Eating a lot of bread does work.
That's how I gained weight when I was 14. I wasn't really trying to gain weight on purpose, it was more like I was always hungry. I had always been underweight up until that point. I remember for breakfast I would eat cereal with skim milk and one to two whole english muffins with margarine and low fat cream cheese on them. I can't recall what I ate for lunch, I guess whatever there was to eat at school. Then when I got home, at about 3pm, I would eat another one to two whole english muffins with margarine and cream cheese before dinner. Basically, I ate a lot of english muffins.

If it's not close to 200calories a bottle it's not any good. Add about a six-pack a day of those to your current diet and watch your fat cells buldge (and your liver die)

50. Beer is the only thing that works for me.
Honestly. But it makes posting on DU hazardous, especially in the Lounge.

If I overeat without drinking beer I simply get hyperactive and can't sleep or sit still.

I also have a problem remembering to eat, but getting married and having kids solved that problem. If I don't remember to eat, they certainly do! We eat breakfast and dinner together almost every day.

Pretty much I've decided it's okay to be thin.

24. if you are getting lots of physical activity you will be hungry
also, no excuses, learn how to cook. It's not hard - a few standards with variations, plus some box recipes and you'll be golden.

Learn to grill or broil steak, chicken & fish, plus steam anything you find in the produce section and mostly can get by with adding lemon juice salt & pepper to just about any steamed veggie for additional flavor. You'll be fine.

The most important advice: be who you are, not what you think other people want you to be. We're all amazing shapechangers up to a point, so also remember that if you decide to "change your shape", do it carefully and for the right reasons.

15. NO protein powder
your body can only turn a fixed amount into muscle - the rest gets turned into fat and whatever you can't turn into fat blows holes in your kidneys.

Work out resistance weight training - you need to create stress on your muscles and bones. Stress on your muscles makes them add bulk and stress on your bones makes them add calcium.

Try 45 minutes to an hour three to five days a week, eat three healthy meals a day and get plenty of rest to let your body adapt and grow.

Most of all: be disciplined. Be your own task master and you will see results.

29. I say bullshit!

Actually, excess protein gets excreted out through urine, which is why it's recommended one drink plenty of water if one is eating a lot of protein. Kidney damage was only shown in patients already in renal failure. You think otherwise? Prove it - cite a peer reviewed paper that shows kidney damage in normal healthy adults from excess protein consumption. I dare you.

Muscle is made of protein, so if you're heavily training extra protein consumption will help add muscle quicker. Hillary Swank in the new boxing movie put on 16 lbs of muscle in 5 months or so by boxing a lot and...downing protein shakes!

I recommend www.proteinfactory.com for inexpensive, high quality protein powders, which should be used as a supplement anyway since your protein should be coming from eggs, milk, meat, beans for the most part.

33. sorry I'm not going for the bait
over time excreting large volumes of excess protein causes kidney damage. This is a medical fact taught in medical school.

Advertise your crap somewhere else.

On the side of reasonableness though, yes you can bulk up in the short term with protein powders. Can bunnypants afford Swank's 24/7 trainer and nutrionist for five months? Not.

And your body can only metabolize a fixed amount of protein. The "rest" does not simply get shoved through your kidneys and out your hoo haw - some of it gets turned into fat.

Put that in your shake blender and drink it.

48. Well, if you're going to resort to ad hominem attacks...
Let's be civil and examine recent medical literature, shall we?

In the March 18, 2003 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine a study
conducted by Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston (part of Harvard Med School) was published. The researchers studied 1,624 women aged between 42 and 68 over 11 years.

The conclusion of the study: "Researchers observed no association between high protein intake and decline in kidney function in women with normally functioning kidneys." Easy to read summary:
http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2003/03.13/09-kidney.html

And in a BBC report on the same study, located at:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2859733.stm
the following quote can be found:
Elizabeth Ward, founder and president of the British Kidney Patient Association said: "If you have healthy kidneys, you can't eat enough protein to damage your kidneys.

As I said, healthy kidneys have nothing to fear from protein. The recommended level for athletic people doing weight training is 1g/per pound of lean body tissue, which is hardly excessive by any measure.

As for your other comments...I mentioned Hillary Swank as a example of someone gaining exactly the amount of weight the original poster wanted by doing two things: exercising and increasing protein intake.

And advertising? When and how, exactly? I mentioned a vendor for protein powder that's much less than the stuff sold at GNC etc. which other posters suggested. I have no commercial relationship with them other than as an occasional customer for run-of-the-mill whey protein powder, which I like to consume after lifting weights.

25. Dr. Nick's advice for rapid weight gain:
"Be creative. Instead of making sandwiches with bread, use Pop-Tarts. Instead of chewing gum, chew bacon. And remember, if you're not sure about something, rub it against a piece of paper. If the paper turns clear, it's your window to weight gain. "

...my dad was 5' 10" and weighed 127 lbs his entire adult life.

Then he retired and "ballooned" up to the massive weight of 145 lbs.

That's it. Nothing my German-American mother could feed him ever changed his weight. He was a 'nervous type' and couldn't sweat, either.

Would that I took more after Dad than Mom.

But working out will certainly add muscle...and fat and starches are your friends so Long as you Are Working Out. Been broiling stuff? Start cooking it in butter (never margarine, that poisonous stuff) and adding more complex starches like potatoes to your diet. Put the butter On the Potatoes. Enjoy. :)

Getting pregnant is a sure fire way. You'll gain a ton of weight at first, and then lose it after the baby is born, but the last 10-15 lbs is a bitch to lose. So, your end result is virtually guaranteed.

You could knock someone up. My husband gained weight along with me for both babies. :)

Eat a couple servings of brown rice with every meal, try to eat lots of burgers, steaks, chicken, Tuna on good bread. Drink a big glass of milk between meals, try to be eating something good every 2 or 3 hours. Drink lots of water. I used to be really skinny, due to a bad diet and fast metabolism. I've been busting my butt to put on weight. I'm 5'10" and in highschool I weighed about 100 pounds! I'm up to 160 right now, trying for 170-180. Working out is also very important, but the diet has always been the hardest part for me, I like working out. Creatine and protein drinks can help, but if you have a bad diet and poor excersize habbits it's not going to do it all for you.

Good luck! :)

Edit: I bought a bowflex which has helped me immensely. If you have the cash and the drive to workout in your home by yourself, its worth the hefty price tag.
