14. No it isn't WRONG, city folks!

I live on a farm, and that is a normal way to examine the calf in pregnancies where an abnormal presentation is a possibility. It does absolutely no harm to the cow whatsoever. Using that method will tell the examiner whether the calf is presented correctly for a normal birth, and if not, whether any corrective action needs be taken during labor.

The procedure is performed using a long sterile glove, which is very well lubricated with obstetrical gel.

The procedure saves the lives of countless thousands of cows and calves every year. By knowing the presentation, the assistant can then be ready in advance to properly assist the birth if necessary.

This little example is why PETA gets the vast majority of its supporters from the cities, from people who are totally disconnected from the real-life aspects of animal husbandry.

I am not saying that all farming is blameless when it comes to animal abuse.

I am saying it behooves you to question stuff in order to make sure it is factually correct.
