Is wearing fur fashionable again?
I've seen more commercials advertising fur coats lately.

My question: WHY is wearing fur fashionable again? It's just...obscene. There are coats out now...faux fur...that's just as warm and comfortable as slaughtering some animals (to the point of extinction) just so some rich Republican woman can flaunt her money.

4. No, don't slink away.
I had the television on and just now, there was an ad for Andriana Furs, a store here in Chicago. It was a "WTF" moment.

3. I hate when people wear fur
I know, I might be a hypocrit cause I eat meat, chicken, etc. but you need food to live.

One won't die b/c they can't wear their fur coat.

7. You also don't need
meat, chicken, etc. to live. I haven't eaten any of that for a couple of years and amazingly, I'm still alive.

Terry, do you wear leather? What's the difference?

17. Yes, I know.
There's hypocrisy involved. I don't wear leather. But I do eat meat and chicken.

Is it right, though, to hunt and kill animals...and again, some of these animals (such as leopards) are endangered species...to create coats? For wealthy people?

5. Well, fake fur is, yes
Fake fur is very fashionable.

But I don't wear any of it, because I look terrible in it. I'm too small.

My SiL wears a leather coat with fox trim. It looks hideous, but it's what she likes.

6. I find it vulgar.
But I see it as a choice someone has a right to make. I just don't have any desire to wear a dead animal around. I roll my eyes at the people wearing the coats. Besides, Cashmere is so much more attractive:7.

12. It's quite popular here in Philly.
There has been a big fur craze at Eagles games the past two seasons, mostly egged on by a popular sports radio host. Personally, I'm indifferent.

13. I like fur coats, personally.
I also like faux fur coats. But I really wonder if there is something inherently worse about wearing fur than wearing leather, which I surely DO wear and will continue to wear.

It's inevitable that the "fur look" come back into style. It is perceived by many as elegant and sophisticated. It is in tune with current fashion trends, actually.

15. I bought my wife a faux-fir throw this Christmas...
It's warm, comfortable, and she loves it.

As far as the "real vs fake" business, as long as they're farmed and treated relatively humanely, I don't have a real problem with it. It's little different than any other kind of animal farming. The thanksgiving turkey was just as alive once upon a time.

As far as the WHY is concerned, maybe your impression is mistaken. Stores typically advertise when they DON'T have as many sales as they like. I suspect what's happening is that population growth in the far north is creating more businesses which supply these products (farming much else is hard in Alaska and northern Canada), so a lot more of it is coming on to the market at a discount.

16. I sure hope not
I've always loved all kinds of animals and furry things, including fur pelts, stoles and coats. When I was a kid I didn't really make the connection that one of those cute, furry animals I loved so much would have to die in order for me to have the pelt. Any time I had the opportunity to pet a fur coat in a store, that's where you'd find me. And I even had a little rabbit fur pelt on my dresser.

But of course, now I'm fully aware of the connection, and I'm firmly against wearing fur. I've given up meat (most meat....still trying to transition away from fish) and have newfound respect for all animals. I do hate to see people wear fur. I know it's their right and I can certainly understand their attraction to it, as I love that furriness as much as they do.

Now I prefer to appreciate furriness in live animals. I have pet rabbits and every time I think of someone wearing fur, I think of how many of them it takes to create one coat. Even if it just took one, it would be too many.

Side note - I just received a beautiful faux fur throw blanket for xmas and I can't get over how nice it is...it is so much like real fur. And when I snuggle up in it, I don't have to feel guilty at all. (except for the underpaid workers in Asia who probably made it.....)

If it's fur, it's faux fur.

And no exotic skin (ostrich, lizard, crocodile, alligator) handbags, either. Only leather, or the faux crocodile/ostrich/lizard.

19. I don't have a problem with leather, at least the rest of the animal
was also used for something. I do draw the line at fur. Sorry, but the majority of animals that are killed for their pelts are killed only for their pelts. The rest of the animal is pretty much wasted. Now I can understand killing an animal for food and sustenance, but killing an animal for vanity is just evil.

22. Minks are nasty critters..
and taste lousy. Almost all are farm raised and good only for coats and dog food filler.

Lessee, now, leather, shearling coats, footballs, and all sorts of other things once living creatures we have only a small conumdrum about. If we're going to kill the critter for some reason, like food, why not wear it, too.

Most definitely draw the line at baby seals, leopards, sables, beavers, foxes, and other animals, often endangered, that are cruelly clubbed or trapped only for their fur.

23. Fur is for dipshit asshats that lack the least bit of compassion.
Is it fashionable again? Apparantly, as it's being pushed so hard, and so many designers are using it again. Sadly, what's fashionable is also what's inherently wrong.

It's not a PETA thing, it's an "I have a heart" thing.

However, that doesn't mean you should be thrown off DU, or be removed or asked to leave any forum. We can disagree on a great many things (such as fur) and still work together on other things.

I'm sure that there are things about me that you'd think "he's a dipshit asshat" for.

27. Don't throw red paint on my faux shearling coat!
I love faux fur. Real fur, as you implied, seems ridiculous now that you don't actually have to kill an animal to wear their fur.

Though... I am hypocritical in that regard as I still eat meat and sometimes very secretly covet Uggs (where you do have to kill the sheep, I believe).

37. Wearing fur is WRONG because it encourages
the use of furs that come from endangered species.

Even if it is "farmed", once fur becomes acceptable then of course it becomes a race to get the most exotic, most rare pelt available.

I mean, who is going to want to wear a rabbit coat to the country club if one of the other wives has a Russian Lynx?

A pox on anyone who thinks fur is okay.
