Can someone thoroughly explain "EMO" to me?
It seems like dreary goth X 10. Is it as pretentious as it seems?

Someone please fill me in.

1. Emos aren't goths per se I am sorry I didnt elab on that
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 06:13 AM by JohnKleeb
Emo isn't a way of dress really, it's sort of like an attiude I guess you could say. It is as I said, short for emotional. They have emo music but I can't tell you what it is because I dont know what it is.

3. Here's A Good Site
http://www.fourfa.com/index.html

Seems to be a genre of punk that some kiddies dress up funny for.

8. From fourfa.com
"I put this up as a chance to laugh at some of the sillier stuff emokids do in order to not look like all the Green Day/Rancid and Strife/Hatebreed clones out there.

Some pointers about emo fashions (above simple, universal hardcore attire)

the Emo Romulan look - short, thick, greasy, dyed-black hair with bangs cut straight across the forehead, and cut high over the ears. Someone from Time In Malta recently described to me the San Diego Crimson Curse scene as "Spock Rock."

actually, any greasy dyed black hair. Bangs in front and spikes in back is very emo too.

horn-rim glasses, or at least thick black frames.

bald head, furry face (boys only). Goes especially well with horn-rims.

heavy slacks, often too tight and short.

thin, too-small polyester button-ups in dark colors, or threadbare children's size t-shirts with random slogans. Button the collar if you got one.

clunky black shoes

scarves

gas station jackets. This has diffused a lot over the years though, it's no longer exclusive to emo kids. Nowadays, you may want to select a nice corduroy denim jacket.

also classic outerwear but quickly diffusing to normality: the famous Blue Peacoat

barrettes on boys

make-up (male or female)

too-small cardigans and v-neck sweaters

argyle

anorexic thinness. Veganism helps here."

10. The "Fashion Advice" Is Meant as a Joke
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 06:04 AM by REP
Emo really seems to be about music, not the posing, but with anything, it's the posing that gets noticed.

On edit: *Everybody* seems to be wearing those awful tiny little glasses these days. Not a good look, people.

I'm only slightly more than twice your age! I'm not *that* ancient!

Well, okay, maybe I am. I remember some of the bands on that website from when they came out.

7. It Worked For Me!
I was surprised I'd heard of some of the bands mentioned, but apparently I was young during the birth of Emo. Never did the hand-lotion-in-the-hair thing, though.

First time I saw Emo Phillips, I was on shrooms... I thought it was the shrooms, but after seeing him a second time, I realized that he really WAS that weird. :D

18. like any genre there is GOOD emo and TERRIBLE emo
Unfortunately the terrible stuff seems to get most of the attention.

But...some of it is really good. Sunny Day Real Estate, Bright Eyes, Death Cab For Cutie...not my favorite genre, but some of it is definately worthwhile.

I take it completely on the weight of the music though, I guess there are emo highschool kids out there who dress a certain way or something, but they aren't a part of my world.

22. yep and im gonna add modestmouse, at the drive in, sparta,cursive....
desaparacidos, the ghost, the anniversary, pretty girls make graves, at the drive in, -all of which have emo influences, but aren't necessarily straight up emo. I actually love the music, it's good jam music, soothing, emotional, it's the horrible lyrics and vocalists of some bands and pop-culturization of the music that's given it a bad name.
