5. HIs middle name was Edgar
so go figure. Bartholomew just rolled off the tongue so easily after Edgar. Parents need to really think before they name their children. What sounds cute for a baby may not be so for an adult, and humans are, hopefully, adults longer than they are little kids.

8. Naming kids after grandparents or other relatives is done
in the Jewish community too, but they must be dead. Although more common in the US, Jews often don't name kids junior or II, III etc. The reason kids are often named after a dead relative is because the parents want to honor the dead relative and if they think the person was a good person (a mensch) then they hope the kid will be the same.

9. You know, Ive noticed that
There are few Jews that I know that are Juniors. I am named after with my first name, my mom's dad, who was alive at my birth but my middle name is after my dad's dad who was not.

28. My friend Zach's Catholic name is
Epidydimus. The monsignor couldn't even pronounce it when he went for communion at Lent this year, so he called him "Eppy."

12. "David" is my confirmation name
I wasn't sure you could use a non-saint name but I wanted to honor a departed childhood friend with that name. But maybe there was a saint name "David" then. That would've been around 1968 which I think was before the wholesale purge of saints.

29. Saint David, king of Scots
He was a mediaeval king up in Scotland. He endowed a loads of churches and was closely related to S. Margaret, Queen of Scots (son, or father something like that - working from memory) who was a very popular saint north of the border.

Not wishing to sound too geeky about the Saints, but I was at uni in Scotland, and as a server would sit in the same place in church each week facing stained glass windows which depicted the main Scottish Saints - it eventually sank in which is more than can be said for the sermons which were preached as I dozed off looking at the window.

32. There were concrete blocks
They were put up in the '60s to house those studying science subjects. We in the arts faculty avoided them (the blocks and the scientists) like the plague.

7. A bisseleh information on the Rainbow Family
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 08:38 AM by ikojo
They gather in a National Forest every July 4th to pray for peace. They are very much hippies.

http://www.welcomehome.org/rainbow.html

What is the Rainbow Family ?
Some say we're the largest non-organization of non-members in the world. We have no leaders, and no organization. To be honest, the Rainbow Family means different things to different people. I think it's safe to say we're into intentional community building, non-violence, and alternative lifestyles. We also believe that Peace and Love are a great thing, and there isn't enough of that in this world. Many of our traditions are based on Native American traditions, and we have a strong orientation to take care of the the Earth. We gather in the National Forests yearly to pray for peace on this planet.

10. My Hebrew name is
Aharon, or in english, Aaron. My real Hebrew name is Arl Avraham, after my great-grandfather Abraham, but my temple changed it because Arl is Yiddish, not Hebrew, and the Rabbi didn't like that.

My oldest son's Hebrew names are Yaakov, Dov, and Sholem Tevya. Yaakov after my grandfather Jack, Dov after a great aunt, and Sholem Tevya was after an absolutely wonderful next-door neighbor who died of cancer shortly before my oldest was born.

My youngest son's Hebrew name is Meir, which means enlightened in Hebrew. The M is also for my grandfather's grandfather, whose name was Moshe-Mordechai

Ziporah Leah. My parents were Holocaust survivors so there were a bounty of names to choose from. As it turned out, I was named for my mother's mother and father's sister while my twin sister, Libe Sorka was named for my father's mother and mother's sister.

20. I am Charles - pleased to meecha
I got confirmed later in life - a prerequisite to a catholic marriage.
All of my childhood friends attended parochial school, and this got taken care of for them (they were kept on track), so I was a laggard you might say.

I forgot what inspired me to select Charles, although it may have to do with a few of my ancestors with the same name.

37. You're welcome
Your inquiry is enabling me to make enough posts to make my way out of the 700 club.

BTW, I see that you are from Halifax. Back in 1991, I was feeling rather restless, so I got in the car and started driving. After two days of driving, I found myself in Halifax. Your city, and province, are very nice and beautiful; and the people were all very friendly to me.
I would also like to compliment you and your fellow citizens for being very accepting of bicyclists on the open road. Never once did anyone try and push me off the road as people do here where I live.

:hi:

38. Come back any time
Maritimers love to have visitors! It's always nice to hear that people like it.

There's a high-speed ferry between NS and Maine now as well.

Halifax is getting better for bicycles. They've since added cycle lanes in some of the downtown, so that it's not such a tight squeeze:)
