What kinds of things will you pay more for? |
|
I pay more for my dental care because I prefer using a particular dentist.
I pay more for a grilled cheese sandwich at a resturant where I like the staff
I pay more for postage at my local mail store to avoid lines at the post office

I will also pay more for certain brands at the grocery store because experience has proven them better.
I will pay more for well-made, well-fitting clothes I expect to keep for a while.

I don't like generic cigarettes. Come to think of it I don't like many cigarettes other than my brand: Marlboro Menthol Light. I'll drive to another store if a store is out of my brand rather than buy something different.

8. Usually has something to do with duration of use |
|
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 02:37 PM by supernova
If it's something I expect to keep a long time a use a lot; I'll pay more for it, rather than get the cheapie version.
That's true of dress clothes, suits and the like. If I buy a suit, I expect to be able to wear it for 5-10 years. The fabric and the stitching must be of good quality. And it must be fully-lined.
edit: I buy the best food I can. And I enjoy trying different things. Instead of going out for pizza once a week, I'd rather save my money and go to a really nice restaurant once every couple of months. I like the china, the linen, and the solicitous waitstaff. That's the one time I enjoy being fussed over and pampered.

9. The likeliness of me paying for the quality of something is directly |
|
proportional to the amount of time spent using it a day.
That and anything that needs to be either waterproof or warm I don't mind paying top dollar for - like my Columbia boots which kick fucking ass, haven't had wet socks since buying those things.

I spend a couple of hours most days in an ice skating rink, where my daughter trains.
My big splurge this year was an ankle-length, down-filled coat for $89 at Burlington Coat factory. Ahh...luxury!

28. I'm with you on the Coffee |
|
I drank some of that stuff that comes out of cans the other day at a friends. I had to severely chastise her. I can do Megdalglia Doro and Lavazza out of the can if I had to but I can still taste that "commercial" taste. I grind my own thank you very much. I like Cafe D'Arte, Torrefazione or fresh roasted from our local roaster in town. Call me a coffee snob...and I'd agree. I have no shame when it comes to the Java.

I will buy lingerie that's American made when ever I can. It is better quality that the mexican and asia made goods. Most of the lingerie we just ordered for Valentines day is made in Pa.
It's getting hard to buy sex toys that are made in America - can't complete with the Chinese made goods and the quality is not that different (generally the quality of sex toys is poor).

12. I also pay more for dental because my dentist doesn't join plans |
|
but she is worth it
I pay more for really good fish and meat at Central Market
I (have to) pay more for dressy shoes so they won't hurt my feet
I pay more to have a pedicure instead of just painting my toenails because I am addicted to having a pedicure (my pedicurist gives a full up to the knee massage and dips my feet in warm paraffin...heavenly)
I pay more for airline tickets for my husband to come home because he has to fly on short notice.
I pay more for oil changes etc on my car so I won't void the warranty if the oil changer screws up.
I pay more for cat food so my babies will stay healthy longer.
I pay more for electricity in the summer because I keep my house cold! You could hang meat in my house most any time of the year.

17. Shampoo and body lotions |
|
Those are my two indulgences. I have very long hair that tends to dry out and get incredibly frizzy if I don't use good shampoo and conditioner. And I like good body lotions - they make me feel pretty and sexy even though I generally wear jeans and work boots.

22. Shoes, beer, and anything I put on my face |
|
Gotta have the comfy shoes. Payless just doesn't cut it.
And I hate cheap makeup. The foundations typically have too much silica and most cheap shadows/lipsticks aren't pigmented enough to have staying power and blending control.

I only buy Porter-Cable tools because they last longer and work better than the cheap ones.
I'm not fond of Porter-Cable's router bits and sawblades, so I buy only Freud bits and blades.
I would make two exceptions: if I was to purchase a plate joiner, I'd get a Lamello. And my reciprocating saw is a Milwaukee--which is not a bad thing; they invented the reciprocating saw and make a very good one.
P-C doesn't make stationary tools, so I buy Powermatic.

I may look like shit some days, but I want to smell great. And, for me, the smell great stuff costs money. People don't like it? They have my permission to stay away from my great smelling body.
Oh, and VS underwear. All the other stuff falls apart.

Face care - I only buy Nu Skin products cos they make my face feel soft & smooth
Shoes & basic wardrobe staples - you get the wear out of them, and they hold up better
Haircut - because you really CAN tell a cheap cut
Manicure & pedicure - if your nails look bad, it doesn't do great things for your appearance
Wines, breads & cheeses

. . . good fountain pens, good art supplies, organic cat food. I'd be willing to have my taxes raised if it would "buy" us better quality government, too, though I'm not convinced that it would.

34. Starbucks coffee, healthy food & treats for my dog, |
|
fresh fruit in winter.
Otherwise I'm the queen of thrift, having learned long ago to squeeze a tight budget even tighter to fund my daughter's competitive figure-skating, a costly sport.
I get a vicarious thrill whenever someone compliments me on an outfit that came from the $5 clothing store, or better yet, the 99 cent store.
I'm thinking of writing a book called "The cheapskate's guide: How to live the good life on a shoestring budget."
(Okay, here's one hint. Did you know that Trader Joe's "two buck chuck" Charles Shaw wine fooled a bunch of taste-testers from a famous culinary institute in NY? They rated it higher than a fifty buck a bottle vintage. Cheers!)

I love Two Buck Chuck Cabernet. It's so reasonably priced, we've increased our household bottle consumption to two a week. I absolutely love TJ's. I've decreased our budget for take out by buying their frozen Mandarin Orange Chicken which is as good as or better than some of the Chinese food around here.
