Best reply I've heard to fundies who claim God speaks to them....
...they obviously believe in the Bible, and in the Bible, God sent an angel to speak to Mary. That's right, God would not speak directly to the mother of Jesus, but He decided to speak directly to some ordinary, unimportant fundie.

This was on Law and Order--SVU, believe it or not! And who says telelvision ain't ed-you-kay-shunal!

1. Anyone who thinks that
god is talking to them or that they can talk to him need to be fitted with a straight jacket and tossed in a rubber room.
There is no god-like the repuke believe in. And you certainly can't get an answer back if you talk to him!!!

3. Okay, wait a minute.
I "talk to God." It's called prayer. I am in full possession of all of my faculties, thank you.

4. Yeah, but does He talk back???
The point is that God does not directly talk or appear to people, even those high up, so why would he appear or talk to some nut in Kansas?

7. I'm only responding the part of his post that read
"...or that they can talk to him need to be fitted with a straight jacket and tossed in a rubber room."

I'm merely pointing out that "talking to God" is pretty common, even among the sane and rational.

However, I don't believe God called up Fred Phelps or showed up in his bedroom one day and said, "You know, Fred, I hate fags, and I want you to let the world know."

9. Well, I see your point--most people pray--it's the spiritual side of
human nature, and I don't think there's anything wrong or crazy about that. I didn't mean to reply and agree with the poster you were replying to.

But my original point is that God just doesn't show up and talk to people--it's in the Biblical interpretation of the nature of God that He wouldn't do it!

19. If you talk to yourself,
the tooth fairy or the little green men that live at the bottom of the garden, you get labeled schizoid or worse and likely get locked up. But if you don't tell anyone it's the tooth fairy or little green men and call it prayer, everyone talks about what a wonderful person you are.

To me, delusions are delusions.

2. The only person I know of who talked directly to God
was Moses (unless you count Adam before he and Eve lef the Garden), and Moses didn't look at God. Usually, angels are the messengers-including the angel who wrestled with Jacob, who thereafter was called Israel; and Jibreel (Gabriel) who brought the Qur'an to the Beloved Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

Anyone who feels they have been directed by God usually does what they are asked to do without judgement of others and without much fanfare.

...these fundies act as if they're in a chat room with Him!

5. Those fundys would say that since Mary was a woman
he wouldn't lower himself to speak directly with her, but since they are men...

and anyway, Mary wasn't nearly as important in the history of Christianity as GW is.

17. Best line I heard on this...
was in a repeat broadcast this week of a November 2004 radio interview with Gore Vidal:

"Apparently, Jesus talks to George W. Bush; I thought he always put him on hold."

Quick Takes, Chicago Suntimes:

When you talk to God, it's prayer. When God talks to you it's paranoid schizophrenia.

There is a dispute, since my sister swears God looks like William Shatner and my aunt says he looks like Clint Eastwood!

15. God speaks.
Only slightly in error. If She did speak to them directly, they wouldn't know it was Her.
