Why do we always have to emphasize the bad news in life? I think it's rather a nice reminder that the most important thing we have is the love of our families and friends. Which is what we need to sustain us when things like the tsunami or events like Iraq happen.

It's not like it's the New York Times - the guy is publicly wishing his little girl a happy birthday. Good for him.

When I worked for the daily paper, I wrote for a larger audience. Personal columns and editorials centered on larger events. Some of my favorite writings, however, were the ones I did the for the small, hometown papers I served. We were allowed a much more intimate relationship with our readers.
