His name was Scott Lowery, and he was my friend
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 09:36 PM by WilliamPitt
I just got off the telephone with Scott's mother. She is understandably distraught, but confirms this terrible news.

I met Scott here online way back in 2001. The way we met was typical of the man he was. I had been posting here for a few months, and Scott wrote to ask me a favor. He told me that he was just coming out from a long struggle with alcoholism and was getting his life together. He wanted to become a writer, or at least do some writing for the cause. He asked me to check the posts he made, to see if his writing was clear, and to see if I had any suggestions. He didn't need my help, but the sweetness and determination to better himself is emblematic of the man I knew.

I can think of few people who have had to walk a tougher road than Scott did. He had the bottle problem and beat it. He had injuries to his body and overcame them. The sensitivity in his soul made the world a bruising place for him, but he battled through it. When he joined the Dean campaign and became a valued member of that cause way back in the early days, he was so happy and proud and thrilled.

He was with us for the first DU Gathering in Philadelphia, and made it a hilarious experience. He was a valued employee of truthout for a time, responsible for the management of our fundraisers. Before that, he helped me do research for articles and wanted no payment other than his name as a credit; if you go look up my articles from 2003, you'll find his name there. When I came to his town on my book tour, he and his mother had me for dinner and treated me like a king...not because I was special, but because that is how they lived their lives, in kindness and warmth.

I am unable to express how wounding the news of his death was.

His name was Scott Lowery, and he was 37 years old. He stood up for Howard Dean. He was my friend and colleague. He has been one of the best DU ever had. His greatest desire was to expose the right-wing fundamentalist fake Christians for what they are. Today, he stands righteously before his God, and knows now what I could have told him yesterday - that he was a better man than I or anyone else. He has earned his rest, and your prayers, and your thoughts.

I wish we could all be together. I keep saying that, but I really need to see, and touch and hug and cry with my DU friends, especially those of us who were close to Kheph. We need to have regional memorials or something. Also, we should start a fund in his name and make sure his good work goes on.

as soon as I figured out this wasn't a sad sick joke I thought about you. I know you and kef were friends and I'm sorry for your loss. I had some really fun exchanges with kef in the Lounge. He made me laugh out loud on way more than one occasion. Made me cry too with the story of the things he was struggling with in life. He was an inspiration and a good guy to know even just in passing.

Big hugs to you and his friends and family.

He was one of Howard's best supporters on DU--the type of supporter any candidate would be proud to have. Furthermore his support for Dean, while strongly felt, was done in a gentlemanly way, he didn't resort to ripping the other candidates or demeaning their supporters to make his points. He was what was/is best of DU. My thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.

66. “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night”
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

--Dylan Thomas

No one has ever said it better and repeating it is the only offering I have for you Will and for Scott's family than for you to know that the moment I began reading your post, these are the only words that went racing through my mind.....

Peace.

74. May I add Mary Frye's "I Did Not Die"
Do not stand at my grave and weep:
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am a gentle autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry:
I am not there. I did not die.

237. And this from Leaves of Grass
I have said that the soul is not more than the body,
And I have said that the body is not more than the soul,
And nothing, not God, is greater to one than one`s self is,
And whoever walks a furlong without sympathy walks to his own
funeral drest in his shroud,
And I or you pocketless of a dime may purchase the pick of the earth,
And to glance with an eye or show a bean in its pod confounds the
learning of all times,
And there is no trade or employment but the young man following it
may become a hero,
And there is no object so soft but it makes a hub for the wheel`d universe,
And I say to any man or woman, Let your soul stand cool and composed
before a million universes.

And I say to mankind, Be not curious about God,
For I who am curious about each am not curious about God,
(No array of terms can say how much I am at peace about God and
about death.)

I hear and behold God in every object, yet understand God not in the least,
Nor do I understand who there can be more wonderful than myself.

Why should I wish to see God better than this day?
I see something of God each hour of the twenty-four, and each moment then,
In the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass,
I find letters from God dropt in the street, and every one is sign`d
by God`s name,
And I leave them where they are, for I know that wheresoe`er I go,
Others will punctually come for ever and ever.

And as to you Death, and you bitter hug of mortality, it is idle to
try to alarm me.

To his work without flinching the accoucheur comes,
I see the elder-hand pressing receiving supporting,
I recline by the sills of the exquisite flexible doors,
And mark the outlet, and mark the relief and escape.

And as to you Corpse I think you are good manure, but that does not
offend me,
I smell the white roses sweet-scented and growing,
I reach to the leafy lips, I reach to the polish`d breasts of melons.

And as to you Life I reckon you are the leavings of many deaths,
(No doubt I have died myself ten thousand times before.)

I hear you whispering there O stars of heaven,
O suns--O grass of graves--O perpetual transfers and promotions,
If you do not say any thing how can I say any thing?

Of the turbid pool that lies in the autumn forest,
Of the moon that descends the steeps of the soughing twilight,
Toss, sparkles of day and dusk--toss on the black stems that decay
in the muck,
Toss to the moaning gibberish of the dry limbs.

I ascend from the moon, I ascend from the night,
I perceive that the ghastly glimmer is noonday sunbeams reflected,
And debouch to the steady and central from the offspring great or small.

There is that in me--I do not know what it is--but I know it is in me.

Wrench`d and sweaty--calm and cool then my body becomes,
I sleep--I sleep long.

I do not know it--it is without name--it is a word unsaid,
It is not in any dictionary, utterance, symbol.

Something it swings on more than the earth I swing on,
To it the creation is the friend whose embracing awakes me.

Perhaps I might tell more. Outlines! I plead for my brothers and sisters.

Do you see O my brothers and sisters?
It is not chaos or death--it is form, union, plan--it is eternal
life--it is Happiness.

The past and present wilt--I have fill`d them, emptied them.
And proceed to fill my next fold of the future.

Listener up there! what have you to confide to me?
Look in my face while I snuff the sidle of evening,
(Talk honestly, no one else hears you, and I stay only a minute longer.)

Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)

I concentrate toward them that are nigh, I wait on the door-slab.

Who has done his day`s work? who will soonest be through with his supper?
Who wishes to walk with me?

Will you speak before I am gone? will you prove already too late?

The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me, he complains of my gab
and my loitering.

I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable,
I sound my barbaric yaws over the roofs of the world.

The last scud of day holds back for me,
It flings my likeness after the rest and true as any on the shadow`d wilds,
It coaxes me to the vapor and the dusk.

I depart as air, I shake my white locks at the runaway sun,
I effuse my flesh in eddies, and drift it in lacy jags.

I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,
If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.

You will hardly know who I am or what I mean,
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,
And filter and fibre your blood.

Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged,
Missing me one place search another,
I stop somewhere waiting for you.

75. A SAILOR'S PRAYER
A SAILOR'S PRAYER

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
Grant no other sailor take
My shoes and socks before I wake

Lord grant me in my slumber
And keep my hammock on it's number
May no clews or lashings break
And let me down before I wake

Keep me safely in thy sight
And grant no fire drill tonight
And in the morning let me wake
Breathing scents of sirloin steaks

God protect me in my dreams
And make this better than it seems
Grant that time may swiftly fly
When myself shall rest on high

In a snowy feather bed
Where I long to rest my head
Far away from all these scenes
From the smell of halfdone beans

Take me back into the land
Where they don't scrub down with sand
Where no demon typhoon blows'
Where women wash the clothes

God thou knowest all my woes
Feed me in my dying throes
Take me back I promise then
Never to leave home again

I will remember him for fighting against Homeland Security legislation, leading the lobbying of Byrd on DU.

I will remember him for posting news in LBN. 1000s and 1000s of posts.

I will remember how much he loved reading good sci-fi and all the discussions in the lounge.

I will remember those late night confessionals.

Thanks for the eulogy, Will. I am so saddened by this news.

When I first logged on to DU, it was him and you, Will, who made me think I might to be a part of this community. I had been at TOL - and thought I'd never find another cyber "home" when it went down. But then I read his posts - and yours- and say to myself "yeah, this must be the place."

85. beautiful.... (and a short poem)
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 10:49 PM by nostamj
I would never suggest that Scott and I were 'friends' - even by DU or internet standards. but, being here as long as I've been... of course I read many many posts.

I think you know how it is... certain names become trusted and are almost always worth reading.

I read of his struggles and successes. we even occasionally exchanged a post or two about sci-fi or comics or something.

given my own personal issues and struggles, his comments often resonated deeply with me...whether to frighten or challenge.

I was thrilled (and a bit jealous too) of the successes he had with the campaign and truthout.

and inspired too. make no mistake.

a very specific sorrow in the midst of such great, global sorrow.

and, I must say, I'm as moved by the responses on this and other thread as I am by this sad, sad news.

and, again, beautiful words WillPitt and thank you for them. when this was first posted I hoped that you would know and confirm or dispute this news.

We are shocked by the suddenness.
Can I boil today's rice
With more joy,
Respecting that it may be
The last bowl?
Most of us will not be warned
Before we are swept out
Of this life.

Will we hold to hope
And spit the bitter out?

That's the daily test.

Most of us will not be warned.
We should not be shocked by the suddenness.

Warning or challenge,
We should not be shocked.

86. Khephra was one of a kind...
He is probably the first DU member who stood out to me. I first lurked in February of 2001. Joined in October. I didn't have a home computer at the time and knew that if I joined at work too soon, I'd have a problem. So I resisted the urge for months and then checked only briefly.

But I bought a computer just three years ago this month. Never regretted it, and Kheph was one of the reasons why.

Just tried Andy Stephenson on his cell phone to talk with him about this. No answer, but he will be saddened as well.

I joined in September 2001 after lurking for awhile. I remember the first time he responded to a post of mine, as a newbie. I remember when he hit 10,000 posts, the first DUer to do so. His posts in LBN; he was always on top of the news. But, most of all, I remember how much his presenece here was such a big part of DU, from the beginning. DU truly will never be the same.

90. I'm at a loss for words
For some reason this song is running in my head. Not like it was something between us, just listening to it and thinking of Scott

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It’s a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they’re better left unsung.
I don’t know, don’t really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

But if you fall you fall alone,
If you should stand then who’s to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.

La dee da da da, la da da da da, da da da, da da, da da da da da
La da da da, la da da, da da, la da da da, la da, da da.

Scott and I were organizers for Hoosiers for Dean, and Scott put in an Herculean effort to make Dr Dean feel welcome when he was the guest speaker for the May 2003 Jefferson Jackson Dinner.

Scott was about bursting at the seams with well-earned pride at the end of that evening.

I didn't know him well but always enjoyed his discussions here. He seemed like a good guy and very committed to the cause. IIRC I think he moderated LBN on Sep. 11 2001. Does anyone know how he died?

Rest in peace Scott aka Kephra

134. a few quotes for Kephra and his grieving DU friends
I count myself as well. Rest in peace my friend.

Henri Nouwen:

When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a gentle and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.

Algernon Black:

The love that once was born can not die
For it has become part of us, of our life,
Woven into the very texture of our being.
Each of us would wish to leave some part of ourselves,
So here and now we bear witness to the one we knew in life,
Who now in death bequeaths a subtle part, precious and beloved,
Which will be with us in truth and beauty,
In dignity and courage and love
To the end of our days.

Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 11:40 PM by LeftPeopleFinishFirs
Scott (or as I knew him, Kef) gave everything to this message board. It's unbelievable that he is gone. As I type this, I am shaking and crying over somebody I didn't even know on a personal level.

You have to wonder how many people were touched by Kef in his years here on DU. When I first came here in 2001, he welcomed me. He's PMd me about random things in the past. And although we never conversed outside of DU, he always amazed me with his intelligence and keen sense of the world. There are people who will devote 110% of themself to a cause. Kef was one of those people. He worked tirelessly in LBN everyday to expose the Bush junta, and worked for us too.

Thank you Kef, we will certainly miss you. I am sorry that I never knew you better, and nothing can change that - but know that you have impacted my life in a positive way.

Peace be the journey! <3

Maggie

kef was one of the good guys. During that horrible time on DU (primaries) he was the one Dean supporter I always respected (and never once put on ignore). He was one of the old-timers here. I remember when I first came to DU (way back in 2001- before even you Will) and Kef was an institution, even then.

Kef will be missed.

Stunned.
Just this morning, I had noticed how Keph had been bringing us much more lbn news these days - and as I had that random thought (looking at the lbn forum) - I had a very warm memory of an afternoon spent with Scott and a few other hoosier Duers. When I first started posting in DU - in the early days of 2002 - there were only a few people regularly (and quickly) posting the news as it broke. One was Keph. As I was doing heavy writing gigs at the time, I justified quick news fixes as part of the thinking process... and I, following my fellow Hoosier's lead, started bringing news to the forum. My first interactions with Keph were when I would post a news item (back when the forum's didn't move too fast) that he saw was going to sink - that he thought was important. He would send me a note and tell me where he would move the item (e.g., to the economics forum) where it might be read longer by folks who were interested in the general topic. Those initial interchanges led to a mutual respect and understanding about our proclivities towards following stories and desiring true discussion about the significance of those stories. When I finally got to meet him - it was a true pleasure.

We didn't talk that frequently "off-line..." But we did have several conversations - through which I became aware of many of the personal obstacles and challenges (health and other) that he stood down and faced off. His strength and his passions always shined through.

Scott, you are already and will remained missed. Peace be with you - you deserve to be embraced in peace and love. I will always be glad that we shared time together - and everytime I see my login name, I will try to think of you and honor you... as you shared with me the first time that we spoke that my login could fit you as well as I (it is my first, middle and last initial - followed by my homestate.... and it is also his first, middle and last initial - followed by his homestate.

Peace be with you Scott.

133. A poem for a brave DUer.
By the by, by the moon they passed on a stone road going nowhere.
Into light steps a mood, a shadow broken by a moonbeam.

Keep peace inside and never forget that we shared a moment.
May life be kind. All thats left are remnants of each other.

To the moon men have sailed thier great ships spiral through the darkness.
Whispered lines left behind "see you on the backside of tomorrow".

Keep peace inside and never forget that we shared a moment.
May life be kind. The twists and turns will all bring us together.

Lines are drawn, a face is formed, searching for a clue within the body.
Identify with the norm and lose your true self in the masses.

Keep peace inside and never forget that we shared a moment.
May life be kind. Faraway a fading fleeting moment.

141. A DU "hero" has fallen...
Thank you Will, for the heartfelt posting. To you Will and all of you who were closest to Scott--my thoughts and prayers are with you. I was fortunate to meet Khephra along with Will, Matcom, Lynne and so many others that first anti-Iraq war rally in DC. Kheph was welcoming, friendly, and drew you in to where you wanted to be around him. It felt good to be with him--to talk with him--he made me smile--and I didn't even know the guy. I'd always hoped to see him again--perhaps at a Funday in Saginaw. This is so sad..

For all the knowledge he spread in his LBN posts I was so greatful. Mostly I've always lurked on DU--rarely having time to follow threads or to respond to things as far as I'd like. Kheph kept us informed as much as anyone else here This news of his passing really hurts ... and my prayers are with his mother and all of you who were so close to him... I'm just so sorry.

Will I am so sad and heartbroken over this. Scott was a big B5 fan and that's how I got to know him here. His posts were extensive, his passion for knowledge immense. I always read his posts in LBN. I will miss him dearly. Will you take your time and grieve too. We all need to.

This one is for Scott/Khephra because he would have wanted us to on on fighting.

"It was the end of the Earth year 2260, and the war had paused, suddenly and unexpectedly.
All around us, it was as if the universe were holding its breath . . . waiting.
All of life can be broken down into moments of transition or moments of revelation. This had the feeling of both.
G'Quon wrote, There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way.
The war we fight is not against powers and principalities – it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender.
The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation.
No one knows the shape of that future, or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain."
-------------------

Find your way into the next plane, dear Scott and may you find happiness and peace.

Love to you my DU brother
Sonia

"The journey doesn't end here. There's another path, one that we all must take. The gray rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and it will change to silver glass, and then you see White shores and beyond them, a far green country under a swift sunrise.''

I remember him from the early days of DU. He laughed at how people thought he was a woman, judging from his insightful and sensitive posts. Kephra's posts were strong, anchoring fibers in the tapestry of DU. It is hard to know just how much poorer we will be to no longer have them each day.

We are such a family here. Births, deaths, marraiges, divorces, illnesses, healing, failure and success. We share it all amongst us.

Kephra's last post to me is his passing. That is the message he left. To me, at least.

The grieving process is long, but I hope that you & all of those who mourn his passing will be filled with memories of the good times with Scott.

I'm so sad for his family's loss and this is a big loss in the fight here on DU....If all DUers could have been so dedicated and with passion and love for his country...

How did he die? Is there any more information?

Maybe he died of a broken heart....there are so many of those around here these days...

171. Will, what a lovely tribute
This has come as a terrible shock to all of us who are used to seeing Khephra on DU, whether we knew him, personally, or not. But your kind and affectionate words did the man proud. I was aware of your history with him on DU and with Truthout, and know how tough this is for you, as well. Thank you for letting us know about this. My thoughts are with him, his incomparable mom, and you, as well.
:grouphug:

Godspeed, Khephra! We will miss you. DU, and the world that you monitored for us, will never be the same.;(

194. Words of Robert Service
There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't stay still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and they rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain's crest;
Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.

If they just went straight they might go far;
They are strong and brave and true;
But they're always tired of the things that are,
And they want the strange and new.
They say: "Could I find my proper groove,
What a deep mark I would make!"
So they chop and change, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.

And each forgets, as he strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.
And each forgets that his youth has fled,
Forgets that his prime is past,
Till he stands one day, with a hope that's dead,
In the glare of the truth at last.
Robert Service

Neither Magistrate nor I were on the forum last night, and he's just left for the day and won't be back till late this evening. I'm sure he'll post a tribute but on his behalf I would like Scott's mother to know how highly we regarded her son.

Khephra's ID was one of the few I sought out: if he posted it and I saw it, I read it, because it was bound to be informative and insightful. He fought on the right side of the right fight. And he had excellent taste.

I am deeply, deeply saddened. That's about all I can say.

Rest in peace, dear Kephra. I will miss you.

210. I remember one moment all too well
Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 10:52 AM by Spiffarino
Khephra posted an LBN thread a few months back. I was new to the place and didn't understand the rules well. He posted snippets from an article and, instead of following the link like I should have, I went off about the post being misleading like I thought I was Captain Truth or something.

Long-time DUers jumped all over me. I was scorched. What was Scott's reaction? He said he was just following the rules about not going over 4 paragraphs. He didn't flame me. He didn't get bent out of shape. He simply let a st00pid n00b know how it works around here. I sent an apology via email. I hope he got it.

I didn't know Scott personally, but it was plain to see that he was a sensitive, caring soul. My heart goes out to his mother, his family, and his friends. They must be devastated.

Khephra, thanks for teaching me. The one time we met online, you had every right to be a jerk, but instead you were kind. I'll always remember you fondly. When you see God, ask him if he wouldn't mind sending a few more just like you.

Rest well, Scott.

215. A tribute to Scott Lowery - To Those I Love
To Those I Love

If I should ever leave you whom I love
To go along the Silent Way, grieve not,
Nor speak of me with tears, but laugh and talk
Of me as if I were beside you there.

I'd come, I'd come, could I but find a way!
But would not tears and grief be barriers?

And when you hear a song or see a bird
I loved, please do not let the thought of me
Be sad...For I am loving you just as
I always have.....

You were so good to me!
There are so many things
I wanted still
To do, so many things to say to you....

Remember that I did not fear....It was
Just leaving you that was so hard to face...

We cannot see Beyond...
But this I know:
I loved you so, twas heaven here with you!

- Isla Paschal Richardson

A true good person, gone much too soon.

235. Scott was my Brother
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 04:01 AM by Hodapp

I am a stranger to your website. I disagree politically with probably 99% of the people here. But the one thing we agree on is our love of Scott. You see, Scott was my Brother.

Scott became a Freemason in 2003 and joined my Masonic Lodge. I exchanged e-mails with him before he joined, and I had the honor and pleasure of presiding over some of his degree work. Freemasons are non-sectarian in our membership requirements, and the one thing Scott enjoyed was that this big, disparate group of men, who might otherwise have been kept at a perpetual distance by their religious and political beliefs, could come together every week and just enjoy each other's company.

We discussed many things over the months - he enjoyed science fiction, and he loved to discuss philosophical and spiritual topics with Brothers (and my wife), because there was no threat, no argument. It was the calm give and take of discourse among friends who, when the evening was over, happily hugged each other and went our ways.

I remember when his basement flooded, and he called as the water was rising, hunting a pump, but still laughing about it. I remember, too, when it was clear that the Dean campaign was finished, and he called, almost in tears. It was late, and he knew I was a Bush supporter. But he was so crushed and so exhausted and so hurt that we talked into the early morning. He felt so passionately about it - it was the first campaign he had ever worked for - and he had never experienced that kind of defeat before. He was a dedicated man to have by your side.

As a brother Mason, Scott and I pledged to help each other. And so the last thing I can do for him is to stand beside him in death and perform the final services for him that our fraternity offers. I will be honored to stand with the members of his Lodge - his brethren - and discharge our final ceremony and duty on Saturday.

There is a very old ceremony for what Masons call a Lodge of Sorrows, from the mid-1800's. The ritual is no longer used in this form today. But the old words say so much about Scott:

Man judgeth not of man. He whose infinite and tender mercy passeth all comprehension, whose goodness endureth forever, has called our brother hence. Let Him judge.

In ancient Egypt no one could gain admittance to the sacred asylum of the tomb until he had passed under the most solemn judgment before a grave tribunal.

Princes and Peasants came there to be judged, escorted only by their virtues and their vices. A public accuser recounted the history of their lives, and threw the penetrating light of truth on all their actions. If it were adjudged that the dead man had led an evil life, his memory was condemned in the memory of the nation, and his body was denied the honors of the sepulcher. But Freemasonry has no such tribunal to sit in judgment upon her dead; with her, the good that her sons have done lives after them, and any evil is interred with their bones...

The good Scott has done shall indeed live after him, in the hearts of his friends, and in his words that remain. And we are all better people for knowing him, you and I, for being touched by him.
