Poll question: Who's your favorite Old School Rapper or Rap group?
And a little trivia question to go with the poll.

What was the first "rap" song to make it to #1 on the Billboard charts?

...put Public Enemy on here, but didn't because I didn't think they were "Old School".

...RADIO was the first rap album I ever owned. And it's still one of my faves!

And I know I can't live without my radio! :headbang:

15. LL Cool J is way old school!
Remember "Rock the Bells", "Dear Evette", and "My Radio"? Those were way old school. Public Enemy could possibly have been added, but they were very un "old school", much like N.W.A. IMHO

16. I guess they came out about the same time......
Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 03:43 AM by ChairOne
But I think of PE as way more "old school", at least in style, than NWA... Prolly because of the NY/LA thing....

As for LL, I don't really count him as much until BAD... But I suppose I can't expect everyone else to go along with that... :)

BDP shoulda still shoulda been on the list tho.... imo...

EDIT: My vote was for Run DMC in any case - I can't in good conscience vote against "talking is the one thing that you can do best; you told the cavity creeps to watch out for crest" - LOL

D.J. spinning, I said, my, my.
Flash is fast, flash is cool.
Francois, c’est pas flashe non due

There's a LOT that are older than Sugar Hill Gang. Sugar Hill Gang stole half their lyris from the Cold Crush Crew. Sugar Hill Gang was record company invention along the lines of one of todays boy bands. They looked for a bunch of people that they could toss together and make money with.

Doesn't make their songs any less memorable, but it's worth noting.

19. Jimmy Spicer aka Super Rhymes :)
And while I rocked the mike, this is what I said
About Dracula, the living dead

He didn't like blood, not this vampire
The disco beat was his desire
Transylvania's where he made home
Until one day he decided to roam
And then out of the crib he did crawl
Count Dracula is what he's called
He said, "The sun's gone down, and now it's night
I'm goin to spread my wings and take a serious flight
I turned into a bat, I flew away
I said at the disco is where I gotta stay
Because back home, there was nothing like this
In Transylvania this is what I'd miss
They just bite necks and suck blood all day
But I know there had to be a better way
I parked my car, said, "Vampires, I am leaving"
So I turned into a bat and cut out that evening
The first disco I hit was 54
They didn't even want to let me in the door
I said, "Listen, my man, I am a real cool guy
I can turn into a bat, I can even fly"
He said, "Dracula, you can do all of that
Then come on in and catch a neat freak attack"
So I went inside and I started to dance
And had all the ladies waitin for their chance
They said, "Isn't he cool with his widow's peak"
And the strange way he does the Freak
He said, "Where I come from it's not called the 'Freak'
It's the Transylvanian Boogie, seven days a week"
I didn't get to dance with them all that night
Cause at the break of dawn I saw sunlight
I said, "I'm sorry to say I cannot stay"
Cause us vampires must be in before it turns day
But don't forget, I'll be back
I like it when I catch a neat freak attack
And since you heard my story, it's time I be leaving
In Transylvania we say "good evening"

22. I picked Doug E. Fresh BUT.....
I really loved Slick Rick!! he was hysterical. doug E. Fresh did The Show with Slick Rick so he gets the vote.

But La Di Da Di, always cracked me up.

Slick rick was a story teller. think he is jail now has been for a long time. lyrics to la di da di...http://www.lyricsondemand.com/s/slickricklyrics/ladidadilyrics.html

i saw Snoop Dog do La Di Da Di at la la palloza in NY and the kids were really unreceptive. pissed me off. all they wanted to hear was the rock. open your mind. i am a rocker but can appreciate all kinds of music except country.

of course Run DMC is the king of it all. and i give them all respect. especially since we lost Jam master Jay last year.

and I LOVED the Beastie Boys!! I can remember dancing and screaming "you gotta fight for your right to party!!" back in the day!

25. I voted for Flash...
I'm not a huge fan of Rap.... but every so often, I find myself listening to the stuff produced from the eighties such as Flash, Run DMC, etc. etc... and I find it to be quite good, quite talented.. much more than I'm finding it now a days, just an opinion of course.

You other brothers can't deny
When a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face you get sprung ...

Baby got back!

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!
