"Man in Black" a tribute to our beloved Kef.....
When Johnny Cash died, I remember Kef posted the lyrics to this song, and said that although he wasn't a country music fan (neither am I) he could dig the message.
I know Kef was our own "Man In Black". I now post these lyrics in memory of Scott:

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believin' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believin' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

I'm wearing black today....I love you Kef..

1. I have always been moved by the lyrics to that song.
It seems a fitting tribute to somebody I know only by reputation and the testimonials of his many friends on DU.

4. I just changed to a black shirt...
There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

Miss you already, Kef!!!

I lurked here at DU almost from day one...but I never registered until 2002. Kef pulled me out of the woodwork because he was just so cool.

20. that is what drew me to him when I first started posting..
his general aesthetic, the black clothes and music taste and attraction for things dark. quite similar to me. that and being at a more advanced age to still be having these tastes. the next marilyn manson show I attend will be in tribute to him. I would have loved to have met him in person especially after seeing his face in the pictures (don't ask me why that is, can't explain it)OH well. :(

15. i remember that day
the day Johnny Cash died and Kef's post.
I can't seem to stop crying.

Kef's passing has left a void,
it'll remain,
He was one of a kind and cannot be replaced.
The world is sadder, darker place without his presence.

19. Keph (Scott) had a lot of the "poet" inside him. I think some are Poets
Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 07:00 PM by KoKo01
who read poetry or songs and love the lyrics....but they can't get it all together.

But...their lives create a poetry for many of us to write about. That's what I think...when I think of Keph and his contributions to DU. And his soul will sing somewhere...because what was locked up in there...just didn't fit in the world of Bush...or the world of what we are facing.

Yet...Keph could keep the rest of us very emotional folks who "pop off" like ME grounded...he understood. And that he was so young and could do this said he was someone who was "sent" to give us an example of how we all could live...even when our sensitivities are laughed at and hard to live with. Keph is so enmeshed with my early 2001 DU Experience it's hard to separate it all. He wasn't a "Saint" and would have gotten angry if you even said he was better than many of us...but I think he was...in the way that folks who've suffered and pulled themselves out of "misfortune" can be....they give one the strength to pull their ownselves out of misfortune and bad luck in the "draw" of the cards of life.

He had a great sense of humor and wasn't above having the "foibles" that many of us do. But, what he did for the Democratic Movement after the Selection 2000 was IMPORTANT... It's not quantifiable...but those of us who were here way back, know what it did for our spirts..and souls.
