What are you quite good at? |
|
I am good at watching endless movies, speed reading, and poker. What are you good at? I think its important to celebrate one's strengths every once in a while. Its too easy for me to just think about my weaknesses all the time.

English is my second. I can read Portuguese, learned enough Russian to be able to guess the meaning of a good fraction of written text. The rest is just a little smattering of French, Italian and some Nahuatl.
Here's a little Tex-Mex story for you, in honor of our shared languages:
Once upon a time, a little mariposita was flying from flor to flor when all of a sudden, se cayo! A jijo! se dijo. What stupid I am! I forgot to open my alitas!

I would love to learn Nahuatl, and would love even more to learn Mixteco...unfortunately I'm realizing how varied Mixteco is from region to region, so I've about given up on that idea. We do have a lot of immigrants where I live who speak Mixteco as their first language and speak little if any Spanish.

55. Yes, that comes as a shock to many people in the US |
|
That so many Mexicans don't speak Spanish. I read an article last year where the Mexican government is testing bilingual education methods to educate people in remote areas that do not know Spanish.
People here in the US are also shocked when I tell them they already know a little bit of Nahuatl and don't even realize it:
Coyote - Coyotl Peyote - peyotl Avocado - ahuacatl Tomato - tomatl Banana - anana Cocoa - cacao Chocolate - chocolatl
I'm just crazy about words and their origins!
One language is just not enough. I feel bad sometimes because some of my favorite poetry and songs is in Spanish and I can't share the emotional impact that they have. I try to translate them but It's hard and oftentimes some of the emotional punch is lost. If I try to explain it then they get it, intellectually, but they don't feel it. It makes me so sad because there's a part of my psyche that I cannot share with my English speaking friends.

|
Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 10:32 PM by Cheswick2.0
actually the singing is joy and the intuition is painful. I feel everything people near me are feeling. It is really more than intuition, it is like being a lightning rod.
But the singing part is the expression of joy, even in a sad song. I am so lucky to love singing since I was given a voice people like to listen to. I am very very grateful to be able to do it and very grateful that people listen. Though I am perfectly happening singing alone too.

|
I was props mistress for a 100-person Gilbert & Sullivan opera group for 12 years.
You need it and I can buy it, rent it or make it for cheap.
I am the Props Queen.
A jester's stick, 35 fairy wands, 40 shields, medievel weaponry, telescopes, cannons, chopping blocks (for decapitation), 30 walking sticks, authentic-looking wooden buckets, inexpensive fake rifles and pistols, 30 fake instruments (flutes, lyres, panpires) you name it, I'll get/make it for you. PVC and luan are my friends.
Believe me, this is the #1 most useless skill a person can develop.
