OK, now Morrissey is officially totally uncool. |
|
After years of avoiding his particular brand of mope-rock, I find that I am quite taken with his latest CD, You Are the Quarry. He seems to have developed an incredible sense of melody, and a sense of humor, to go with his cynical, sad-sack music.
Note to Morrissey fans: due to my track record, the fact that I like this one means that his career is over. Sorry.

3. He was cool with a certain type of person. |
|
Back about 500 years ago, when I was in high school, anyone wearing black was heavily into The Smiths. I found him a little too self-important then.
But this new CD... wow.

5. I've been meaning to check it out in spite of myself... |
|
But after hearing some of his work with the Smiths, coupled with the fact that I hate indie music, I don't have very high hopes.. off to amazon I go to check out some samples.

15. OK. here's Opie's not-so-humble review... |
|
All in all, not too bad. Sounds like he hired a good producer, who has good knowledge of song-structure. Some really nice arrangements and decent songwriting. In spots, it reminded me of Poe, and other parts definitely sounded like he spent a lot of time listening to old Squeeze discs. Definitely more palatable than his older stuff, but nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking. The kind of disc I might be tempted to buy, and would probably use it to wind down on the drive home from band practice. I'll give it 7 Opie Stars.

It's a great album, ain't it. Best since Your Arsenal. My favorite is "I'm Not Sorry."

I also love "America is Not the World", "I Have Forgiven Jesus", and "First of the Gang to Die".
On edit: Wow. Just heard "The World is Full of Crashing Bores." This CD is incredible.

Moz sounds like he's finally getting some sugar.

7. What other bands do you like? |

Depending on what you say, I'll either start hating Morrissey, or you. ;)

Jessica Simpson. Finn made the other mods promise not to tell, but that was over a term ago. I guess it doesn't matter anymore.
Try to keep your respect for him, okay?

It's true. The Simpson sisters are my obsession. I hate Ashlee's band for messing her up on SNL.
I also have this mild thing for Neil Finn (formerly of Split Enz and Crowded House), hence my user name.
Also Rufus Wainwright, Ben Folds, Maria McKee, Nellie McKay, and almost any Brit-pop.

14. He's never been cool! That's why I love him, anyway. |
|
He just does what he wants. Which is sort of cool. But in an uncool way.

When I was in high school Morrissey & Robert Smith were THE dudes! I knew many, many girls who spent hours and hours wishing they could hook up with either one of them!
I got an iPod for Christmas & I've been loading it up with stuff from The Smiths, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, XTC, Squeeze, Siouxsie & The Banshees.... LoL- it's all good.
And, I admit it..... I like Ashlee Simpson too. Shhh! Don't bag on me! She's good. But I don't like Jessica's music very much. I like the show though.
My basic music philosophy is..... A.B.C
Anything But Country
:smoke: Currently listening to the Foo Fighters.
