High School Student Surprised To Be Called For Jury Duty

BOISE, Idaho -- Eagle High School senior Nick Baker has a great excuse for skipping class.

The 18-year-old got a jury summons from the 4th District Court in Boise.

Fourth District Trial Court Administrator Larry Reiner said it's uncommon for a high school student to be picked for jury duty. But there's no automatic exemptions for high school students over 18.

Meridian School District spokesman Eric Exline said jury duty is considered an excused absence. But he said if Baker doesn't have to report for duty -- or he's let go after a couple hours -- he'd better be in school.

Baker said he wonders why they would want him on a jury. He questioned why the state would pull people out of school to appear on a jury.

I didn't get called for jury duty until I was a freshman in college.

Oh yeah, I had just turned 18 a few months earlier.

She is not a United States citizen, and her English isn't good enough to handle a trial.

They summoned me from my home address (I was registered to vote at home and at uni), it was the middle of my exam time and they let me off.

I wouldn't mind doing it, but couldn't quite manage bi-location over 500 miles.

5. I was summoned, and served.

I was a deputy at the time, but the case for which I was chosen was a civil one. I received my normal salary, in return for which I had to endorse my juror's fee check over to the County.
