The return of the 70s hair-helmet / Kennedy hair
We were looking at a car accident last night. Watching the jaws of life come out, etc. I saw part of it and was waiting for the police to take a report. This teenager comes over while I'm saying the cops at my local precinct are reasonably cool. He says 'no, did you see how they dragged people off by the hundreds to Pier 57?' (this was during the Rethuglican convention. Great to hear that kids understand how wrong that situation was btw). So we hash that out a little but I'm looking at his hair. It is so 1974 -- like this:
or perhaps it is this:

And I have seen that on lots of rich kids in the neighborhood. Meanwhile in California, my ever trend-conscious nephew is trying to get permission to grow his hair out. He's 13 and in a band that plays (get this) Van Halen, AC/DC and Ozzy. WTF is going on?

Is this the same 1970s trend that happened back in ~1990 or another one? It seems to be less hippie and more Kennedy. If it comes with the politics, bring it on!

1. yeah, the 70s haircut is 'hip' right now
Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 01:56 PM by eleonora
I personally hate it, but hey, I guess that being 28 makes me old now.

edit: I jut hope we never go back to the 80s style of dress and neon pinks and yellow spandex...oh wait, we just might.

But I will say I'm "over" the striped oxfords. I can't escape them.

4. I think it may be coming back a little
Longer hair on guys seemed to be getting popular again during my first year of college (three years ago or so) but I thought it had died down again. Fairly recently, though, I've been seeing it again... often on kids, especially teenagers, high school age and the like.

I'm a big fan of long hair myself ('cause I like the politics of hippies and a lot of seventies music; was the only long-haired guy in my graduating class) and after shaving my head in the summer I'm working on growing mine out again. It looks pretty similar to the style you're referencing, not because I've gotten it cut that way but just because it's grown in that way. I'm currently trying to decide whether to get the sides and back cleaned up and just grow out the top or whether to just let it all keep growing and look hippie-ish. I'm leaning towards the latter but I'm hoping to get a job soon, which may cause me to make a different decision!

18. Totally OT - what's the origin of your screenname, Johnny Ringo
Is it an OK Corral thing, or something else?

Just spent some time in Tombstone, and met this guy who was running for mayor. His opponent hung out at "Johnny Ringos", which we wanted to check out, but we didn't make it there.

Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 04:56 PM by JohnnyRingo
...when I was a kid, cowboy shows were the staple of the impressionable young American boy.
http://www.johnnyringo.net/

In the 70's I (d)evolved into a long hair hippie biker, fond of Harleys and Colt single action revolvers.
A desparado in my own mind, at least. (I guess you had to be there.)

Now I'm living my second childhood. (starting over?)

"Johnny" is an old family name. (Including my favorite uncle)
"Ringo" was a Beatle.

10. My 13 yr old nephew showed up a Christmas looking like I did in 1974...
(helmet hair) Constantly jerking his head to get the hair out of his eyes.

I asked his mother (my sister-in-law) if she liked it. She said 'no' so after dinner I hauled out my 1974 Senior yearbook and made him look at all the dorks (starting with his Uncle Richardo)

13. Quiana!! HAHAHAHA!!
I never thought I'd hear THAT term again.

Horrible Junior High moment: Our school marching band had to play at some garment/fashion convention in Palm Springs when they first introduced that stuff. We had to WEAR these horrendous plaid blue-and-white Quiana shirts and play 'Volare' so the MC could sing 'Quiana (wo wo)'. Note: This was first-generation synthetic material and they did NOT breathe at all. Temps were over 90 degrees, too.

Yes, that is when it is serious.

Btw, it's hard to run for the hills in platform shoes.

Personally, I'm really glad the shaggy hair thing's come back. Give me a shaggy-haired guy in low-slung pants, a tight tshirt, and a guitar.. hmm.. ok, I need a moment to clear my head now.

19. My tastes in men was formed in the 70s
So of course I like this look, and hate the Matt Lauer skinhead look.

Good to see longer hair returning. Not the "Hair the Musical" Treat Williams flowing locks. Just hair you can run your hands through (good luck with the men my age, but I still enjoy my happy memories...)

25. That's it. I'm letting my hair grow out.
And I'm going to start reading magazines other than Utne, The Economist, and Scientific American (unfortunately, the only place I ever see the magazines I need to read is where I get my hair cut so I may have to work some bugs out of the plan).

Until Vin Diesel turns to Jean Luc Picard, and no one will really notice that transition.
