HawkerHurricane’s weekly NFL power ratings.
Edited on Tue Sep-30-03 11:17 AM by HawkerHurricane
Here we go again with HawkerHurricane’s weekly NFL power ratings.

The rules are the same: 1 point for each win. 1 additional point for every win the teams you defeated get.
New tiebreaker: best record. In case of tie there also, my opinion.
And, in a change of format, I will now list them ‘worst to first’, and number them…
Now, let’s see some comments on this! I’m not going to stop posting these just because nobody comments!

32. San Diego Chargers. 0 points, 0-4. Anybody want to argue this? I didn’t think so.

31. Jacksonville Jaguars. 0 points, 0-4. No comment.

30. NY Jets. 0 points, 0-4. But only because I think the uniforms are cool.

29. Chicago Bears. 0 points, 0-3. 0-3 is better than 0-4, right?

28. San Francisco 49rs. 1 point, 1-3. Tied for last in the NFC West. Neener, neener, neener.

27. Detroit Lions. 2 points, 1-3. Beating Arizona doesn’t impress me.

26. Cleveland Browns. 2 points, 1-3. Losing to Cincinnati? Embarrassing.

25. Cincinnati Bengals. 2 points, 1-3. Start of a winning streak?

24. New Orleans Saints. 3 points, 1-3. Beating Houston doesn’t impress me.

23. Atlanta Falcons. 3 points, 1-3. Beating Dallas doesn’t impress me, but I approve.

22. Arizona Cardinals. 3 points, 1-3. Beating Green Bay impresses me.

21. Philadelphia Eagles. 3 points, 1-2. 1-2 better than 1-3. A little.

20. Oakland Raiders. 3 points, 2-2. Took you overtime to beat the Chargers?

19. Baltimore Ravens. 3 points, 2-2. Almost wrote Baltimore Colts. Shows how old I am.

18. Green Bay Packers. 3 points, 2-2. Packers, the socialism team. Owned by Green Bay.

17. New England Patriots. 3 points, 2-2. Received a call from Ashcroft: Patriots are underranked.

16. Houston Texans. 4 points, 2-2. Houston Oilers, part 2?

15. Buffalo Bills. 4 points, 2-2. I thought they were better than this.

14. St. Louis Rams. 4 points, 2-2. I like the Rams. Deal with it.

13. Dallas Cowboys. 4 points, 2-1. I already hate my tiebreaker system.

12. Miami Dolphins. 4 points, 2-1. I miss Junior Seau.

11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 4 points, 2-1. Overtime loss to Carolina cost them 3 points.

10. Pittsburgh Steelers. 5 points, 2-2. Overranked or underranked? You make the call.

9. Washington Redskins. 6 points, 3-1. This gets easier with the higher ranked teams.

8. Carolina Panthers. 6 points, 3-0. No comment.

7. New York Giants. 7 points, 2-1. I must like them, I listed them twice.

6. Seattle Seahawks. 7 points, 3-0. Surprise of the season.

5. Tennesse Titans. 8 points, 3-1. I guess I don't like them, since I left them out.

4. Minnesota Vikings. 8 points, 4-0. Will the Vikes go to the Super Bowl? And lose? Again?

3. Denver Broncos. 8 points, 4-0. They’re good. I hate them.

2. Indianapolis Colts. 9 points, 4-0. Come back to Baltimore, all is forgiven.

1. Kansas City Chiefs. 10 points, 4-0. Rematch of Super Bowl IV, Chiefs over Vikings?

Now, lets see some comments!

And no more comments about leaving out Tennessee, and listing NY Giants twice. When I asked for comments, I meant about the rankings, not that I repeat myself. And I didn't even get it right!

...and I'm too sleepy to figure out who isn't listed. :-)

Good comments!

6. Link for what?
I made it up, I posted it. It's mine. Only posted here. Information came from San Diego Union Tribune, who had thier own misprint, listing the Seattle Seahawks at 2-0.

5. Huzzah Dallas and Carolina!
I still am in disbelief about the Cowboys and Panthers! I'm near Dallas and I've actually liked the last few seasons where the real fans were separated from the bandwagoning ones (bandwagoning being a very popular pastime in North Texas). I am shocked they beat the Giants but not so shocked they beat the Jets (man they look BAD this year!).

As for Carolina...where did these guys come from? Did acquiring Stephen Davis and giving the reins to Delhomme really make that much of a difference?!?

Seahawks are going to be the team to beat from here on out...they look like they are now ready to live up to all the predictions about them LAST YEAR.

8. Cardinals ahead of Detroit?
Sorry, Hawker, but the Cardinals beat Green Bay in 105 degree heat. That's an asterisk of a win, if there ever was one. Detroit took care of business against those same Cardinals, and it almost took out Denver in Denver. The Lions are clearly ahead of the Cards at this point in the season.

15. Green Bay is 2-2.
Edited on Tue Sep-30-03 11:40 AM by HuckleB
Further, it's wins are against teams with a combined record of 1-6. What's more, the Lions have played tougher than the Cards. They've been outscored 98-77, while the Cardinals have been pummeled 130-57. Further, the Lions beat the Cards and they've got identical records. The tie-breaker should be head-to-head competition. So I say.

:)

17. You are correct
about the Pack's record.
But the points don't lie.
Cards 3, Lions 2.
If you want, you can create your own system.

18. Why would I do that?
Edited on Tue Sep-30-03 12:17 PM by HuckleB
It's more fun to criticize your system, after all. Anyway, a few tweaks would help make your system a true "power ratings" system. And I'm a tweaker!

For instance, if you took into consideration the records of the teams that New Orleans has lost to (10-1) in comparison to the records of the teams that Arizona has lost to (6-5), while they've both beaten one 2-2 team, with Arizona's win against a team that has beaten teams with a combined 1-6 record and New Orleans win against a team that has beaten teams with a combined 2-5 record, it would be difficult, in my estimation to rank Arizona above New Orleans. Similarly, Detroit has lost to teams with a combined 10-2 record, etc...

Hope I didn't tweak you the wrong way.

Cheers!

36. Sounds too much like work
Perhaps, if ESPN were paying me some ungodly salary (1/2 of what they pay Rush should do it) I would come up with something that reflects all the variables...

Someone call ESPN, and tell them you know how they can save money and generate less controversy...

9. I think you're going to be having to move them there Packers up a few
pegs. Bears are a yuck team in the league, but beating a division rival accounts for more points than you have given them. Super bowl team. Mark the date.

11. Sorry.
The Packers are right where they should be.

If they can take care of business against the Seahawks, then they move up. If not, the Packers are looking at an 8-8 year at best.

23. Unfortunately --
those three NFC North wins are what make the Vikes suspect among the league's elite thus far in the season. I hate to say it, as I've always been a Central/North fan, but things are bit off this year.

14. IF the Pack wins the next two..
They'll move WAY up on my list.
Seahawks and Chiefs in the next two weeks.
I like the Packers. The best of all time, with 13 NFL championships (3 in a row!), and no chance of ever leaving thier home town (since they are owned by the town).
As for a Super Bowl, it's only week 4 guys...NOBODY is out of contention yet.

22. Chargers are a very talented team who got off to a slow start
You made a negative comment about them last week, despite the record they are a very talented team and they are tough to beat. LaDanian Tomlinson, David Boston, Kwamie Lassiter, Drew Brees to name a few.

26. Good team, maybe
Lots of potential there.
But the owner is Replutocan scum of the worst sort.
Giving away Junior Seau and Rodney Harrison?
Putting crap on the field while insisting the city of San Diego 'owes' him a staduim (he's just crying because his current stadium deal gives him a percentage of all concession stand sales; no Padres games, fewer sales.) Definite case of 'Socialized risks, privatized profits'. He'll use (some) of the money the city will give him to pay off city council members, congressmen, senators, and and the governor, but only if they have the (R) behind thier name.
Nothing against the players. Or even the coaches. But the owner gets nothing but derision from me. He's ruining my home town to make money.

25. It's too soon in the season
anything can happen and records don't necessarily mean much til week 5. After that power rankings become more contentious and meaningful. I do like your system though and read it each week

27. Early in the season, it's a crapshoot
Poor teams that got lucky, good teams that got unlucky, other things...
It will stabilize, and the rankings will mean more, as more games get played.

And it's much too early to talk Super Bowls. Remember, Cincinatti went to the Super Bowl with a 8-8 record, and almost took it from San Fransisco, way back when.

A team is two wins two losses at .500 4 games into the season with 12 games left and you say "I thought you were better than this", well they play 12 more games. Plus Cinncinatti has been playing alot better with Marvin Lewis as their coach, in about 8 weeks that loss won't look so embarrasing. The Texans are only in their second year as a franchise, give them a couple more years before you pass judgment.

33. I thought they'd be ranked higher
I figured Buffalo as 4-0 now, or 3-1 at worst. 2-2 surprises me, especially the back to back losses.

As for the brand new Texans, I was making jokes about teams moving. The Texans are actually doing better than I expected, which proves nothing but that I am a lousy predictor.

34. Not a bad system
I think another consideration for a tiebreaker should be victory on the road. Certainly as the season goes along, and teams shake themselves out, the teams that can win on the road and take care of business at home will percolate to the top of the rankings (or, as is the case this week, the bottom), but in the meantime it can be an additional method to break some of those pesky ties particularly early in the season.

Go Cats!
