1. Michigan?
I'm from Ohio, the wife is from New Hampshire. When we see bad drivers she mutters "Massachusetts driver!" while I mutter "Michigan driver!" Having been to New England numerous times since our wedding however, I think she may be right about who is worse!

82. speed limits are just suggestions on the mass pike.
I gotta cut Bostonians a break. The layout of the city doesn't lend itself to the kind of orderly flow of traffic you (sort of) see in New York.

But there sure are in a hurry to get wherever they don't know they are headed. Driving fast but tentatively is a uniquely Michigan skill...

93. In Detroit, Canadians are the worst
Although we make a lot of money off of them when they come here to shop. They do tend to drive 55 mph in the left lane, however. Luckily, they also tend to avoid 696 (metro Detroit's autobahn).

One of the new ministers at our church moved from Minneapolis, where I guess they drive more sanely. He told us he got on 696 one day, and then said "You people are crazy".

111. Yeah, but people in Minneapolis
do not understand the concept of merging...you know, turn your turn signal on and move into traffic smoothly...most people see your turn signal and speed up so you do not get in the lane in front of them!

121. I have no trouble with 94 west from Detroit to Ann Arbor
Of course it always looks worse the other way. :)

But 696 is pure Hell to me. It's either an autobahn or its bumper to bumper traffic going less that 5 miles/hour. They should have planned better before opening Oakland county up to all those commuters. Any driving in the southern part is painful.

110. Another vote for Michigan!
Lived here all my life and people here in the Detroit area just do not seem to have a friggin' clue what a turn signal is for and drive aggresively as hell no matter what the weather conditions are like.

The latest is the damn cell phone drivers, yapping on the phone, driving 5 mph on a 50 limit road, usually in rush hour.

I know about those cell phone drivers!

I had a professor from NY (I go to a college in the metro Detroit area) and he asked, "does anyone ever use a turn signal here?".

He's right. I was changing lanes (and I always use at turn signal if someone is near me) the other day and some ass hole just cut in from the other lane. He had no signal and luckilly I moved over in time.

There are some real idiots out here.

40. Well, this one isn't. The worst ones here are tourists
I've seen tourists driving on the wrong side of the freeway, tourists STOP on the freeway to BACK UP for an exit they missed. Hell, it doesn't help that the signage down here is terrible.

I've traveled all over the states, and honestly the worst drivers I ever saw were in Boston (so yeah, I agree with the poll)!

11. I have a theory
The more politically extreme a state is, the more likely for the state to have terrible drivers.

For example, Texas has some of the nuttiest around, as do NY, and MA.

Also, while there are a lot of crazy drivers here in MI, I found the drivers to be crazier as I drive south (in TN and KY I'd get people flashing their lights and I was fifteen over already).

Never heard of turn signals, cutting across 3 lanes without so much as a glance into the traffic, changing speeds frequently, concentrating on their cell phone conversations instead of the road, applying makeup in the rear view mirror, reading the newspaper while driving at 60 mph - I could go on and on. The 20-mph-in-the-left-lane, apparently driverless cars in Florida are a close second.

I have lived in both. (15 in IL, 17 in WI)...

In IL, they just want to get the hell away from you. In WI, drivers play a game with trying to not let you pass. WI drivers have NO clue on merging... no clue what the left lane is designed for on the highway and are the MOST inconsiderate drivers ever.

Lots of angry, aggressive drivers. Loved going on Lake Shore Drive, although you always feel like driving faster than the limit, especially on the south side! But the truckers on the Kennedy-Dan Ryan were the scariest in the world, lots of wreckless acts and accidents.

I had to commute between Madison and Janesville in WI for 6 months last year and thought the truckers were much better drivers on the interstate than in IL.

My blood pressure drops when I cross from IL into WI.

94. No We Don't
The drivers here are HORRIBLE! Failing to go on green. Accelerating through yellow light. Blocking intersections and locking the grid. Refusing to move over to allow someone to merge on the highways. Right turns on red without actually stopping. Passing on the right.

After all the driving i've done all over the states, all over Europe and in Japan and China, i readily admit that we have the worst drivers. (Except maybe Barcelona.)

Too much weaving, passing on the right, failing to move for merging traffic. ("I was here first! YOU WAIT!")

Compared to LA or the Jersey turnpike, or the M-1, or Atlanta, or Houston, or Toronto, or SF, et al, the whole of NE Illinois needs a remedial driving refresher.

Locally (I'm in Philly) the Delaware drivers are just terrible but nationally Texas drivers are the worst I've ever come across. I've never seen such a display of idiotic driving as when I was in Dallas in November. The fact that their highway system is completely retarded doesn't help.

25. Massachusetts by a long shot
Not just bad drivers, but HUGE variation. Like, everyone has their own unique way of driving, so nothing is predictable.

Actually some things are predictable:
- people who make left turns onto busy streets, are even more likely to do it right in front of you during snowstorms. As if weather is no reason to change driving habits
- people on on-ramps will drive a decent speed, and then slam on the breaks at the very last minute.
- if a person bumps into you at a stop or yield sign, they will go racing off so you can't get their license plate numbers, and will not stop to see if you are ok

It's like those people have their necks in a brace and can't turn to look!

Also, people honk so much for no reason. So that when there is a honk for an actual emergency/warning, no one looks.

Also, people in crosswalks are not necessarily safe

70. LOL, my city is REMOVING crosswalks!
There was a local news article that mentioned it yesterday. People in California completely ignore crosswalks, and the number of peds who get injured and killed by cars here is absolutely staggering (it's one of the reasons Critical Mass got so big in SF). My local city, in an effort to reduce the number of people getting injured and killed in crosswalks is combating this problem by...REMOVING THE CROSSWALKS. The thinking is that crosswalks give pedestrians a false sense of security, and that by removing them the pedestrians are more aware of traffic and move across the street more quickly.

No, that is not a joke.

98. You would think they could come up with a better idea than that
In that case, you have MA beat on at least that issue.

Here, the issue with crosswalks is that if there are 4 lanes of traffic (2 going each direction), one car with stop for the person in the crosswalk. Another car will speed around that car and almost hit the person in the crosswalk. The cars in the other 2 lanes will usually see him/her.

So people in crosswalks have at least a 75% chance of living. That's pretty good.

Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 06:58 PM by RagingInMiami
www.delsjourney.com/closeups/us/best_worst/best_and_worst_states.htm

"Worst Drivers: Florida. As I learned many years ago when I lived near Tampa, you take your life into your own hands when you get on the Florida Interstates. Why are drivers so bad there? It's a combination of elderly retirees (who don't know where the accelerator is), drag-racing college kids visiting during spring break (who don't know where the brake pedal is), and out-of-state tourists (who don't know where the heck they're going). The roads in Florida are a real zoo."

64. Ask anyone from Philadelphia.
Things like merging and making left turns don't seem to require signals or a check in the mirror. They occur spontaneously, like sex changes in lonely bivalves. Lane changes are like heat lightning--fast, unpredictable, potentially destructive. Sudden stops often precipitate in decisions to use an off-ramp. (I drive from Phila. to Trenton everyday--and back. I mean this seriously tongue-in-cheek. I do *not* wish to anger anyone in NJ. I come from the land of traffic cones and endless roadwork--big truck rednecks, SUV pinknecks, and the city that threw snowballs at Santa. I do penance daily.)

68. I'll second California
Back when I worked in the SF Bay Area I was constantly amazed at the number of traffic accidents people manage to get into while stuck going 10MPH in rush hour traffic. We WALK better than we drive.

+ You have the airheads in the convertibles.
+ You have the 105MPH "cruising speeds" of our freeways when we're NOT in rush hour.
+ You have the fact that nobody here knows what a turn signal is (primarily because using your blinker in rush hour traffic is seen as a signal for people in the next lane to close ranks lest you "cut" in front of them).
+ Of course, we can't forget about the tens of thousands of illegals cruising our roads without any kind of drivers training or tests.
+ Most of us seem to think that it's legal to cross an intersection as long as the light is still yellow when we enter it...even if we have to accelerate to 90MPH to make it.
+ And as if that weren't bad enough, we're the car chase capitol of the world!

Oh, and we can't forget that 50% of our drivers are in SUV's and think they own the road.

I lived in Tucson for many years, and I tried to stay home when it rained hard, because the people who weren't from there didn't realize how fast the water piles up and how deep and fast it runs down the side of the roads. They just cruise along at 50 in a foot of water down a main drag fishtailing all the way!

54. The thing about Iowa
is that although it's supposed to be safe you still have to watch it sometimes. There are people here who've not driven in a town bigger than Iowa City and just freak out. There's also older drivers insisting the speed limit is 30 mph rather than 55 on two-lanes roads.
I've also seen several occasions where people insist on making left-hand turns from the right-hand lane where there is no double-turn lane. It's happened more than I want to remember.

Lived in the Boston area for a short time in the late 80's. Perhaps it's better now but at the time, this Arkansan was shocked. 60. I can't believe noone's mentioned Minnesota!
I will say we have THE worst road systems on the planet, but it makes for some horrendous driving! Number one, noone would use a turn signal to save their life. Number two, you can either go 90 in the fast lane or 45 in the slow lane, I hope you're one or the other. And if you think that just b/c we get a lot of inclement weather that people are accustomed and prepared to drive in the ice/snow, you are mistaken. During a snowstorm you will see 90 cars flipped off the side of the road on a stretch of highway. Oh---I'm ranting. Sorry! Minnesota drivers drive me crazy!

95. I have a theory about that.......
When a driver in Massachusetts, or New York, or Ohio, or Michigan for instance has so many violations on his driver's license record that he stands in jeopardy of having it revoked. That's when he decides to move to Florida to get a clean slate but still drives the same way.

BTW, I was born in Boston and have been driving in Florida most of my life and I'm convinced that you have to have suicidal tendencies in order to drive in Boston.

I swear to drive in the dc/nova area you MUST:

1)At least be in the early stages of glaucoma.

2) be certified a psychopath by a medical professional.

3)Have absolutely no regard for human life.

4) Believe that your car is made out of a space age material that allows it to pass though other objects, hence reducing the need to use blinkers, pass carefully, or otherwise pay attention to the car in front of, beside, and behind you.

5)When it is snowing or raining heavily, you must ACCELERATE to at least 30 mph over the speed limit, otherwise you will not skid and fishtail into other drivers thus causing traffic to back up miles.

6)In DC: If there are four lanes of traffic separating you from your left turn-fuck it, take it anyway!

7)Most importantly: no matter what your lyin' eyes tell you, you, and you alone, are the only car on the road.

I travel regularly for my job. 20 states and 10 foreign countries. NOBODY drives as discourteously and as oblivious to the other folks on the road as we folks in Illinois. Central Illinois is not so bad, since there aren't that many people there and the roads are seldom congested. But in the Chicago area, it's the worst i've ever experienced.

I lived in Worcester many years agto and lately I've been having to drive to Boston. I used to think Mass drivers were the worst but the DC area I think has finally surpassed them. The drivers around here are far more aggressive than they are in Mass. I feel more comfortable driving in Manhattan than in DC. And don't even try if there is snow on the ground.

Stay off the road, even if you're an experienced snow driver. The majority of folks around here have no clue what to do. Between the guys (and gals) in their big, macho, tailgating SUVs who drive too fast, and the freaked-out faction who drive so slowly that they can't get halfway up a moderate-sized hill without sliding back down, a person who actually knows how to handle a car in the white stuff doesn't stand a chance.
