Did you like Napoleon Dynamite?
I just saw it for the 1st time yesterday- I thought it was hilarious.
(even though it didn't have a plot)

"I noticed your drinking 1%. Is that because you think your fat?"

1. I liked it
I have family up in that area though--the movie is enormously popular among Mormons, but I also think parts of it are enormously funny. And the actor who plays Napoleon Dynamite is very intense.

who I know will love it, just to see them crack up.

When I watched it with my best friend, she nearly CHOKED when Kip said "Peace out" wearing his doo-rag and going out with LaFawnduh.

24. Yeah, really.
How can anyone say it didn't have a plot???

I mean Grandma and her mysterious date and breaking her coccyx? (LOL)

Uncle Rico and his attempts to return to 1982? (The time travel machine shit is CLASSIC--"Hold on, I forgot to put in the crystals.")

Napoleon and his quest for a date to the dance.

Deb and her trying to figure out Napoleon and Pedro and make money to go to college.

Kip and his quest for his babes online and then finally finding true love.

Pedro running for president!

Etc.

Lots of plot lines all intersecting beautifully.

23. There seems to be a big PR push for this film
Massive ad-campaign for "Napoleon Dynamite", trying to make it into "the" DVD of the moment. I see large, prominent displays for it at Best Buy, FYE, CD World. Web banner ads.

It looks like it's working -- it's top ten on Amazon.

No sex, no nudity, no violence (other than Rex Known Do), and a really sweet ending make it a great family film.

My kids and I have now seen it about 7 times each.

31. As for sure...
... I like all kinds of films but I'll tell ya, it is HARD to make a movie that adults can stand and kids like.

Belive me, I think I can count the ones that fit that for me on one hand, out of the last 10 years.

It did strike me that there is not only no sex/nudity/sexual situations, but there is no coarse language, no fart joke or poop joke.

And yet it is still funny! How did they do it!

33. fuck, no
annoying movie, annoying characters-it was MTV Pictures vision of what an "indie" movie looks like. Every character tried to be weirder than the last. It was the most contrived psuedo-hip Harmony Korraine/richard linkletter (sp-i know) waanabe ever made.

the forced eccentrism was so grating

Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 09:18 PM by last_texas_dem
Not particularly funny in my opinion, and depressingly mean-spirited to boot. Also, as I complained in another thread, to me one of its main flaws is that it gives you no reason to care what happens to its characters. To steal someone else's complaint as well, it was like it was a number of unrelated skits that strung together ran a decent enough length to make into a movie. That isn't always a bad thing, but if the substance of the skits isn't worth much it doesn't make for a great movie.

(Just my take, though... views were asked for so I figured I'd give mine. I hope everyone likes what they find good, dislikes what they find bad, and doesn't let others' views interfere. That's what I try to do myself. I just happened to be expecting more from this movie and ended up disappointed.)
