Snicker. I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. I just finished two hellish grant applications and I'm in the mood to tease fellow sufferers.

22. I'm talking about the Appalachians from the Tennessee area |
|
They're directly descendant from the Scots-Irish. Because they lived so isolated for hundreds of years, their accents did not really evolve the way the accents of say the Irish who settled in Boston and NY did. It's very noticeable when someone from northern Ireland says "bread" or "bed."

|
The "bluegrass" they played in the southern Appalachian chain evolved into country. A lot of good country, and particularly what's being called "roots music", sounds very much like Celtic music.
My grandfather wasn't from the Appalachians, but his people were from way back in the woods in Alabama. He would actually use "holp" as the past tense of "helped". That's middle English, I believe.

A whole series of books published in the 70's. They were trying to record, on paper, a disappearing way of life. I think there's about 7 or 8 of them.

As you point out, there are an enormous number of volumes and as I recall the text is fairly dense.

Answer: Pittsburgh. Actually, Brian O'Neill, columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, insightfully nailed Pittsburgh as "the Paris of Appalachia."

Got family throughout Pennsylvania. My mom's dad only came down here because he had no desire to work in the mines or steel mills, and my dad's dad worked for the NLRB so he worked in a lot of cities.
