Friends of Padraig18:
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 09:21 AM by Cuban_Liberal
Seems as though it's not a good morning here at DU, what with the news of Mrs. Grumpy, but Paddy was also admitted to the hospital about 2:30 this morning; he was in severe pain from his cervical disc, and it was not responding to the pain meds he had at home, so the neurosurgeon told him he needed to be admitted to the hospital. It seems likely at this point that he will be having surgery sooner rather than later, most likely some time this week. If you want to send him some good wishes/vibes, PM him and I will print them out for him to read when I go back to the hospital later.

Thanks!

Dr. Geier is top notch, according to everyone we've talked to about him, both lay and professional, so we have every reason to be optimistic about a good surgical outcome.

26. Man when it rains it pours
Sorry to hear about Pad too and his disc pain. I'm familiar with the kind of dire intense pain it can cause. Only one or two people in this world I'd wish that kind of agony on and it darn sure isn't anybody here at DU :-) Not sure which is worse, tooth pain or any disc problem pain. Both have had me, at one time or another, reduced to a helpless crumpled-up wimpering mass on the floor.
A few years ago I was strongly advised to become *ahem* more aware of my lower back and reduce the stress I put on her or else:-( Oh sure:eyes: A year later I woke up one morning and the ol clue stick whapped me upside of my thick head and I humbley got the message that time. Loud and clear- OWWWWWWWWCHA!

A girlfriend of mine couple years ago had surgery on her cervical spine due to a car wreck. She still has her uncomfortable days but she says, even on her worst day now it's still much better than her pre surgery condition.

Pad, I wish for you the best outcome from a surgery gone absolutely perfect;-) Hugs for you too C_L  It's taxing on our energies to see our precious ones laid up in pain:-(. I hate that. We just wanna take that pain away for them, but we can't:cry: So you need some good energy hugs C_L sent along with Pad's good healing vibes. They're on their way :-)

I had a cervical fusion done last January - it's healed beautifully and causes me NO pain whatsoever. I just went back to my very demanding physically job and though my feet and legs are killing me, my neck hasn't bothered me at all.

It takes quite a while for the bones to fuse but once they did, I was very happy with the result. After suffering chronic pain for over 10 years, it's heaven to be pain free.

Good luck with it! I hope all goes well for you. :hi:

71. Update, and a 'Thanks, everybody!' from Paddy:
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 02:23 PM by Cuban_Liberal
He's scheduled to have surgery Friday morning at 11:00, and should be in the hospital until Sunday. He can come home tonight, after the doctor checks on him again this afternoon. He's going to get a Fentanyl 'patch' and morphine pills for pain control, so I have to pick those up at the pharmacy this afternoon.

:)

Tony, I'm sure you'll take great care of him and prayers are heading your way for both of you as I type this.

I had lumbar disc surgery in July 2004 and have had no problems since. I was extremely lucky to have a great neurosurgeon do the procedure as well.

Take care and I'm sure we'll be hearing from you soon.

Sorry that he's not doing too well, it seems like a lot of people have been down.

81. I will, Scott.
I'm going to go pick him up in a bit. He gets to come home until Friday, now that they seem to have his pain under control.

84. Padraig, my mod friend,
I hope that you'll be well soon! The mod forum won't be the same if you're not there.

Cuban Liberal, thank you so much for conveying our get-well messages.

Thinking of you both,

87. Good luck Padraig!
I'm right behind you...I get to have surgery on my cervical spine, too. I'm really sorry that you got to a point where it was an emergency, but I know two people who have undergone the fusion procedure and they both said the relief was instantaneous. The pain of the surgery wasn't as severe as the pain of herniated discs and vertebrae crushing nerves.

I hope you come out of it OK. Let us know how you are doing, OK? I can really sympathize!
