Focus On The Family
Have they recently begun a new ad campaign or something? In the last two days, I've seen several Focus On The Family commercials, and this morning I was treated to James Dobson's face (and I was about to eat breakfast too!).

It's getting so I don't want to watch any television.

1. We get treated to him every day in Colorado Springs.
I think he still has an "editorial" spot for 5 minutes on the local NBC affiliate every morning. I don't know for sure, since I stopped watching that station as a result.

2. You poor people.
He doesn't have a minister's license, to my knowledge. And his psychologist's license was issued by California (I'm betting it is not active). So, basically, he is just a political/social Religious Right bully. I hear he is obsessed with creating a repressive society.

My bad WHITE MALE Persian cat, Snowball, subscribed to Dobson's citizen alert e-mails. Now, Snow chewed the edge of my Kerry/Edwards yardsign, before I posted it, and he went pee-pee on my copy of the Nation. So, we suspect that his political leanings lie on the Rethuglican side. Oh, yes, Snow is a neutered American, so he could have issues.

10. not real likely. His dad's a very strict minister. My real hope is
that I can save my kids. The other day hubby was telling them that evolution is a theory, which it is, but it is a theory with strong evidence to back it up, which he did NOT mention. :eyes:

I'm letting him do his thing for now, but when these guys are older I am not going to hold back on exposing them to other ways of thinking. Boy, is he ever going to be in for a surprise.

19. Ugh. I hate when people misuse the word theory
"Theory" in science isn't the same thing as it is in detective shows. For an idea to become a theory, it has to be proven to work. There has to be proven multiple cases where it is shown that the theory explains the evidence better than not using the theory. I had a professor that put it this way: "a theory isn't a fact, it's a bunch of facts".
When people dismiss evolution as "just a theory", tell them gravity is a theory too, and ask them to prove it doesn't work. See how long it takes before they float away.

Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 12:27 PM by Maat
'Focus on your own damn family,' on my car. However, in this red pocket in the Blue state of California, it would be a one-way ticket to your car getting keyed.

And, in all seriousness, I subscribed to Dobson's citizen e-mail alerts (or whatever) because the link was posted here, and they are really, really just TOO funny. The rest of the religious right sites have gotten boring - Dobson's always good for a little sheer insanity!

13. Yep.
People buy his books thinking he is just one nice psychologist. I refer all to www.pfaw.org and www.au.org, because they need to know what a huge org. he has, and what a one-man political action committee he is (him, along with many, many underlings).

I actually bought a book called, 'James Dobson's War on America.' It is very enlightening.

Nothing made sense until the author of the above book, Gil Something, stated that Dobson's family (father, uncle) were big in the very fundie Church of Nazarene. Then, if you take a look at that, his obsession with making everyone live a rigid life makes much more sense.

16. No, the hugest.
Belongs to the Council for National Policy, a secretive polical org. that meets more with the president than our Senate is allowed to. Members are not allowed to tell anyone they are members.

Trying to find his link. Will post it.

There it is:

http://www.family.org/

Go to www.pfaw.org, www.au.org, or to theorcracywatch.org, for more info. on what he has been up to.

Look up 'James Dobson's War on America' for some info. from the cover.

He is the most dangerous man - he has definitely outpaced Pat Robertson. I have a feeling Pat is after $; this guy's is more dangerous - he actually believes his own drivel. Read how he has this huge compound, and all of these little interns running around.

20. The people I knew who attended Church of the Nazarene services told me
that they were very strict, at least as applies to female behavior. No make-up, no pants, no speaking in church (even in tongues!), etc.

I wonder if Dobson wears make-up for his tv appearances.

No speaking in church - to say that's not the faith for me is the understatement of the World. His writings have always had a sexist, patriarchal flavor.

24. Church of the Nazarene?!?!
Fundie, really?

I went to one once when I was a teenager. A bunch of pot heads brought me, it was their church. We went and everyone looked like a bunch of partyers- this was in the 80's. The preacher wore jeans. Afterwards they told me that he was a recovering drug addict.

Fundie? This must have been an "off" congregation.

15. Dobson
That man is one scary individual. One of his former associates wrote a book about his time with Focus on the Family - think it was called The Scariest Man in America or something similar. Dobson is really into the idea that babies and toddlers are evil, willful creatures who need to be "broken" with spankings and paddlings and made completely obedient to their parents. One of my fundy collegues gave me one of his books on discipline (Dare to Discipline or Strong Willed Child, can't remember now) when my husband and I adopted our little girl. I knew it was going to be bad, but until I read a little of it on the metro going home, I didn't know how bad. I was so appalled that I did something I rarely do with books - I threw it out.

34. Yes, I guess so!
No doubt - Twilight Zone scared. Doesn't it give you a warm, fuzzy feeling to know that guy gets a lot of time with your government officials? I heard he threw quite a tantrum one time when some government official did not seem to be responding to him.

I graduated from law school this past June - church and state issues are kind of my law research specialty/hobby (I'm getting that going, just for my own satisfaction). Dobson is ... basically ... the opposition.
