WTF moment: my hyacinths are blooming.
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 01:41 PM by WMliberal
We've had mid 60's- mid 70's temps for two weeks now. So my hyacinths decided that it must be spring...

I'm going to have to dig them up, put them in pots, and bring them in before we have a frost this weekend.

Friggin stupid nature....

Just checked my other bed. The daffodils have started coming up too, but they'll be okay in a frost. No sign of tulips or crocuses (sp? how do you pluralize crocus?)

Anyone else having early blooms because of this crazy weather in the South?

1. Hey...we've got *grass* growing in Antarctica...and You're Surprised?
By a few hyacinths?

:)

I know...it still is bizarre and inconvenient, though.

Crocuses is fine.

18. if warm enough for grasses to grow, warm enough for glaciers to melt.
Rand report to DOD says ocean levels will rise 353 feet with ice sliding off western side of antarctica....maybe this year?

LOL

Strange that your flowers are blooming so early. Maybe it means that it'll be an early spring.

4. this is like two months early! def. not an early spring.
Just a few plants with a death wish.

Oh well, at least my kitchen will smell nice when I bring them in.
I'm thinking of giving one to the girl next door as thanks for giving us a TON of Christmastime baked goods.

5. That would be a nice gift
I'm anxiously awaiting spring here. I raise some rather unusual plants and can hardly wait till they come out of their winter rest period.

19. Because in the Guardian's letter pages
people keep on writing in about flowers that are in bloom out of season in their gardens. It's so fucking tedious but they keep at it all the same. For some reason they keep printing them.

9. Crocuses is correct when it's more than one species.
I collect the things and have many unusual species. If you have a bunch of Crocus blooming, and they're all the same variety, "The Crocus are blooming" is correct and plural. Different species blooming - and you have, "The Crocuses are blooming".

16. crocuses is correct then. I've got three species.
in either case, I'm glad they're not blooming right now. Only the hyacinths and daffodils are being abbynormal.

13. Yeah, my brother is in Seattle, WA
and his tulips and daffodils are coming up. Worried that if they get a frost they'll be done for the year.

I'm in Iowa and I've got buds on my lilac bushes.

15. It might as well be spring. I'm as restless as a willow in a windstorm.
I'm as jumpy as puppet on a string
I'd say that I had spring fever
But I know it isn't spring
I am starry eyed and vaguely discontented
Like a nightingale without a song to sing
O why should I have spring fever
When it isn't even spring
I keep wishing I were someone else
Walking down a strange new street
And hearing words that I've never head
From a girl I've yet to meet
I'm as busy as spider spinning daydreams
Spinning spinning daydreams
I'm as giddy as a baby on a swing
I haven't seen a crocus or a rosebud
Or a robin on the wing
But I feel so gay in a melancholy way
That it might as well be spring
It might as
Well be
Spring

17. Believe it or not, it's not all that unusual...
I peeked at your profile. Are you on the Eastern Shore? I'm in the DC area, and grew up around here. Sometimes we'll get mild winters. Sometimes we have 70 degree weather in January, and record snowfalls in February.

Watch for strong weather systems that come from the southwest, up the Blue Ridge. If they meet cold air along the way, we get snowed upon big time.

If you've got any leaves you haven't raked yet, you might want to cover your daffs with them. The temps are supposed to drop sharply by the end of the week.

22. I'm in Chesapeake.
The daffs should be fine because of the ground clutter we have over them. But those hyacinths are being dug up and coming indoors.

24. my stupid daffodils are over 3 inches tall. I swear every year
they shoot up earlier. Eventually they are going to be blooming for Thanksgiving. Like Ramadan, they will just cycle around the calendar.

At least I don't have to worry about a cold snap, unless it hits while they are setting buds.
