2. Hey, Napoleon. What did you do last summer again? |
|
Napoleon Dynamite: I told you! I spent it with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines! Don: Did you shoot any? Napoleon Dynamite: Yes, like 50 of 'em! They kept trying to attack my cousins, what the heck would you do in a situation like that? Don: What kind of gun did you use? Napoleon Dynamite: A freakin' 12-gauge, what do you think?

5. On behalf of those of us who haven't seen it and don't plan to |
|
I request an eternal moratorium on all Napoleon Dynamite quotes, at least in the workplace. Please. They aren't at all funny or interesting in isolation from the movie. Thank you.

8. as i said yesterday, i hated, hated, hated this movie |
|
it tries to hard to be clever and weird. it's by mtv pictures and is the viacom version of what an "indie" film should look like.
the characters are so forcibly-psuedo-eccentric that they all seem mildly retarded. the plot is forcibly non existant. the main character is horribly unlikeable.
this film tries to steal the best elements of the work of todd solondz, harmony korine, and Richard Linklater and one-up them. the result is a contrived, unlikeable film that feels like it was written by a guy who was practically beating off at his keyboard as he wrote every oh-so-clever line.
it's the kind of film that appeals to thick frame glasses-wearing coffee house asses who need to feel edgy
so, yeah, i guess i give it a thumbs down

listen, I totally dug on Slacker, but feel free to outline the plot of that film for me. Sorry you didn't like the film. I thought the characters were great, and enjoyed the unpretentious dialogue.

16. i agree slacker has no plot |
|
but i think that was what ND was ripping off stylistically. (though i think happiness is also a bit more of a source) to me there's a fine line between influence and forced imitation and i just get the feeling that the directof ND crosses it a lot
i think linklater was truly inspired when he made slacker over a decade ago, but to me the director of ND seemed to view a bunch of linklater-esque films and thought "hey, i can make weird people be in my movie, too. and they'll wear even uglier clothes in my movie!"
but that's just my two cents

20. It's an MTV film in the same way Toy Story was a Disney film |
|
IIRC, MTV didn't come along until the film became a surprise hit on the festival circuit. This happens with independent films all the time. They are made, given narrow distribution, and then sometimes purchased by bigger distribution companies (in this case Fox Searchlight and MTV) who really don't have anything to do with the film, but do have the weight to promote and distribute it.
You can still hate it if you want :), but dismissing it as an MTV film isn't entirely accuarate.

Seems like a lot of anger toward a fairly innocuous movie.

In my mind, it's a worse-than-average, fairly bad movie that keeps getting worse and worse the more I keep hearing about how great it is. Not trying to deny anyone their right to enjoy it, though; just presenting the side of a tiny minority of viewers that disagree.

I don't have all the sweet quotes down like you...his Pedro for President dance was too much. And those after ski boots, and the guy shooting the cow right when the school bus went by, and the helping hands club performance, and Uncle Rico closing the tupperware deal, and Kip grating all the cheese...and...
