Why are U2 fans so touchy when people criticize them? |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 07:58 PM by Wat_Tyler
Who cares what others think. Why does the fact that I think Bono is a horrible, pretentious, self-obsessed, preening, not-particularly talented hack matter a damn to you? It's not as if I'm ramming it down your throat or anything.
On edit - I forgot goat-throttling. Sorry.

Kidding. Really its because they are good. They aren't the worst thing to happen to music.... (Milli Vanilli....)
Plus, Bono wears those big Maphesto glasses and it makes all of us crazy!

|
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 07:59 PM by Rabrrrrrr
because their brains aren't developed enough to find safety and satisfaction in their own works, so they have to attach their psychological and emotional worthiness as a human being to the supposed "goodness" or "worth" of a rock band.
Stupid people do it with sports teams. Less stupid people do it with rock bands. Generically stupid people do it with authors and composers.

And you shouldn't give a fuck what I think about any group either. It isn't just U2 fans - it's fans who can't take any criticism from others who don't share their taste. We're all different. Get the fuck over it and move on.

I think it has to do with just really liking someone.
When someone attacks that person/persons you have an affinity for/towards, you subconsciously feel that someone is attacking your good sense for liking that person/persons.

it's just a piling on by people who want to whine about a band that's getting praise and decent sales. no one was whining about u2 a few years ago, not trashing them makes you subversive
a lot of gen x-ers do the same with the beatles, blindly hating the band just cuz their parents like them

41. Actually, I think it's "hip" to whine about the "oh so hip" |
|
a few years ago, when "pop" came out, everybody hated U2.
Nowadays, whenever anyone complains about something that used to be cool, the defenders claim that the protestors are only trying to be hip or edgy. That may be the case in some instances, but the broad generalizations just seem like a way to dismiss criticism without having to consider its merits.
There are some people who've never liked U2 and some people who've never forgiven them for "selling out" with the Joshua Tree almost twenty (!) years ago. There are also plenty of people who used to like U2 but don't like what they're doing now. Nothing wrong with that. I don't happen to be one, as I love pretty much the whole catalog, and I even think that the much-maligned Pop is a masterpiece of sorts. I haven't entirely gotten into the new album, but I figure I probably will. Bono's grandstanding and ego do tend to get on my nerves, but I generally don't let it interfere with my enjoyment of the music :D
As for the Beatles, I think they could do no wrong from Revolver onward (some of the early stuff is pretty off the shelf). I know some folks who don't like the Beatles, some have their reasons and others maybe just haven't listened with the right kind of ears. But it's pretty condescending to dismiss gen x-ers who don't like the beatles as blindly hating the band just because their parents like them. Truth is, I don't know a single gen x-er who I think would fall into that category. Back in 11th grade I had some younger friends who approached it that way (one actually tried to argue that Vanilla Ice was more musically significant than John Lennon :wtf:), but they all grew out of it eventually :7
