Coltrane fans: Branford Marsalis, "A Love Supreme Live"...yay or nay?
I look at it this way...I'd love to hear Trane perform it live, but he can't. As a matter of fact, he only did it ONE TIME...July 1965, in France, as documented on the second disc of "A Love Supreme: Deluxe Edition."

My reaction to this was a positive one...it will never make me stick the original up on a dusty shelf, but it was a big, big risk...and if I had the chance of NEVER hearing this masterpiece live, or hearing it played by Marsalis...I think that John, wherever he is in the grand scheme of things, would want his music to be heard.

YOUR thoughts?

"Goodbye Pork Pie Hat." I could play that song over and over in different versions by different artists for a few hours just from my own collection.

Marsalis is actually a very fine player, and he get's a bad rap for being "commercial."

Coltrane died when I was fifteen, before in fact, I knew who he was. His work is his work and nothing can detract from it and it can, and will be rediscovered, over and over, but it's not a sacred text. Marsalis is keeping the work exposed.

I will say this though: I went to see "Weather Report" when Jaco Pastorius was playing with them and during Wayne Shorter's solos, they kept flashing these giant projections of pictures of Trane behind him. It annoyed the shit out of me somehow.
