It looks like my whole family might be moving there.. more opportunities for us all. Is it a nice place to live?

1. If you like Virginia Tech, you'll love Blacksburg.
That's what's going on there. It's a college town with a quality university with an outstanding football program. Many of the students are from Northern Virginia so it's not that conservative. In fact, it's a party school with kids who somehow do well in demanding classes.

Nearby is Radford University, such a fun place that when the merry-makers from Tech run out of fun, they go to Radford for some serious partying.

It's about 2 hours from Richmond and 4 hours from Fairfax County and the DC area. There are some other places of semi-interest near by but I can't think of their names (e.g., Roanoke, VA).

All in all, if you like college towns, it gets an A for the college, A+ for school spirit & football, and an I(incomplete) for the little town.

My dad might have a job at Virginia Tech in scientific research, and I'd follow along because I haven't found much where I am.

6. They're good across the board.
Don't know what your situation is but typically university employees get a nice big break on tuition for their kids. Tech is exceptionally good for Computer Science/Engineering, Engineering, and rokin for Business. Don't know the other extra strong programs but it's quite a good school. Enjoy if you go. You will be a "Hoakie"

I'm thinking there could be a good computer-oriented job offered at the university.

2. Frat boy central.
I knew several kids that went to Virginia Tech, and had to drop out because it was just like 13th grade.

Other than that, it's in the middle of fucking nowhere.

Sound good yet?

9. Roanoke is a decent little city...
I lived there for a year (went to Roanoke College) and spent weekends partying in Blacksburg. If you already know you have better opportunities there, you'll be fine. No worries.

22. Blacksburg is cool
Like others have said it's a college town so there's more happening from Sept-May than during the summer. You're not going to find big city excitement there or in Roanoke but there's enough happening most of the time to keep you as busy as you want to be. If you're into outdoors type stuff the area is great for that. Blacksburg/Montgomery County has around 83,000 people and the Roanoke area has 250,000.

I live in Roanoke and like it. Whenever ever I get craving big city fun DC or Charlotte are easy drives.

A friend of mine owns a tattoo/body piercing shop in Blacksburg so if you end up moving there I'll see about getting you a discount. Or if you're not into that I'll buy you a beer.

23. Oh, one more thing
Don't know your musical tastes but if they tend to the harder stuff check this site, www.getrockedout.com. They cover mainly Blacksburg and Harrisonburg. Or my site starcitypunk.com, which covers mostly the Roanoke metro area but I have members from all over Va/DC/WVa.

29. Wow...
I used to run a little Xeroxed indie-rock zine in that area when I was a teenager in the 80s. I lived way out in the sticks (Carroll County) but most of my writers and friends were in Roanoke. I'd go up there every weekend. Iroquois Club! Record Exchange!

25. I lived there for 5 years
Ask me anything ;) I was a student at Tech and now Im a proud Hokie Alumn (Dec '03, BS in Biology). Its a great town but I hope you like crazy weather. It gets colder than a witches tit in a brass brazier! There are lots of good, small bars. I reccomend Hokie House. Every day, 5-6, you get any 24 oz draft beer (Newcastle! Guinness!) for $2! The Rivermill is also a nice place. For good food, try Souvlaki's (excellent greek food), Emilios (Lebanese, also good) or Alpha's (GREAT subs!). They're all on Main St. The town itself is well planned and pretty laid back. Its great in the summer...theres no students and the river is a 15 min drive away. There are mountains for hiking and a great frisbee golf course outside of town. The campus is beautiful and hog wild during football season. The cops can be pricks (sorry, Im a bit jaded...). All in all its a great town and a fun place to live. PM me if you have any questions.

-Alec

p.s. GREAT live music during the school year @ Baylees

28. I know there's an active Dem group that meets regularly
at one of the restaurants there. They were active in the Kerry campaign, and they participated in Iraq war protests in the past. I'm on their email list so I know they are still active. They are now arranging a bus to go to DC to protest the inauguration, and they are also looking ahead to the VA Governor's election.

I don't know much more about Blacksburg, I don't live far from there but I never go there (I avoid Rt. 81 - it's a little dangerous with all of the tractor trailers and bad SUV drivers.)

I can give you Roanoke information though. Welcome to Virginia :-)

30. It's in the middle of nowhere. Morons everywhere
Lots of Virginia's second rate college students. The ones rejected by UVA or W&M.
And then the townies... drive 20 minutes in any direction and you'll be among the reddest of red country Virginia.
