Grandma update: she's in pretty bad shape
Here's my earlier post.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=2402640&mesg_id=2402640

It turns out the valve and the bypass surgery went well, but some of the muscle in back of the heart was weak and torn up and bleeding or something. They had to patch it together with some kind of glue or something, plus she's back on the heart pump and they have to give her some medicine that makes her heart beat stronger to try to strengthen it back up. The doctors said there's a chance that she'll make it. When they said a chance without giving how much of a chance, my mom said she looked at my grandfather and saw that it was kind-of the first time he realized she might not make it. I understand that this might be their way of not getting us too hopeless about it, but I also think it may be that it's a rare situation so they really don't know - could be a good chance.

I will say that I have more of a sense of acceptance about it now. I am pretty calm about it, no matter what happens. I went around and took a walk. My mom's a little shook up and starts into fits of crying, though she says she understands it's a part of life and will get through it. She says it makes her feel better that I'm calm about it.

1. I'm sorry to hear it...
that's tough. But it's not over yet by any means. I wish her the best of luck.

2. My prayers are with you.
They can work wonders with the heart anymore. How old is your Gramma?

5. She's eighty years old.
She always seemed young for her age until the last year or so though. She started having back problems and seeming a little frail and tired lately, but she's still a fighter, and her and my grandfather are somewhat age-defiant. After the initial heart attack when she was in the hospital bed, she was complaining that she was bored and wanted to go home!

3. It is what it is, and it will happen when it's meant to.
Until then soak in all that you can.

6. I'll keep you and your grandma in my thoughts
It means the heart attack did more damage than they thought to the heart muscle no doubt.
