Hartford CT area DUers - death penalty forum tonight
From today's Hartford Courant - also posted in the CT forum.

Although this column usually highlights the lighter side of the arts and entertainment happenings in the region, it also features special programs that reflect the serious side of current events.

The scheduled execution of serial rapist and killer Michael Ross in a Somers prison has generated discussions about the morality of capital punishment and the legality of lethal injections.

Tonight, state Sen. Mary Ann Handley, D-Manchester; and state Reps. Ryan Barry, D-Manchester; Christopher Stone, D-East Hartford; and Jack Thompson, D-Manchester, host an open forum about the death penalty and invite you to join the debate during the question and answer period. The forum will be in the Fireside Commons in the library at Manchester Community College, Great Path, from 7 to 9 p.m. Call 860-512-2912 for information.

4. My fiancée works at the Capital and I'm right around the corner. We'll try
and make it. I signed a petition at church. Hopefully we can end this once and for all.

5. well, support is generally slipping
I did an extensive study back in the late 80s when I was in college (sorry, don't have the study or backup anymore, just going from memory)... but, back then more CT residents were in favor of the death penalty (80%?) and when asked if life without parole was an option, it life w/o parole by a very close margin.

Now, it's "only" 2/3 that support the death penalty and the life w/o parole option wins pretty easily at 60%.

Slowly but surely, the tide is changing.

9. Die pig die makes a good sound bite
Or, something similar, comes across in 2 seconds on TV, while an anti death penalty sound bite likely takes longer.

10. let's face it
the general population doesn't want to think too hard or too long on something like this. The death penalty message of retribution for crimes is too easy to accept.

Of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Of course, that comes from Hammurabi originally.
