'Ali G' enrages rodeo crowd
http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1243181.html

Ali G comic Sacha Baron Cohen is being blamed for a hoax which enraged cowboys at a US rodeo. The comedian's other alter ego, bumbling Kazakhstani Borat Sagdiyev, is the chief suspect behind the stunt at a rodeo at Salem, Massachusetts.

It started when a 'Middle Eastern man in an American flag shirt and a cowboy hat' was introduced to the crowd as Borat Sagdiyev from Kazakhstan, an immigrant touring America.

Speaking in broken English, the man said: "I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards. And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq."

He then told the crowd to be seated, put his hat back on, and launched into a butchered version of The Star-Spangled Banner that ended with the words "your home in the grave".

88. Actually Borat is an ingenious character whose persona reflects and
spoofs the real genocidal idiots out there. Sascha Baron Cohen is making fun of the people who really feel the way Borat does. It is very funny but the underlying concept of the satire is to reveal these monsters for what they are. Each character he does goes after a different type of bigot it seems, Borat highlights anti-semitism and genocidal infighting in civil conflicts within eastern block countries, Bruno goes after the homophobes, and Ali G just lampoons everybody in between especially the pompous politicians and talking heads he interviews. Hysterical show but definitely not for everyone. An acquired taste for some.

109. okay, I'm reassured.
an being a backwoods redneck by birth, I REALLY respect the kind of courage it takes to do these things. He could have been shot at any moment. It's hard enough to confront an individual freeper or idiot, but a whole crowd of them? Wow.

I have caught his show a few times and he has guts I tell you. He does the most outrageous stuff to, politicians, activists and just normal folks who never know he is doing satire. The best was his interview with Pat Buchanan. ROFL! This latest stunt is certain to show up on HBO soon and I can't wait to see it.

Apparently, he wore out his welcome, so-to-speak, in England, so he came to the U.S. to do it. I feel like after his popularity rises, there won't be anyone left to "interview."

Did you happen to catch the one with Andy Rooney? He was pissed off.

...I guess I didn't feel "bad" for Rooney since he was a prick right back to him. There have been other instances where he was messing with senior citizens and they had no idea. Those are the ones I feel worse for.

You gotta admit, that was classic when Rooney corrected his grammar (Rooney: No! What DO you think, not what DOES you think! -- Ali G: You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to.) HAHAHA! I was dying laughing...

Buchanan: No

Ali-G: Is it ever worth fighting a war over sandwiches

I just hope he's very, very careful when messin' with rednecks, they are pathological.

That's not judgement, I'm just saying I know my kin is all.

Maybe he's naive. Probably not. Thanks for the clips, it's good to know there is someone out there doing work like that, with humor. This is performance art where the subjects actually participate. Types like Andy Rooney have had this coming for a long, long time, I hope that profession dies completely, these human institutions of media that act like their opinion matters more than most average people, like they are so smart they need to tell us how to think and feel. Fuck them, I hope he embarasses every one of them.

21. Why does an article not about Ali G start with "Ali G......"
Very odd.

Best Borat moments:

"Do you hunt?"
"No, I'm retired..."
"Oh, you are retard, like mongoloid?"
"Yes..."

At an anti-hunting rally:

"There are no bears in Kazakhstan, we shot them all"
"Why did you shoot them?"
"For fun....."

At a dinner party:
"My wife...she is dead. She died in a field, from work......But I have new wife now!"

Ali G is one character from Sacha Baron-Cohen (Sp?). Borat is another completely different character. So, you could legitimately start the article with, "Sacha Baron-Cohen........" but not "Ali G". You could argue that Borat was at the rodeo, you could argue that Sacha Baron-Cohen was at the rodeo, but you can't claim that Ali G was at the rodeo because he wasn't. It's just lazy journalism IMHO.

You wouldn't start an article about Mike Myers' character Wayne from Wayne's World at a rodeo with "Austin Powers Outrages Rodeo......." it doesn't make any sense.

On edit: Just before I die of pedantry, it's really only the headline that I'm picking holes in. I think it does make sense to say "Ali G comic Sacha Baron Cohen is being blamed for a hoax which enraged cowboys at a US rodeo", but the headline clearly implies that it was the Ali G character that caused the offense.

Citizens of the US be careful. ALI G is "huge" around the rest of the Anglo-Saxon World! He specializes in what we would call "Taking the Piss" out of people and particularly cultures. He's actually a Jew called Cohen (No-you don't say). It took OZ two series of his show before we even started to love him!! He is very good! particularly when you first experience him! "Jesusland" is an absolutely "Easy" target!!! British,OZ,Kiwi and maybe Canadian TV will see this later on in 2005 and probably "laugh" their heads off at "Jesusland's" stupidity and bigotry. Remember he's supposedly from Kazakhstan!!!LOL

68. It doesn't do the show justice explaining it with words.
It's definitely something you just have to see for yourself. Sometimes it can, perhaps, be offensive to some. As far as the "interviews" go, it's really not much different than what the Daily Show does on their interview segments. Just pulling off some humor over unsuspecting, sincere interviewees.

I mean, I still think fart jokes are funny.

But I'm really not sure what the objective with this kind of stuff is. I guess he is filming it for use at a later time, but I never got the point of completely infuriating an audience unless there is a payoff. Kaufman got dangerously close to that line sometimes, but at least in Memphis, there was a payoff - Jerry Lawler beating him in the ring. But when it left the ring, it just confused audiences. The Letterman appearance is rightly famous, but to this day, I don't understand what Kaufman and Lawler were doing.

No shit, the same character, Borat, is playing guitar and singing in a Texas bar, he starts singing a song about hating the jews, lets throw them all down the well, and gets the whole bar stomping and singing along. Hilarious.

EDIT: You can see the fallout on the Roanoke Times Messageboard. Apparently some get the joke, while others don't. One person even says they agree with him.

season. He was just getting a feel for the characters in the US setting 1st season. 2nd season should be out soon. It is priceless. Borat is the best character of the three, by far the most wicked skewering is done by his character.

99. He almost got beat up once before by some redneck in a Home Depot
setting. He was interviewing him as Bruno, the guy was being all friendly and nice until Bruno revealed the 'show' he was interviewing him for was a gay TV show. The guy then immediately started becoming very threatening and menacing and Bruno became Sasha very quickly and backed off. He knew he was gonna get whooped if he didn't. It was cringingly funny but more uncomfortable. Wonder if the rodeo footage will even make it to the show, or if it will be similarly uncomfortable if it does. When the people go along with it, like they did with 'throw the jew down the well', it is hysterical with creepy overtones, but when they turn mean right away, .....who knows if it will be funny. Probably. I always laugh hysterically during the show, but upon reflection when I realize that these bigots are out there in numbers, it is really scary to contemplate. I think that's the dual purpose of the show, and satire in general I suppose.

94. I really never got this type of humor
I love the Ali G character just because it is so absurd to see him talking to Koffi Anan. But I've never gotten the vein of comedy which desires to infuriate the audience. It's probably why I've never fully understood Andy Kaufman either - paricularly the wrestling stuff.

106. Two audiences
The audience he is performing before are the targets. He extracts their hatred and reduces them to a ridiculous state by this means. He films it or it would be a pointless exercise. Their displays of hatred and bogotry are the display. They are to be ridiculed and exposed.

107. But why?
In the right setting, anyone can be reduced to a pretty ridiculous display of bigotry. Put me at a football game with a few beers inside me and you could probably pull a lot of nasty stuff out of me with the right prodding? We all have dark sides.

He was cheerleading in front of 90,000 rabid rednecks looking and acting as stereotypically gay as one could be. You should have heard the hateful comments the freepers were screaming at him.

102. This reminds me of Mark Twain's War Prayer
"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle – be Thou near them! With them – in spirit – we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with hurricanes of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with their little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it – for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen."
- Mark Twain

Sang the Star Spangled Bannner (poorly, to scattered applause) then, just as everyone was ready to sit and play ball, launched into the double-album-with-extended-drum-solo version of the Khazakstan national anthem.

Painful jibberish, of course. People just stood and stood and stood... God.

114. "I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards."
That might be my new favorite line of his. The other one is when he interviewed astronaut Buzz Aldrin as Ali G:

ALI G: When you went to da moon, was da moon people friendly, or did they scare you?

ALDRIN: We had no hopes of finding any life there whatsoever.

ALI G: When is man going to walk on de sun?

ALDRIN: It's much too hot on the sun; we can never go there.

ALI G: We could go in de winter, when it's colder.
