"Let's Trim Our Hair in Accordance with Socialist Principle"
This is the actual title of a breakout reality TV hit in North Korea's new television season, a show with the weekly argument that men should cut their hair twice a month according to the "socialist principle" that long hair robs the male body of essential nutrients.

I wonder if North Korean progammers could use some help. How about a show called "Chill with Il," which would be a weekly rundown of the most popular reeducation camp labor gang songs--most popular with the Exalted Leader, of course.

1. I am trying to figure out how that could even be REMOTELY believable.
Hair is dead. It doesn't consume any nutrients. Yes, to *grow* hair you need to use protein, but it's gonna grow at the same rate no matter how much is already out there. Oy, junk science.

4. I read last week that Korea said it has no gays
and no cases of HIV due to the high moral nature of their people and culture.

Mondo Bizarro. When that reality bubble finally bursts, it's going to be really really ugly.

6. It would be very difficult to be gay in north Korea.
Too bad they haven't followed China and Cuba's lead and adopted better policies on homosexuality (in China, for instance it is legal and no longer considered a mental illness and the party publications call for greater tolerance). They still follow the Stalin position that it is a symptom of the decadence of the declining exploiting classes--one that calls for measures of class struggle (meaning, prison).

As the country integrates with China and opens limited regions to joint ventures with foreign enterprises, I expect a limited opening politically. Some forces there have flirted with the "Chinese option" economically, while wishing to maintain the "Juche" way and Kim personality cult.

On the other hand, I would not at all be surprised if AIDS were an extreme rarity--there are few opportunities for sex outside marriage or for illicit drug use for most people there, in a closely supervised existence. Of course it is contracted in other ways as well.

5. Here's an article about the show:
N Korea wages war on long hair

North Korea has launched an intensive media assault on its latest arch enemy - the wrong haircut.

A campaign exhorting men to get a proper short-back-and-sides has been aired by state-run Pyongyang television.

...

Singled out
This offender's excuse to the TV was that he had recently returned from a foreign business trip. But the programme found another businessman who said "Whenever I go on overseas trips, I tidy myself in accordance with the Socialist lifestyle."
