Frybread Story

Coyote was making frybread dough

when young Magpie stopped in

to offer his own recipe.

An extra handful of flour and

another dash of salt, he said,

would assure very fine results.

Coyote chased him away, shouting,

"I’m not making very fine results,

you asshole,

I’m making frybread!"

Have you read of Peter Blue Cloud's coyote tales? He is a trip.

I was feeling kinda blue today (hangover side-effect, methinks) and started thinking about one where Coyote Old Man squats on a trail and drops a turd fashioning the first people.

I hadn't thought about Peter Blue Cloud in a couple of years. I will be getting his book off the shelf tonight.

I have the great Barry Lopez book of Coyote tales ("Giving Birth to Thunder, Sleeping with His Daughter" and Heyday Press in Berkeley puts out some good collections of California Indian Coyote (and other trickster) tales, too...
