49. Mom named me Cindy Jo
And I grew up in Southern California!

Not Cynthia, just Cindy - after a co-worker.

I hate it to this day.

She tells me she wanted to name me "Nicole" and call me "Nicky", but didn't know the "proper" spelling . . .

-Cindy in Fort Lauderdale

79. LOL. My Mom spelled my name WRONG on the birth certificate. We
didn't find out until I was 12 and we had to request a new birth certificate for something. Then she said it was unique and she was glad! She stuck in an extra "a".

We had a reason for calling her ditzy while growing up.

I have a lot of stories.

She once thought the key to her Mustang Convertible would work on my boyfriend's (now Husband) parent's Mustang Convertible. All the Mustangs have the same key, right? Haa Haaa Haa.

Hi, Mom (she is a lurker).

5. I'm named after Kim Novak and/or my Aunt Beverly.
My name is Kimberly. I know the part about Kim Novak is true, because I remember when my mother told me that. I'm not sure how the legend of Aunt Bev got started, or if it's just a figment of my imagination, developed over the last 30 years (since my mother's been dead). I don't remember my mother talking about it but I do remember my aunt saying something about it.

I like to tell people I was named after my aunt Beverly to see the bewildered look that comes over their faces. Then I let 'em off the hook.

32. So was I

My parents were originally going to name me Ingeborg, but felt it was too foreign sounding for 1960 America....instead I was named after Kim Novak and Yvette Mimieux.

I really would have preferred Ingeborg....so it goes.

Kim

8. I was just cause my parents thought the names sounded neat :)
and because it made cool initials (EZ are my initials). My brother (Michael Shaugnessy) was because my dad was a fan of the actor Mickey Shaugnessy. My brother has gone by Shaugn his whole life (Pronounced like Shawn or Sean). One of my sisters was named Michelle so her initials and my dads would be the same (weird reason, but there ya go). My other sister was named Andrea because my mom always loved the name :).

Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 05:36 PM by amandae
She died about 11 years before I was born. It was pretty strange, as a child, to go see her grave and on the headstone was my exact name.

Incidentally, my first child was born on the same month and day as the day my g-grandmother died.

On edit, when I say exact name, I mean first, middle and last.

30. It took a few days to name me.
After having had two girls already, they figured I'd probably be a boy, and they hadn't picked out a girl's name.

When I was born, they couldn't agree on a name right away. When I was three or four days old, the nurses were pressuring my mother to fill out the birth certificate papers, because I wouldn't be allowed to leave the hospital without a name and a birth certificate.

Finally, they chose Catherine, allegedly after the actress Catherine Deneuve. My middle name was chosen for my mother's favorite aunt.

40. I am named for my grandmothers
My mother's mother had died long before I was born, so it was a no brainer that the first daughter was to be named for her.

Ultimately after much discussion, my other grandmother's name became my middle name. It 's a good fit.

I followed tradition and named my daughter for HER grandmothers.

and my oldest niece's middle name happens to belong to both of HER grandmothers.

My other niece is named for her grandfather, however.

(I've since changed it.) Apparently that was the most popular female name in 1962, the year of my birth, but my parents named me for a TV reporter they liked. I believe there was a Lisa Howard on ABC at that time; maybe it was her.

Well, I just Googled her - I guess this is the source of my name:

51. Named after my dad, never thought to ask my grandmother why I
have two middle names until it was too late.

I have a friend whose father's legal name is Willy instaed of the intended William, due to an older sister providing the name because the father was not able to be there.

I had a teacher who was Clyde for essentialy the same reason, but his mother came up with that under the influence of whatever drugs they used on mothers at the time. Not necessarily on topic, but Mr B. was one of the best teachers I've known.

58. apparently it was the trend in the early 80's
(according to mom anyway) to give girls names that could be shortened to boy-sounding nicknames. She named me Nicole to call me Nicky. I always tell her she should've just flat-out named me Nicky, because when I was 3/4, I would always insist, "my name is NICOLE!" and never let anyone call me anything different. :)

I guess Mom's story about the trend was at least true in our area as I did go to preschool with a girl named Stevie.

66. I was supposed to be born in December, and that's what
my mother wanted to name me (yuck!). Thankfully I was born in January, so she shortened it to "Ember". I'm not crazy about my name, but it's better than "December".

70. I was a compromise
my father wanted Erin but my mother thought it sounded more like a boys name so my name is something that rhymes with Erin. And then my middle name, well I was raised Catholic so got to put one of those Saints somewhere in your name!

71. I was named after my uncle, whom I never met
In World War II, he was wounded in battle but he managed to carry his more seriously wounded buddy back to safety. Penicillin was scarce and he died when his wound became infected. His buddy made it back home and told my grandmother the whole story. I can't possibly live up to the name but I'm very proud of it.

75. YES!
I was my Grandfther's 24th grandchild (about the 10th grandson) and the first one named for him, JOHN.

The funny thing is, my grandfather and uncle were both John, but my uncle was nicknamed Jack. When my parents started to call me Jack, my mother and grandmother argued. She accused my mom of naming me for her brother, not her father.

Today I consider myself named for 2 great men and honor their memories. My granddad died in 1963, just a few weeks after President "Jack" Kennedy. My uncle Jack died in 1991.

As with many other of my deceased family members, I still love and miss them!

Spell the name right, people. Otherwise it's just a big pain in the arse for the kid their ENTIRE life.

77. Named after my Dad's brother who drowned when he was 12
He was swimming in a local river and got trapped in some weeds on the river bed. To this day I can't swim and panic if my head goes under water.

78. my story
in my culture, the first born son has the first name of the paternal grandfather, middle name is the maternal grand father, which then makes having your last name your fathers first name followed by -sen (and the name of the town in there too as a secondary last name) manageable.
Being the second son, this did not apply to me. My parents followed this convention for my brother, and my father was determined to call him TJ for short. He never did, because he was never home.
Second son (me) he was agian determined to have a TJ, so they found some names to fit that. I have never been called TJ by the way
