A person just said "Goodbye" to me! |
|
I was in the grocery and ran into a woman I hadn't seen in a couple of months and after our brief conversation, she touched me on the arm and said, "Goodbye."
The nerve of her shoving her religion down my throat! "Goodbye" is a contraction of the words, "God be with you."
Next to *that*, "Have a blessed day" seems rather tame.
(Forgive the overt sarcasm, but I couldn't help myself after reading the "Blessed day" thread. Some people, I think, actively seek being offended. It's not a hobby I'd like to procure. Take it as a general well-wishing and move on. All my own humble opinion, of course.)

1. A person attempted to evoke a wood nymph for me today! |
|
I told them about something, and they said, "knock wood", while rapping their knuckles on the table! Just like that, plain as can be!
I was delighted at the sentiment, but no faeries showed up that ever I saw...

2. You know, there is absolutely no need for you to use those parentheses |
|
As you're not interrupting a sentence to add a digression or clarify something.
You could have just done.

3. Someone wished me a "speedy" recovery when I was sick last week. |
|
Bastards. Everyone knows "speedy" is from "god speed," or "to deliver safely with help from god." I will never forgive them, I am crossing them off my list of friends.

The nerve of such people to accuse me of being tardy. I'm a very prompt individual.
Hmph!

8. I have NEVER heard that before. People say "goodbye" because it's the |

ending of a conversation. Methinks you're making a mountain outta a molehill.
Should I say ta-ta???

10. The post was sarcasm. The etymology of the word is found here.... |
|
http://www.bartleby.com/61/20/G0192000.htmlETYMOLOGY: Alteration (influenced by good day) of God be with you.
WORD HISTORY: No doubt more than one reader has wondered exactly how goodbye is derived from the phrase “God be with you.” To understand this, it is helpful to see earlier forms of the expression, such as God be wy you, god b'w'y, godbwye, god buy' ye, and good-b'wy. The first word of the expression is now good and not God, for good replaced God by analogy with such expressions as good day, perhaps after people no longer had a clear idea of the original sense of the expression. A letter of 1573 written by Gabriel Harvey contains the first recorded use of goodbye: “To requite your gallonde of godbwyes, I regive you a pottle of howdyes,” recalling another contraction that is still used.

11. So were YOU actively seeking to be offended to my post? |

Because no offense was intended. Read it again. I think a lot of people projected something into it.
