Listening to Jesus Christ Superstar- ask me somethin', for Christ's sake! |
|
Man, you remember when singers could sing? Even the little two-bit part people? Natural voices, beautiful music. This album is just really something.
Damned huge difference from Blink 182, that's for sure.

Ian kicks on that. I saw Deep Purple in the 80s and he sang bits of that stuff during the show.

19. LOL you know, it's funny, I actually have a Russian "version" |

of the original Broadway show. It's exactly the same show, but just packaged by the Russians. Got it on eBay.
It's brown with white English lettering. :)

35. okay, so it is not the movie for sure |
|
that one has a pick from the movie of them crucifying Christ.
The only thing left out of your version is "Could we Start Again Please". The movie itself also has the greatest staging of "Jesus Christ Superstar" with the chorus all wearing white fringed bell bottoms and big white afros. It is worth renting the video just to watch that.
But the broadway version is killer. The instrumental arrangments are much more raw and driving.

26. thought that this brought a little bit of 'greek tragedy' |
|
in the portrayal... Judas, realizing that he had played a role that needed to be played - realizing that while he thought he was acting in the best interest of others (too much attention to Jesus - so the motivating theory was suggested - might lead to the mass crack down on the Jews by the Romans... so the action - according to this view - was taken weighing the 'interests' of the people vs the interest/life of the center of the 'movement', Jesus)... that he was really acting according to a particular script in which his actions were needed for the final events to unfold (the crucifixion) as were intended... and in that final transaction - before the realization that his action was scripted (and necessary) that he was trying to be "noble" - ie not acting in greed but from a belief that his actions were necessary - but not yet recognizing why that action was necessary (i.e., thinking acting in interest of protecting his people from a possible and severe crack down from the Romans, but really acting to set about a chain of events to set about the death and rising of Christ.) One of the reasons for my adult (didn't "get it" in this way when I was younger) for the presentation of the musical - as it seemed to capture the human dilemnas and conflicts in a rather complex ways. Was it evil intent of actors - or was it that the actors were acting in a required but unkown script....

Candy Punk vs show tunes? By the way, is it the Ian Gillan recording? When I was young I got to see Purple play in the basement of one of the guys from Elf's house when they were in the states. The other version...ehh. Oh, and Blink 182, and Green Day, and Sum 41, and most of the other Candy Punks are out there protesting with their music and concerts, and most contributed to the Rock against Bush project. Please don't say you are "Too old to Rock and Roll, and too young to die!" The kids are alright!

But you are right on the vocal side. I remember Head East with their four and five part live harmonies. I think Dio had, and still has that kind of ballsy projection Gillan and some others had. A different time, but music would suck if it never moved beyond, and back around that era.

I think I just feel kind of ripped off by my generation. Us Gen X'ers always gotta look up to the Boomers.
You know, there was someone in our generation, though, who made it pretty big (before he died) as the lead singer of Sublime named Brad Nowell (not that you necessarily haven't heard of him). He had really amazing vocals, and he used rhythm, too, not just melody...

42. I knew Carl Anderson, who played Judas |
|
He used to sing with my church choir occasionally as a soloist.
Best singer I've ever heard live, up close. He had a powerhouse beautiful voice. I am amazed he was not a major music star. He unfortunately died of leukemia this year. Carl had married Veronica Porche Ali years ago, ex-wife of Muhummad Ali, who I also knew slightly.
Anyways, I will never forget his singing.

I didn't know that he died, either- that is horrible.
IMO, he truly makes the album. He's better than Ian Gillan, even. VERY passionate voice.
"Heaven on Their Minds"....
On edit: Did he play him in the movie? This version says it's Murray Head...
Edit 2: Yeah, just looked it up- he was in the movie. 1973. He was great, too.
That's really something.
