I love it, but my husband doesn't like tater tots, so I don't make it. Same with tuna hotdish - he hates tuna.
He's always hungry for hamburger hotdish, though (hamburger, onions, chopped tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, chili powder, elbow macaroni).

26. We are people of the "Minnesotan" persuasion. |
|
"Hotdish" is Minnesota-speak for what other people might call a "casserole."
I have been teased mercilessly by most non-Minnesotans I know at one time or another. "Hotdish?" they say. "That makes no sense!" It makes perfect sense. It's a dish and it's hot. Hotdish.
I grew up on hotdish. I know all about Lutheran church basement lunches, ham buns, egg coffee, and jell-o salad.

36. Oh, hey. I'm a supper person. Supper is the evening meal. |
|
Back when my dad was growing up on the farm, they had breakfast, forenoon's lunch, dinner, afternoon's lunch, then supper.
Any meal that wasn't breakfast, dinner, or supper was referred to as "lunch." My great aunts always served us "lunch" whenever we visited, no matter the time of day.
At our house, the evening meal is still supper. "Dinner" is a big meal in the middle of the day, like Sunday dinner or Christmas dinner.

38. WOW, and that's in Minnesota? |
|
I guess it's more a rural thing than a southern thing, then.
Lunch was always an informal kind of meal, like soemthing you took with you someplace, or whipped up in a hurry. We weren't rich enough to eat five meals a day. Breakfast, dinner and supper, with some days lunch instead of dinner, was how we did it.

And definitely rural roots. I wasn't raised in a rural area, but both of my parents were. (Dad was a farm boy and Mom was a "town" girl).
