Who wants to be my friend? (It's free)
I don't really have any DU friends. Maybe people don't think I am very interesting, but I like to think I am.

Do you want to be my friend?

1. Sure, if you'll go over to my house in Inver Grove Heights
and tell the people who live there now that I want it back.

(Sorry - I moved away four years ago and am feeling acutely homesick right now. And I would love to have that house back, even though it's worth now about twice what I paid for it.)

16. Minnesota is always home to me.
I was born and raised there. I moved here to Idaho at the age of 34. (I did live in Wisconsin for three years in my mid-20s, but I went home at least once a month then).

I will never consider myself anything but a Minnesotan. My daughter graduates high school this spring, and then my husband and I will begin actively working toward getting back home before our youngest starts school.

13. Sure.
Sure, as long as you don't mind the relatively low post count and the fact that I'm profoundly weird* (but not in a bad way --I'm mostly harmless).

What does this friendship you speak of entail?

* And no, I don't look particularly weird (it is a deep weirdness rather than the superficial kind which manifests itself these days in multiple unusual piercings and do-it-yourself trepanations).

27. I can handle that!
As for the post count I wouldn't worry...I'd be much more skeptical if you were a newbie who had 3K posts in your first few weeks. Quality over quantity!

The friendship itself doesn't really entail too much. You just have to say hi to me and occasionally respond to my posts to make me feel better. If you don't talk to me in awhile, then you might want to PM me and make sure I am still alive. I'm pretty low maintenance.

And I don't care if you do look weird or not. Well, not really. But I *do* enjoy weirdness. I'm not sure if you would consider me weird or just with a very odd, corny sense of humor.

I went to Spain in high school... it's kind of the opposite.

You are from Spain and went to high school in Minnesota. I am from Minnesota and went to Spain when I was in high school.

Wow...that sounds weird.

But I did take four years of Spanish in H.S. That was a few *cough* years ago, though. I am thinking of taking a class to brush up!

And I LOVE Spain!

55. Where?
Where did you go to in Spain?

I grew up in Zaragoza (actually it was Barcelona for the first couple of years or so but it's not like I remember any of it --interestingly, my mother claims I could understand Catalán* at the time). My folks are now living in the province of Cádiz (specifically, in Puerto de Santa María which is close to Rota which has a big naval installation with a U.S. presence).

My mom actually met my dad when she went to study in Spain (but that was university for her, not high school).

* I don't really believe her. You know how mothers are.

Spent time in Madrid, Salamanca, Barcelona and several other places. It was a great trip!

So how long did you live in Spain? And where do you live now?

So this was a classroom trip then? Sounds nice.

I lived in Spain for 14 years or so. I live north of Pennock which is the next town west of Willmar on Highway 12. Willmar is west of the Twin Cities on Highway 12 like,... what is it?... 90 miles or so?

Yes, it was a classroom trip, my senior year of H.S. It seems like so long ago!

So were you born in the US? Or Spain... Do you have dual citizenship? I find that so interesting...

I think Pennock must be about 90 miles or so. I haven't ever been there, though so I could be wrong! I'm more of a Northern Minnesota woman. I was born in Hibbing, went to college in Bemidji and then moved to Minneapolis.

Was it so long ago? I mean, in my case my senior year seems like a long time ago because it was (relatively speaking --it was 1986).

Shananigans wrote:

I was born in the U.S. (Redwood Falls, MN, to be precise --but it was really during a visit to the U.S. by my parents so I can't say that I actually lived here when I was that young). I did use to hold dual citizenship (I've had the two passports simultaneously). I'm not certain what my status is right now (other than the fact that I do have U.S. citizenship --it's complicated).

77. Flex-spending is when they allow you to have money taken out
of your paycheck, tax free and then you can get reimburesed the amount you put in for your medical/vision/dental expenses. I spent $250 on glasses and contacts 2 weeks ago so I got a check reimbursing me for that! Yay!

As for my work, I am a "Donor Services Associate" for a large non-profit in Minneapolis. I basically offer "customized solutions" to our customer/donor's needs. It's a great job and I love it!

What do you do?

96. Oh yeah!
Our company offers that but we didn't enroll this year. Do you think it ends up being worth it? Do you lose the money if you don't spend it? That's how ours works.

Your job sounds interesting... what exactly does 'donor services' mean?

I do clinical data management. So if a company runs a big drug trial, we are in charge of basically cross-checking all the data for consistancy and such. It's many-fold more complicated, but that's the gist of it. It's not my ideal job, but it pays ok and has benefits, so it's what I'm doing, for now.

100. Well...
I think it is worth it. I mean for our company, we sign up for an amount at the beginning of the year and then they divide it up and take a portion of it out of each of your paychecks, tax free.

I think it is totally worth it. Our deductable on health insurance is $300 bucks so I put that in, plus a little more. That way I can get that all back and I really don't even notice it out of my checks. Also, we can use it for things like contact solution, cough syrup, ibuprofin, etc. It's worth it if you think about the tax money you are saving (I figure roughly 33%)

As for my job, Donor Services is a specialized department within the non-profit that I work for's fundraising department. Basically, I offer customized solutions to our donors. When a company wants to plan an event I help them with it, when they are handing in their money to us, I help them get it in correctly. I also work with major donors to make sure that thier needs are being met. I am basically the internal side to fundraising. It's a fun job!

Data management...that's interesting. I don't think I could ever do that as a full time job. Part of my responsibilities include data integrity for our three databases, but I can barely handle that part of it! But I do enjoy it as a break from the rest of my work. If this is just what you are doing "for now" what do you hope to do in the future?

87. Okay...
I live in central NY, I'm a physics teacher at a catholic school, I'm married with a stepdaughter, and I've been suffering from major insomnia since November 2000. I thought I had a very good chance of curing it on November 2nd of this year, but no such luck. Guess we'll try again in 2006 and 2008.

What about you? :-)

92. Well...
I live in Minneapolis, MN and work in the "fundraising" department of a large non-profit organization. I'm 25, single and am thinking of joining a gym after work tomorrow. I have never had insomnia, but lately I have been waking up at 5:00 in the morning every single night to go to the bathroom. (I'm sure you wanted to know that, but that's what friends are for!)

I hope your insomnia gets better! That just sucks!

86. I get daily e-mails from "truthout" and time and again DU was
mentioned and as well a few posters from other sites had mentioned the DU and that I should check it out. So I have been lurking here for months but only joined approx. a week ago. I was utterly disillusioned following the election and this site was very cathartic for me just by reading different peoples opinions on things. Sooooo, last week I finally stepped out of the box and decided to join and I'm glad I did!!! TY for the warm welcome and for this thread :-) :toast:

72. Sure, but I live in St. Paul and we NEVER cross the bridge to Mpls
because it's just too scary over there. Maybe we could wave at each other across the Ford Bridge?

83. Sounds like a plan to me!
It's tough to cross over that big bridge, I hear ya! I stay away from that side of the river if at all possible ;)

Actually when I first moved here I even worked on that side of the river! (Don't let the other Minneapolis-ites know!)

Hi friend!

84. For you, my friend, I would...
cross seven oceans, shave your back hair if you couldn't reach, clip your toenails when you have backpains, make you chicken soup when you get sick and read you bedtime stories to help you fall asleep!

Financing might be a bit of a problem, though, due to distance constraints. We might have to be creative here!

97. Wow, I see you've been here as long as I have
and have just over 1000 posts. I too have been here since 2001, and finally hit four digits this week. I figured myself to have about the lowest post total for anyone who's been around that long, but it's nice to see someone who is close :)

104. Haha...no sir-ee! I am just as low!
I just get on here so sporadically sometimes!
But congrats on being a fellow low post-er! I figure quality over quantity. So many newbies are concerned about "racking up" thier post counts so they can get recognition, etc. I figure that if your posts are actually a little meaningful people will remember you more than if you post 1,000 three word posts... Just my take on things!
